Inside Out actually helped me talk to my younger cousins about my depression, the whole greying out of the control board is a very powerful visual for kids. I was actually having a really bad week a couple months ago and woke up from a nap on my aunt's couch to one of the youngest in the family sitting right next to my head (yes, it gave me a heart attack). She came over to ask my if I was "All greyed up." and dumped a whole bunch of her stuffed animals on me to make me "yellow". Honestly it helped cause it was just so cute lol

8:22 - *“You can't just **_avoid_** sadness. It's a part of everything.”* And there he puts his finger right on the movie's central thesis. There is such a things as "toxic positivity", where absolutely _everything_ and _everyone_ has to be all "happy, happy, joy, joy" _all the time,_ and if you're not feeling it, even just for a moment, then there's something _wrong_ with you; you're a "downer", and you need to go away, because having an emotional _range_ is disturbing everyone else. This is certainly not a _uniquely_ American problem, but from an outsider's perspective, it does seem rather more prevalent there. 14:09 - *“I'm not getting sad over an imaginary character named ‘Bing Bong’.”* Hahahahaha, _HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA…_ Yeah, you are.

This movie is rough for me. Y'see, I was with a woman for some years, and her eight-year-old niece got diagnosed with leukemia. When "Inside Out" was released, it was often referenced for said niece to process her emotions, like when she'd get depressed. "Sometimes Sadness needs time at the control panel." That kind of thing. She didn't make it. She was cancer-free and received a bone marrow transplant, but there were complications. This girl - a blonde-hair, blue-eyed beauty with a magnificent smile - was gone. During her funeral, the one thing I noticed was that every single story about her involved people coming away with a smile. She was a living embodiment of Joy, and although I only knew her from a few family gatherings, her passing crushed me... especially because my older brother died from the very same illness when I was three and he was five. The reason this movie hurts so much... is that my girlfriend's niece was named Riley.

That is rough. Sorry to hear. She sounds like a great kid. When my older brother died suddenly a few years ago I asked people to send/tell me stories about him, and I asked for pictures. Hearing how much he meant to them helped me get through it.

The way I read Bing Bong being left behind is that her imaginary friend was no longer living in her head. The memories of him may remain but the imaginary friend was no longer "real" for lack of a better word. So yes, she would be able to recall him, but they would no longer go on any new adventures together.

This movie is so good and shockingly smart in how it portrays emotions and the inner workings of the mind as it develops and grows. I particularly like the concept of emotions being based on 5 elemental properties that can mix and become more complex and useful as we develop. Like sadness and joy becoming bittersweet, or fear and joy becoming exhilaration, things like that. It’s interesting how it’s so easy to see sadness and joy as polar opposites when in reality none of the elementals are truly opposite any of the others, they’re just different and distinct from each other and serve specific purposes.

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 It has a lot of metaphors which actually provide a proper explanation of how we think the mind works, such as storing memories when she goes to sleep, or the recurring joke about bringing back the same jingle over and over. This is personally my favorite from Pixar. I also moved when I was 11 and I had a million dreams about running away. And it feels selfish to be so upset when your parents are stressed from moving, and they’re trying so hard to highlight all the ‘exciting’ things about it. It felt like the most dramatic thing in the whole world then. Personally, anger was my primary emotion 😂 all I really want to say is, “I am upset you made this decision and my life is worse because you did and I think maybe you don’t care about my feelings.” But that’s not true and it’s not forever, and kids knowing how to express that sadness can only help them in the long run. And the way the message of this movie can apply to pretty much anything we can go through is wonderful and long lasting.

I absolutely love your dynamic (reminds me of my wife and I)! I had a good feeling that Matthew was going to enjoy (and completely get) this flick! First saw this when my boys were 8 & 9 in 2015. They loved it, and really understood the deeper meaning (or at least they said they did), but you're right, from the perspective of one that's older, it's deeper still. Revisited it for my daughter last year. I still cry (like full-on flowing tears) at Bing Bong's end. To me, this is a perfect family movie. Beautiful, deep meaning, great comedy (for all ages), and emotion - not saccharine, soppy, but deeply touching - and yes, introspective. Thanks guys! My joy emotion is on a high with this reaction!

