Thank you for letting us into such an important space in your life. I feel honored! Leslie, yo have a place for everything, and everything in its place. The wonder of it all is that you remember where everything is! I have a ton of duplicates, because I forget where or if I have them. I am intrigued by your chair. I don’t know where or how to sit as I end up with back and neck pain. A mini video on how you deal with that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for this great opportunity to glimpse into how an artist organizes an important aspect of life!

Thanks so much! I constantly tidy drawers or cupboards if they get too messy, so that helps with remembering where everything is. Being in there everyday helps too. I have definitely had times in my life where I couldn't find things and bought them again. The chair is so wonderful; it keeps the stress off your spine, which is helpful. I highly recommend it!

I think organised maximalism is a good thing (as long as it doesn't get out of control!). I like being surrounded by things I love; it's like working in the centre of a big hug. Yes, I LOVE my Victorian writing desk... I wish it could tell me its stories. :)

this video reminded me of my love for painting. i used to paint and sketch all day every day, but i havent been able to put much time into artwork since i left highschool 8 years ago. sometimes i worry that i've lost it forever, but seeing your studio assured me that the embers are still burning. thanks and greetings from Texas

Thank you for sharing! I love how it is organized, but still total eye candy. I love the mixture of woods and white furniture, the many different baskets and tins. It’s a *real* studio. Not an “instagram studio” as I call them….the ones that are a wash of white drawers and and Hobby Lobby decor items. Ick. I love an art studio that shows the many whims in an artist’s direction, or journey. You have beautiful collections and I can imagine it just fills you up to be in your studio. A great jumping start for creating!! Loved the whole video!! :)

Thank you so much! For a long time I was a little chagrined that my studio with its pink walls, white carpet and cast off furniture didn't fit the general aesthetic, but I've come to love it so much. I didn't realise until filming how many "retro" items I have in there (a bit like me!). :)

I got my BSc(CS) degree in the 90s and EVERY prof would bring in a stack of those cards to tell us how good we had it since technology had improved so much by the time we started 😂 (always got the story about dropping the stack of cards and how that made life miserable). Enjoyed the tour of your art studio and seeing all of the other things you’ve done over the years. I have a very small craft room that holds my history of hobbies from stitching/needlework supplies, crochet, jewelry making, scrapbooking/card making, cookie/cake decorating and various bits and bobs from previous crafts that I cannot get rid of; I love the thought the supplies are there and waiting for when the urge strikes. My painting / drawing supplies actually reside in an enclosed book shelf in my home office and in a rolling desk upstairs. When I retire, my first goal is to redo my tiny craft room and make it more usable (rather than simply storage).

Oh, I love this!! We are about the same age and your studio reminds me so much of me and what I have and store. I’ve never painted with oils or acrylics but almost everything else you showed I’ve used and have. You have a lot larger collection of things because I’ve only been painting for about 6 years but my collection is still quite large and growing! I love the mishmash of furniture and all of the antiques and treasures that you keep. Thank you so much for sharing with us!! I love it! ❣️

If the squeaking of the wooden drawers get on your nerves, a little candle wax or WD40 does wonders. I take out the drawer and just rub a piece of white candle over the wood that sits on the sliders - problem solved for the next 25 years :-) I am amazed how organized you are with all the supplies! Awesome! I use empty cigar boxes to store a myriad of little stuff (smoke shops give them away for one or two dollars). Stacked on top of each other in the book shelf they look adorable :-) And one of the bigger ones even serves well as a makeshift pochade box. I love to see organized workshops and art studios. It calms down my OCD and I also think it's a spiritual thing to see where creativity lives... 🙂 (The victorian travel 'office-box'!! OMG!!) Love it!

Thank you, Leslie. So Inspiring. Sometimes I think I should hang all of my art supplies, used or not, up on my walls so I can see them all. Each has a memory or a hope of 'Someday' I love all the colors around me. I'm really prone to 'out of sight, out of mind', but too much 'in sight' can be overwhelming, too. Your studio looks like a nice balance of both. And I got a few great ideas for adjusting my own space(s). Sending lots of Joy and Kindness to you.

