Great video. I bought a couple of Beta AR jackets from amazon earlier this year and apparently I received the older 2017 model. Your video helped me determine the differences. I don't mind the 2017 model, though I'm sure the 2018 model is excellent as well. Big fan of arcteryx at this point. Expensive as hell, but it's quality gear. I live in currently soggy Tennessee so I get to wear my jacket almost every day. I've also taken it on planes to various cities and into the Smokies. It's quite good. I'm planning to take a ski trip sometime next year and I think I'll try out the beta ar on the slopes. It doesn't have a powder skirt, but hopefully it will be fine.

I´m indecisive on whether or not to buy the Beta AR or the Beta SL Hybrid. I have seen multiple people noting that the SL is not waterproof (guessing since it´s not GT Pro). Do anyone know exactly how much rain the SL can handle (anno 2019; with the SL having had a "revised" version)? I don´t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a hardshell that doesn´t resist a bit of wet weather. Thanks in advance
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
Both are fully waterproof, that's for sure; if it leaks within a reasonable amount of time then it's a warranty issue. Unfortunately the reason for most users experiencing wetness inside the jacket is actually condensation as they're wearing too many layers rather than the jacket leaking. The AR is simply more durable and uses Gore-Tex Pro rather than Gore-Tex Paclite/Paclite Plus. The SL will pack down far smaller, but the AR will resist general abuse better.

Hi there, I know it is quite a dumb question but can Beta AR be a sole jacket in Winter without any additional layering beside the one you are wearing next to your skin? of course, that also depends on the weather. so if I want this to be my single-layer jacket, how cold outside can be to wear this?
@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
The Beta offers no warmth apart from keeping the wind off, so it most likely won't be warm enough. This does depend on how cold your winters are, which activity you're doing, even small things such as how much you've had to eat. The Beta isn't really designed to be worn all the time either, only when it's raining heavily. We'd recommend giving our 'how to layer outdoor clothing effectively' video; this will give you an idea as to which layers you need to stay comfortable and dry. Kind regards, Harry.

Have always been an Arc'Teryx fan (and now, BlackYak, too). One issue I have with more or less every other manufacturer's range - is the cuff cinches using the same fabric as the jacket itself and primitive, hideous, sticky (where it shouldn't stick) 1950-ies type velcro. Yikes! The entire Arc'Teryx range of hardshell jackets sports quality cuffs with low-profile, modern velcro. This puts these jackets a head and shoulder above the competition. It is, of course, more expensive than I'd like, but even in its price range it has very little completion.
@trekitt3 жыл бұрын
It's a small detail, but those cuffs make a massive difference. Thanks for watching.
@LeoInterHyenaem3 жыл бұрын
@@trekitt Thank you. You're welcome. The cuff design and Velcro quality define my purchasing decisions and I would like to hope, others', too. The North Face and many others employed quality cuffs and modern minimalist Velcro molded in some mid- and higher-tier models (my somewhat affordable €175 The North Face Summit purchased in 2014 and the €350 Häglofs I had before that also sported quality cuffs with integrated modern Velcro), but now these manufacturers appear to have reverted back to use of cheap hideous stitch-on primitive Velcro in most models, including the expensive ones. Now Arc'teryx appears to be the only company (possibly, along with Black Yak - my other other favourite active lifestyle apparel manufacturer, but they, unfortunately, don't make large sizes) who isn't clearly keen on compromising quality and elegance of their jackets to save a couple of dollars.

@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky one Gary. I'm pretty similar in size (6'3", 42 chest and 34 waist, no belly) and can fit in the medium, but I'd struggle to get any decent winter layers underneath. The performance difference between the sizes will be marginal, so it's all down to your personal preference; slightly looser or slighter tighter! Paul.
@ichessekinder6 жыл бұрын
6 ft 3" wearing M is crazy. How would the L fit for you?
@trekitt6 жыл бұрын
The Beta AR has a long cut, so even taller users such as Will can get away with a medium. The large would be slightly longer and more voluminous, meaning you'd be able to fit bulkier layers underneath comfortably if you were in colder environments.
@TravelingDan205 жыл бұрын
Which one would you pick the Beta AR or SV?
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
It depends how much protection you need. SV is essentially a more severe version of the AR, so for the average user the AR is more than enough, but for the mountain guide or frequent mountaineer, the extra protection of the SV will most likely come in handy.
@leirda35 жыл бұрын
Wonderful review. I especially liked that you included your measurements and put on the Atom LT Jacket to show the fit with some layering underneath. My question is regarding layering with the Atom LT *Hoody: Assuming you've tried this combo, how does the Atom LT Hoody fit underneath the Beta AR? I'm concerned with the Atom LT's hood possibly getting pushed up by the Beta AR's high collar. The model on the Arcteryx website wears the Atom LT Hoody underneath with both jackets' hoods down and with the Beta AR not fully zipped up, allowing the collar to open up a bit... probably because it's not comfortable with both hoods down and the Beta AR fully zipped up! Thoughts?
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
It's all personal preference unfortunately. The benefit to layering the Atom LT Hoody underneath is that when stationary the hood will provide warmth and protection; the downside is that it is rather uncomfortable stuffed down the back of the Beta. Some of don't mind, others do, but the chances are you'll just get used to it.

