Just picked up a Thorium AR and it's absolutely phenomenal for the price. You can feel the durability and toughness of the face fabric, and it's substantial and warm. I'm 6'2 and 235lbs and the XL fits like a glove. Worth the money.

Hi great video, I`m learning a lot from watching these, I have a question for you about Arc`teryx in general if you can advise please. I walk a lot on beaches so my clothing is exposed to the salty air . A well known make I used to own wasn't proof against this and within a season a lot of the fittings on my boots and jacket showed signs of degradation and corrosion. I am currently using Helly Hansen stuff and that seems ok so far. I chose them specifically as they have a marine heritage. How would these clothes stand up to that?
@trekitt
@trekitt 5 жыл бұрын
Generally saltwater will ruin most boots quite quickly, so we wouldn't recommend using anything you care about too much if you plan on getting the boots wet. Clothing wise, it should all perform to the usual high standards as long as it's washed regularly (once a month or so). One last thing to mention is to always wash your outdoor kit with products such as Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash rather than your standard household detergent.

We did stock the Fenrir a few years ago, but it's changed quite a lot since then so we haven't had the chance to use the latest model. The Thorium does feature more down but at a lower quality, so it's more suitable for low-intensity activities whereas the Fenrir is aimed more at climbing, mountaineering and skiing.

What Arcteryx hard shell do you layer over it? Did you recommend sizing up on the shell or use the same size (large on both or large on the Thorium and XL on the shell?)
@trekitt
@trekitt 4 жыл бұрын
It depends when you're doing in the jacket. We stock a wide range of Arc'teryx shells, from the lightweight Alpha FL all the way up to the super tough Beta SV. Whether you need to layer up or not will depend on which shell you opt for, as some feature larger cuts than others for additional layers. For example, you'll most likely stick to your usual size in the Beta SV, whereas you may have to size up for the Beta SL. I'd recommend having a browse of the shell jackets we stock and narrowing it down based on activity. Kind regards, Harry. Hey Paul, Which jacket do you prefer between the Arcteryx Thorium AR, Fjällräven Keb Touring? Second question, what are your thoughts between the Cerium LT vs the Atom LT? Are there any other puffies that you like in that range for hiking? Rab, Montane, etc...??? I have a lot of them, just wanted your thoughts again... Thanks!
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
Both fantastic jackets, although the Thorium does feel more robust when on. That being said, I prefer the fit of the Keb Touring. The Cerium is the more packable, lightweight midlayer but not particularly suitable as an outer layer here in the UK unless the weather is completely dry, whereas the Atom can be used virtually all of the time but isn't as packable or lightweight. Jackets have become so good these days that there's very little separating them besides fit and personal preference! My current favourite insulated jacket is the Haglofs V Series Mimic, which I'd highly recommend. Regards, Harry.

Hi Paul! I really love your videos. How would you say this stacks up against the Microlight and the Ghost Whisperer? Is it more heavyweight?
@trekitt
@trekitt 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately we can't comment on the Ghost Whisperer as it isn't an item we stock, however the Thorium is a much bigger and warmer jacket than the Microlight Alpine. The down is the same quality, but there's far more of it. The outer fabric on the Thorium is also more durable, but the Microlight will pack down smaller. It depends how much warmth you need, whether you'll be using the jacket primarily as an outer or a midlayer and which activities you'll be carrying out.
@thomasellingsen1755

Thanks a lot for your answer. I have Cerium LT already, a few years old. I think it's warm enough but still what I would no longer consider rugged enough for my relatively calm outdoor mountain activities, trekking and skiing, sometimes in dense woods. I've already ripped the nylon once, and it seems every time I pack it down it takes hours to decompress afterwards. I think it may be dying, so I'm using it more as a fashion piece now. Instead I've got a Rab Xenon X packed down on my trips now, but I miss the feeling of down. Could the Thorium be my next jacket

@@thomasellingsen1755 If you're happy adding a little warmth, you'll get along really well with the Thorium. The cheapest alternative option we stock is the M.E Lightline which we sell for £174.99. It does depend on how warm you are as a person, but I'd find it far too warm for active use here in the UK. I'd look at wearing more thin layers rather than one large one, as this allows you to effectively dump heat when you're on the move and add warmth when stationary. The Thorium is more durable, warmer and has a more relaxed fit, whereas the Cerium LT is lighter, more packable, not quite as warm and has a trimmer fit. It's a shame the Fjallraven Keb down jacket doesn't have the synthetic areas under the arms and cuffs.