I find it fascinating how each artist organizes their studios. Learned a couple of things. There are few artists that work only in one medium. We all seem to have been creative from a young age regardless of the medium) and we are all hoarders (we see artistic potential in everything). You have a lively bright studio and your right that view is everything.

This studio tour makes me feel a lot better about having art supplies for lots of different mediums. Thank you for showing us your studio!

Oh my, we have so much in common😊 My Dad also worked on computers the size of a room. He would often bring home the ends of the grid paper used at work and I would use it to create my bead designs for my beading loom!! I'm also envious of your Victorian writing desk, I have wanted one (with a secret compartment) since I was a kid. So glad to see that I have nothing to worry about when I feel I have too many art supplies, you have me beat, LOL!!! You have a wonderful studio. I feel so comforted by your space. If you’re a maker the temptation to experiment with numerous and very different media is inevitable. I’ve got a studio so much like this one that I’ve often felt guilty about the variety and volume of supplies. Currently I’m trying desperately to use up my sewing supplies to make my printmaking area more efficient. I concentrate on my clay and printmaking art these days and am increasingly forming a career out of them. However my experience with so many other media have informed the art I make now. Thanks for the tour.

I just happened on your youtube... I am so grateful... I, like you, have a diversity of mediums and techniques. I also LOVE order, and a place for everything, and everything in its place... in a perfect world 😂 that is.... For me, a cluttered space equals a cluttered mind... I find it hard to be creative... My original solution: To have the majority of my art supplies stored in boxes within shelving units. Clutterd order, so to speak. I now realise there is still too much visual clutter... your solution is brilliant.. seeing your space has resparked ideas and repurposing solutions... I am excited to get started. I am embarking on a whole new adventure... and revamping and cleaning my studio space is a fabulous place to start. 🎉

I always enjoy watching/viewing other artists' work spaces, because it's nice to see what kind of organization things they have, how they store things, and so on. The 2nd floor to our house divided in half: 2/3rds of it is the master bedroom suite, and the other 1/3 is again, split in half, length-wise: one side of the room is my husband's library, and the other side is my "art room". It's...extremely cluttered right now, due to depression and now, having been diagnosed with inattentive ADHD, and I had no drive to want to clean/tidy up until very recently, so, I'm working on improving those things. The walls to our upstairs has slanted walls half-way up the wall, so I'm very limited in what I can get for shelves and storage units - they have to be shorter than 32" (+/-). I've got two old computer desks up there - one of them has been painted white with some purple accents, and eventually, that's going to be the colour theme to my art room. The other computer desk is L-shaped, and will be painted the same way, once I get to that corner of the room, and currently, that particular desk is going to be dedicated to any of my fibre art stuff (knitting, crocheting, tablet weaving). My main art desk, which is technically a computer desk too, but more aimed towards for kids) is big enough for me to work at and do art at (painting, drawing. illustrating, bullet journaling, etc.) and it fits perfectly into a little nook that I have up there, where there's a window overlooking Lake Champlain (although, you can't really see it unless you're standing and peering over!) The desk that's currently painted white and purple, will be primarily my scribal desk. I study and re-create medieval illuminations, so I've got what I call a "scribal desk" that houses some of my paints and gilding tools. I also have a retro-looking toaster oven on there, for when I make my polymer clay things. I dabble in all sorts of things, and slowly, but surely, things are coming more together. The biggest obstacles right now is finding storage things that can fit against the walls, or can fit under desks and not get too much in the way of things (or at least, not stub my toe on when I sit at my desks), and just getting things cleaned and tidied up, and putting things into their new home/place in my art room. Even with it currently looking decent, it still looks a little cluttered and I have some drawers piled higher than I would've liked, but it's the best I can do for now 😅