I am 5’6” 160 to 165lbs. I wear a medium Atom LT and Atom AR jackets. I tried on a small Beta AR and it worked great with a long sleeve base layer and the Atom LT, however my Atom AR did not layer well underneath, the fit was too tight and the Atom AR poked out the bottom of the Beta AR. If you’re in a cool climate with rain, minimal snow and primarily wear a light or mid weight puffy of fleece, go with the small. If you live in a cold climate with lots of snow and ice, I would size up to the medium.
@kylechoy14555 жыл бұрын
woolengrappler so dude, you wear both atom lt and ar in the same size? I am struggling would small size beta ar have too long sleeve
@woolengrappler5 жыл бұрын
Kyle Choy yes, I wear the same in both, however I live in Minnesota where temps regularly drop below zero Fahrenheit -10 to -20 not uncommon several times each winter so I wanted some extra room to layer either my atom LT or my heavier atom ar underneath. If you are not layering heavily a small should be fine. Arcteryx typically accounts for layers in their sizes so a base layer will fit next to skin, mid layer factors in a base layer so you do t need to size up, etc. hopefully that makes sense.

Excellent review except I didnt hear anything about the interior. What does it feel like inside? I am torn between this and the Zeta AR mainly because of the Gore C Knit difference in the Zeta AR. Could you elaborate on the feel of the interior of this as opposed to the Beta AR and just how it feels against the skin? Which is more water resistant. I will be hiking the AT next year which is VERY rainy. I am a girl and I dont sweat much. Thank you.
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
Good points! The Zeta feels more like a softshell from the inside and is far nicer next to skin, however you do sacrifice durability due to the knitted fabric. The Beta is more suitable for mountainous conditions and is more comfortable when worn over a long sleeved baselayer or midlayer of some sort, whereas the Zeta is better for walking/trekking and can be comfortably worn next to skin or over additional layers. In regard to water resistance, both are guaranteed fully waterproof, however the Beta uses Gore-Tex Pro, so it will have a longer lifespan. If I were you, I'd go for the Zeta as it'll provide more than enough weather protection/durability and is more comfortable next to skin. The Beta AR will most likely be overkill. Hope that helps! Harry.

Beta, Zeta and Alpha are all aimed at their own specific uses. Beta is typically your 'all-round' mountain option, so suitable for climbing, scrambling, walking, trekking, etc. Zeta is aimed at trekking and mountain walking, and Alpha is aimed at technical climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. The letters after denote the durability/thickness of the garment; I.e. LT = lightweight, AR = all round, SV = severe. How does the beta ar compare the the beta lt. Im Looking for a everyday waterproof jacket for biking, walling and at football stadiums . I also do a bit of hiking, but never in mauntains.
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
You'll definitely be better suited with the Beta LT based on what you're using it for. The Beta AR is simply a tougher and consequently less breathable option which is best suited to mountainous use. If you never plan to use it in the mountains, go for the LT.

What's with their sizing?! I'm usually an XL but here we're talking about an M for my size?!? wtf
@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
The Beta is oversized to allow you to fit multiple layers underneath in cold conditions. For example, I'm a large/x-large in t-shirts but would wear a medium in the Beta. Harry.

I'm 6' 180-185 Lbs usually wear medium in most clothing my atom LT is Large does anyone know if a medium would fit well?
@trekitt5 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, We are roughly the same build by the sound of it but I am 6ft 3. In the video, I was wearing a medium and it does fit very well. The previous model was a little too short in the body for me so I was very happy when they made it slightly longer, and as you are 3 inches shorter you'll definitely benefit more from the extra protection.

Good video, although that jacket looks too big on you.
@trekitt4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, thanks for watching. Will felt that the Beta AR was a good fit to allow for extra winter layers. We sometimes find, especially with Arcteryx, that we are between sizes, a medium is just a bit too tight and a large is a bit too baggy. Better to be a bot too big than a a bit too tight. But, as with all these things, it's a personal choice. Paul.
