Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in New Delhi is one of the biggest Sikh temples in the world. Its kitchen resembles a food factory due to which between 40,000-50,000 people get free meals every day.
The mass meal or langar is open round the clock for people from all communities. Majority of the kitchen staff is made up of volunteers known as sewadars.

Well it is easy for foreigners to understand and remember. Most important thing is how a Sikh practices what he learns from his religion.

I'd love to spend a month peeling vegitables from about sundown to sunrise at this temple. If I could only be as lucky to be able to afford to go to or live near a community of people so dedicated towards each other and others!

You can start doing it in a local Sikh Temple in area where you live. Community is dedicated for sure. Getting better. A recent flood in Punjab has made the community do a lot to help people who lost every thing. Donations from Sikhs living in foreign countries are expected to be more than 1 million pounds. Communities are not perfect just like every one else.

Jay Flora I'm mentally an agnostic so it's great that I was born as a Sikh. Else I would've questioned my religion too much. Now I just don't have too many questions. Satnam Waheguru!

The concept of langar which was designed to be upheld among all people, regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender, or social status-was an innovative charity and symbol of equality introduced by the Hindu religion king Chandragupta Maurya in early 4th century (also called Bhandara in Hinduism) later on the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak around 1500 CE got influenced by this and start doing this practice in North Indian state of Punjab. The roots of such community kitchen institutions and volunteer-run charitable feeding is very old in Sikh traditions; the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Ching (7th century CE) wrote about monasteries with such volunteer-run kitchens. A related concept emerged from the practices of, Faruddin Ganjshara Sufi saint living in the Punjab region during the 13th century, who would redistribute sweets his visitors would bring to his khalifas and common devotees. This concept developed, over time, into langar-khana near his shrine, a practice documented in Jawahir al-Faridi compiled in 1623 CE. "Satnam Shree Waheguruji"

Langar was started over 500 years ago by Guru Nanak in rejection of the caste system and to promote the equality of all. Here, all people regardless of social status, religion, caste or gender sit as equals and share the same food as one humanity. The Langar is an integral part of all Sikh Gurdwara''s in all corners of the World. Despite Sikhism being one of the smallest World Religions literally millions of people are served free food through Langar every single day.