Unless you're an extremely sweaty user or wearing too many layers, you probably won't notice a difference. I have a Montane Anti-Freeze (down all over, no synthetic) and I've never felt soggy/clammy as a result of the down becoming saturated. Harry

@@trekitt Thanks Harry. Just one more thing .... Is the Keb down jacket too much for winter walks out in the UK? Nothing too strenuous at all really. I have the Keb Eco-shell so was thinking of getting the Keb down but I fear it might be too warm

@@PhilHaddon I can only speak from personal experience as everyone is different, but it'd be too warm for me to use for walking/active use. I'd use it as something to pop on when stationary or for everyday use.

Hi! I'm interested in buying this jacket and use it as an everyday jacket for the urban winter. I live in The Netherlands (climate similar "wet" to the UK), and my question is if this jacket is waterproof enough for these type of winters and everyday use? Not planning to constantly walking through rain, but when it does rain: I don't want to be soaked. Cheers!

The Thorium is slightly water resistant, but by no means waterproof, so we would never aim to wear it in the rain. The best two options are to either carry a shell with you when rain is expected, or look at a synthetically insulated alternative which will offer warmth even when wet. A good option is the Arc'teryx Atom AR which we stock in 4 colours. www.trekitt.co.uk/38174/products/arcteryx-mens-atom-ar-hoody-iliad.aspx

Trekitt great! Thanks for the reply. And the Atom AR; is that one more waterproof or is it just warmer when wet? Cheers.
@trekitt
@trekitt 4 жыл бұрын
@@krystovvify The Atom has less stitching, so the water will take longer to pass through - neither are waterproof though. For everyday use the Atom will be water resistant enough, but we'd stay away from down if you're expecting to wear it in the rain.

Wish you would show your jackets zipped up too instead of always open 1/4 the way

Fair point, but we need to keep the mic free. We'll try and include "zipped-up" shots in future. Thanks for watching.

Will this coat keep me warm at -20C?
@trekitt
@trekitt 5 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to say I'm afraid. It depends how many layers you have underneath, what you're doing in the jacket (i.e, mountaineering or just urban use), how warm you are as a person, windchill etc. If you could provide a little more information we will be able to give you a better answer. Kind regards.

@@trekittI normally put on a hoodie underneath and it would be for urban use only!
@trekitt
@trekitt 5 жыл бұрын
@@blaisecliche5848 Theoretically it should be fine then; since it's for urban use you can always wear a thicker baselayer/hoody if you feel a little cold.

anything made by "Arc'teryx" is for suckers (similar to anything made by Apple beyond 2018)

Hmmm, interesting comment. We love Arcteryx kit, the attention to detail and high quality of construction is industry leading. Their products are admittedly very "focused" and may not be to everyone's taste; but to tarnish them with such a generalisation is a little unfair.

@@trekitt I'm Canadian and we take great pride in brands/companies that are Canadian made so it's hard for me to admit it but it's the truth..Lots of other outdoor companies offer the same "attention to detail and high quality of construction" but they do it for a much more reasonable price (hence why I made the comparison to modern day Apple)

It looks like a nice jacket except for the collar and hood. As usual it's poorly designed. Look at 8:32. The collar is hitting him in the face when it isn't zipped all the way. He is also loosing a lot of heat down the front because it isn't zipped all the way. These jackets should have a zip off hood with the collar completely separate from the hood.This makes the jacket more versatile. The zipper should come up to the base of the neck and then the collar should be a flip-up collar that you snap.
