Back then when the Fulton fish Market was there you couldn't walk through there because of the stench coming out of the sewers from the fish slime. Yet all the fish were fresh and distributed by orders. The seaport built after the market moved to Hunts Point, had several restaurants available and several stores to shop . Then there was Captain hooks which many tourists went to pickup pirate stuff, sponges, sea shells etc. Then there was Sloppy Louise which made the most wonderful chowder anyone could have for lower Manhattan.

Just one thing. The lighthouse that was a memorial to the Titanic was originally on top of the Seamens institute. Not too far from where it is now. The South Street Museum was able to save it. When I last saw it was just sitting on the dock at the museum. At that time, they only had the light ship, a schooner, and a sailing ship. The light ship was the Ambrose, and the sailing ship was the Wavertree. The Museum was just getting started. The neighborhood was not very nice at the time either. Abandoned cars trash and generally run down. Good video.

Believe it or not, I ran an old press like one in your video. I only did it one Christmas season for a place called Miles Kimball. I printed on lunch bags and paper bread bags. That was about 30 yrs ago. I came home at night with more ink on me than the machine.

the south street seaport museum is so great! and largely because of the sheer number of artifacts they have. like you mentioned there was so much pottery and jewelry and personal belongings excavated in these parts and the museum has it all! the other best part is the amazing old boats they've up-keeped. you can walk on them and evrything, they are so grand!