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with ADHD and getting organised-- I've been there! One thing that always helps me if I'm feeling too overwhelmed is to set little tasks. One box a day. We don't have to tackle an entire project in one day. The little efforts soon add up. I find that Facebook Marketplace has lots of good furniture, and there's always IKEA too (great for unique spaces!). I hope you're soon back to working on your medieval illuminations and gazing across at the lake in your cosy space. :)

Just recently started taking it more seriously and I love it so much. I don't know how to do much. Thanks so much! Watercolour and gouache have definitely become favourite mediums for me too. I think I remember where everything is mostly because I'm in there every day and I reorganise a lot! :)

Hi Leslie. Loved your video and tour. Always nice to see your smile. Your studio makes sense and similar to how I've organized mine. I still have my oil squeeze jar from class at SUNY! I really enjoyed your oil painting classes. Hope to see lots more of your art with the warmer months approaching. Cheers, Mandy 🌞

Punch cards for the gigantic computers! I took a class in college where we wrote programs and then punched the cards. We had to turn in the cards and the computer center ran them overnight. That takes me back! I also used to spin and weave and knit and crochet a lot. Thanks for the tour, I’m happy to see I am not alone in having “just the right amount” of art supplies. Haha

LOVE your art studio Leslie -thank you for sharing with us. I've been wanting a dedicated room for all of my crafting but they are stashed throughout my house. I do have a small little nook downstairs that I use and could better organize and I will use your video as an inspiration. Thank you for all of your amazing videos and for teaching the community about art and painting.

You are helping me settle in more to my studio. I also have bits and bobs from my whole life with me in this space. Including my Chatty Cathy, my dad's metal kit box from the Navy, my mother's button box, and a lovely watercolour I found at the dump.

OMG, the IBM punch cards, my first job in 1967. Our art hoards are similar, though mine more scattered, painting in the bay window, printmaking in the basement. What I would give to have it all in one place. For me, substitute spinning and dyeing for weaving, add fountain pens and ink to the writing boxes. My BFA is in photography, so also add vintage cameras and film processing for alternative photo processes to the mix. BTW, it is your fault I just went down the tiny palette rabbit hole. Currently, I am mostly watercolour painting. Too bad collecting art materials is just as enjoyable as painting! 😂

Goodness, you sound like you love as many art forms as I do. I took a weaving class in grad school and was hooked. I think if my HS had been a bit "more" I'd have discovered 3-D arts like weaving and ceramics sooner and chosen a different degree. Then again, the tiny painting and watercolours are so much more achievable and I love the intimacy and immediateness of them. I hope you're loving your tiny palettes! New video tomorrow tempting you with more, haha. :)

Thank you for a great tour of your studio. I go on workshops all ‘need’ different supplies and I seem to have stuff everywhere in my art room. So great to get some ideas of how to store things as well as not feeling bad about how much stuff I have. Just found your channel Lesley and really enjoying it. Greetings from Margaret in Shropshire ❤

I love how your studio is situated. You make great use of the space. I recognize most of your supplies-you made me feel better about my supplies because I think all artists have a little bit of horder in each of y try them 😊❤. I seem to collect a lot of brushes and paper pads. I guess it’s what we’re all drawn to. I should send you some of my brushes. My brother does ceramics in his spare time and I have some of his beautiful face vases and I put my brushes in them. I have so many and I don’t use them all but when I see a sale, I’ll pick up brushes. Haha!

Love the studio. Like the guided snooping so fun. You do very good organizing . I call stuff inventory not hoarding. My family was giving me guff on what I keep. So I did modify on some things. I like styro meat trays for pallets with acrylic so I just toss it after use. Saves so much fiddling and washing . And small flat tins. It you have a work shop studio or any place we create their is going to be stuff. I find that people that are minamelists just borrow other people's stuff. Or they don't do anything other than pride themselves on negative space.
