The end of the first year is looming, and the trainees face their assessments. Those who do not show real progress will be asked to leave the course. As well as preparing for tests, the interns must get as much experience as possible. Nicola makes a good start by getting into some important operations, while Yvonne is pleased to finally get a placement which gives her a chance to perform her first leg amputation.

What a horribly, horribly flawed "training" system. The only justification seems to be "that's the way it's always been done". It's an insult to anyone involved in "professional "training systems. In a proper system, trainee surgeons would be rostered to assist in surgery for a set number of hours each week. Instead we have surgeons here who get only 30% of the surgical exposure of their peers, entirely at the expense of their hospital-imposed ward workload, the whims of registrars/consultants, and how much they are willing to neglect their ward patients. Imagine if train drivers were trained that way - only when they could find someone else to take over their other work, whether they could get to the station before the train departed, and at the whim of the train driver actually letting them practice. Luckily, with human lives at stake, we don't allow that. It shouldn't be allowed in surgery either.

I know right? its fucking bizzare. They’re judging them on how many operations they got lucky enough to do... seems like total BS

Nick is terrible with breaking bad news. Frankly, doctors need to be taught what to say rather than relying upon pat phrases that are not helpful and potentially hurtful. Along with nutrition and metabolism, communication is one of the great holes in medical education.

those who are watching, the guys are doing the MRCS Part B exam. which is the membership of royal college of surgeons exam. It's a very difficult test and before that test they had to do Part A. about 30% of doctors pass this test. it's really not easy! I recently cleared it and now watching this documentary I just view it with a bit more empathy now. It's not easy to be a surgeon. overworked underpaid expensive mandatory exams and courses.. struggling financially .. spending time away from family rotating ..

Oh Nick. Communication techniques not your forte. Try imagining that you are telling a family member. Stay in control but be gentle and imagine how you would feel if you swapped places and someone said to you "your dying, sorry that's how it goes. " 🙄

This is the UK. It's relatively cheap. And you get paid about 30kPounds a year in FY1 and FY2 in UK.
@pedalwerk
@pedalwerk 3 жыл бұрын
In the UK, all people who live in the UK can get a government loan for their 5-6 years of tuition and extra money to live on while they study. These student loans have very reasonable repayment schedules and are basically impossible to default on. By the time people reach surgical residency (as shown in this program), they are already junior doctors, so are earning a salary of minimum £24,000 per year, and up to £30,000 per year - as you only start paying back your student loan when you earn over £25,000 per year, this is fairly manageable.
