Glowworms have become a big attraction in New Zealand and by far the most popular place to see glowworms is in the Waitomo Caves. Lucky for us, Northland has its own incredible glow worm cave that is free and can be accessed without a tour - the Waipu Caves.
The main glow worm sections of Waipu Caves are made up of three main caverns that are all connected by a small stream. This means when entering the Waipu Caves, you have to use footwear you are comfortable to fully submerge in water. Obviously, a torch is a must too. And before anything else, check the weather. The Waipu Caves can fill with water when it rains.
Once we’ve passed the cave opening it’s pitch black and we can hear the sounds of the water dripping off the cave’s ceiling and the rushing of the stream. As we move away from the light of the cave entrance and switched off our torches, we were completely surrounded by thousands of glowing blue lights. It was truly a magical experience.
