13:51 That's the great thing about the Indonesian nation, all tribes/ethnicities/races in our country, when in public places including malls, always speak Indonesian as a unifying language, and none of the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia use their ancestral language in their daily interactions. This is very different from Malaysian and Singaporeans who in public places all speak their ethnic language. Btw, enjoy the journey. 🇮🇩👍🔥🌹❤️

I like it when you're curious about Indonesia history. Indonesian language is not just a tool of communication but also as a unifying tool. In 1928, there's a youth congress called "Youth Pledge" that held by varied backgrounds of representatives. They came up with the ideas that they will use Indonesian language as a 'lingua franca' that unifies all ethnicities, races, and tribes in Indonesia to live in harmony. It's in line with our motto "unity in diversity". Hope you enjoy your trip here😁

A bit discussion here. Abt "living their true identity" well.. Chinese Indonesian are more comfortable with "Indonesian identity" rather than they be fully Chinese. Idk how to describe this but, Singaporean or Malaysian Malay for example, they don't have this "Malaysian identity" built in them unlike Chindos.. Chindos here don't assimilate with the locals but they are the locals.

All trains in Indonesia use air conditioning, even the lowest class (economy). Panoramic trains usually pass through the South Java Line, because the hilly contours there provide beautiful and breathtaking views. The recommended route is Bandung, Garut and towards Jogja. For the prohibition of Chinese language and culture, in the past the Chinese were told to choose citizenship to join Indonesia or return to China, and the majority chose to settle in Indonesia. And the Chinese who settled in Indonesia are more proficient in local languages and Bahasa Indonesia, even until now. For us, Bahasa Indonesia is the unifying language and lingua franca, not only for the Chinese, but for the various ethnicities living in Indonesia. You may notice that Indonesia consists of hundreds of ethnicities, and each ethnicity has its own language, imagine if there was no Bahasa Indonesia, how many dozens of languages we would have to master just so we could communicate with our brothers and sisters, although maybe some of us are polyglots especially if our parents come from different ethnicities.

and the fact is that our brothers and sisters of Chinese descent do not want to be considered or even called Chinese. they want to still be considered Indonesian because their grandfather, grandmother, mother and father were born and raised in Indonesia... Traditional Chinese language according to our brothers, they say that Chinese is only used at home and in their community. and the generation that uses it a lot are those who are older. and there is also a unique thing where some of them are very fluent in the local language too... basically the culture and various languages in Indonesia are very unique...

Hey Sabri, thanks for sharing! Very interesting indeed. This is the same for Chinese Singaporeans too. Even though we are Chinese by descent, we still identify as Singaporeans. It can be a struggle to reconcile our race with our nationality, but for me, it’s about embracing both, because they make us who we are :) - Darien

7:12 The reason why the excecutive class carriage is quiet is because most of the Executive Class passengers switched by using Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Train (Whoosh) because of the pricing is very near with Whoosh in economic class. It used to be very packed especially on weekend, Mondays (especially on early morning), Friday (evening until night departure) before the Whoosh era Because of that, the passengers has another options. If you want to enjoy scenery or relaxed trip (not rush) or bringing person that you don't want to change for the another train (Because, you need to change with feeder trains in Padalarang if you want go to Bandung station), you can take the classic train (Argo Parahyangan, Papandayan, Pangandaran) that you rode on that video (Or maybe Cikuray and Serayu if you were tight on budget) If you were on rush, or only doing flash trip (only depart in morning and back on evening). Whoosh is your best friend

It is true that during the New Order (1967-2000) all forms of Chinese culture were banned (because they were associated with the People's Republic of China, which in the viewpoint of the military regime at that time was equated with communism), but also the Chinese community in Indonesia chose assimilation rather than segregation, so it is different from Malaysia. For a long time in some parts of Indonesia, Chinese communities have maintained their dialect languages (Hakka, Hokkien, Tiochiu). But in social life in the wider community, Indonesians, regardless of ethnicity, including Chinese, use Bahasa Indonesia as the language of daily communication.
@darienandjoanna

@@darienandjoannaIf you go to Medan (North Sumatra Province), Bagansiapiapi (Riau Province), Bangka Belitung Province, West Kalimantan Province (especially if you go to Singkawang), you will see the Chinese community still maintaining the traditions of their ancestors. Chinese culture is very thick and still practiced, including the dialect. On the other hand, if you travel around Java, the Chinese community on the island of Java is more adapted to the local culture. Don't be surprised if they no longer speak Haka, Hokkien, but speak fluently in Betawi, Sundanese, Javanese (even high Javanese, krama inggil). In the history of the Chinese political movement in Indonesia, there used to be two opposing forces, one side agreed with assimilation, the other side chose segregation. Politically, the group that chose assimilation was stronger and dominated. You can feel and see the impact until now, in daily conversations the Chinese people prefer Indonesian or regional languages rather than using their own dialects.

About help offers, it depends tho. In this case, they offer service so it's not free, and idk how much you paid them, so they probably chase after you because you paid below the standard?? Nice review. Here are some comments on the situation with Chinese culture in Indonesia during the New Order: 1. The relationship between Chinese culture and the New Order government in Indonesia was more complex than often portrayed. First, while there were restrictions, the government never implemented an outright ban on Chinese cultural practices. Indonesian-Chinese families could still celebrate Lunar New Year and observe Chinese religious practices and culture privately. Those who grew up during the peak of the New Order until it downfall often continued these traditions within their homes without interference from state apparatus. 2. While it's true that many young Indonesian-Chinese, including myself, cannot speak Chinese dialects, this is more pronounced among those in major urban areas like Jakarta. In contrast, in rural areas or provinces with significant Chinese populations, the younger generation often speaks Chinese, with the specific dialect influenced by the dominant Chinese ethnic group in that region. 3. The New Order's policies toward Chinese culture were largely shaped by events in the 1960s, specifically the attempted coup by the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). The PKI had sought support from Mao Zedong's China, and some mainland Chinese residents in Indonesia, along with certain Chinese descendants still loyal to the PRC, had acted as double agents supporting the PKI. This created a complex situation where the government struggled to distinguish political loyalties. After the PKI's defeat, the Suharto regime responded by deporting mainland Chinese back to China and requiring Indonesian-Chinese to explicitly choose their citizenship and loyalty. Those who choose PRC will get deported. The government then severed diplomatic ties with the PRC and implemented policies aimed at encouraging Chinese Indonesians to adopt Indonesian cultural practices. This was part of broader measures to sever ties with the PRC and integrate Chinese-Indonesians into Indonesian society by promoting Indonesian cultural identity over Chinese.