This is such a good example of toxic positivity. Toxic positivity doesn't just show up from the blue. When her mum calls her "her happy girl", ot reinforces how Riley feels she always have to be happy, at all cost. That if she were to show other feelings it would be disruptive for how the family function. So by toxic positivity and staying their happy girl, they're putting the responsibility of how the family "should work" all on her. Parents are good at giving their children the one role, neglecting how there are several sides, characters and feelings to them. Like I grew up with my mother telling me constantly how distractive and forgetful I was, making me taking that role she gave me subconsciously to heart. If she'd looked deeper or made me do counseling she'd find I suffered from sever depression, even from third/fourth grade.

At first I was like "WHY ARE THEY IN DIFFERENT SEATS?! I DON'T LIKE CHANGE!" then when it was explained i was like, "ok, cool, i get it now". lol and I liked this. something different. On the film, I swear Pixar has formed a secret kabal with the tissue industry. I can't really add anything that hasn't been said already. amazing film that really hits hard. also 5-6 years is about standard for pixar (and disney animated films in general), sometimes longer. i think i had mentioned in a comment before, but they had been teasing monsters inc and finding nemo before even a bug's life came out. its incredible the amount of work that goes into these films. I certainly agree with Matt on Jurassic Park. I had already been a fan of films before that thanks to my parents (esp my mom), but that was literally a life changing experience. the novel it was based on by Michael Crichton was the first novel I ever bought, and ever read cover to cover, due to that movie. I had only read comics prior to that, and one novel i had had to read in school (where the red fern grows). I've now read hundred of books. The soundtrack was the first time I enjoyed instrumental music. I took up drawing a bit thanks to that, and i had hated drawing prior to that. it also got me interested in 3d animation (tho, the lost world it was really pushed me into it, but it started with JP). Tho, i will say that my views on the newer films probably differs from Matt's, based on his comments here. lol esp the last one. but then, i'm probably in the minority on the last one in general. being a huge fan of the books too (and the comics released after the first film), it did some things i had been waiting for since reading the lost world novel, that even the lost world film didn't do. so that likely lead alot to my feelings on it.

Mathew, seeing Jurassic Park in the theater is a core memory for me as well. I was 5. I had seen movies in the theater before that, including Fivel Goes West. But the impact of seeing Jurassic Park in the theater at 5 years old was a game changer for me. Brought my love, fascination, appreciation, and wonderment for film and going to the theater to a much higher level. Anyway, Inside Out is amazing. And this was a wonderful reaction. Next to Wall-E, this is my favorite Pixar film. However, I think Inside Out has the best screenplay to any Pixar film. Inside Out is about emotions and I'm bipolar. Emotions are vital and relatable to everyone so this movie naturally reaches and moves many people. But because I have a condition that increases the impact or level on which I experience or feel emotions and my condition also makes it especially difficult to control or balance my emotions, Inside Out speaks to me and moves me in a very profound way.

Being able to process emotion is so important for everyone. That's one of the ways Pixar outdid themselves this time: they found a way to help people at a fundamental level and they didn't have to be preachy about it. Pete Docter and the other writers have built up this way to relate to people and communicate with them and they follow that way with pride and passion. My heart aches for any future generation that goes by without this kind of help.

Sadly, she passed away suddenly (heart attack/blood clot) on her way home to me on the 21st August 2023 and we couldn't find her for 12 days (neighbours didn't check their gardens thoroughly enough). She was only 3 years old and it's been devastating :( Seeing Pippin reach for you got me all in my emotions, so I guess it's the perfect film for that too. Great reaction video. Glad you both loved Inside Out!

I concur. Pineapple and bacon pizza is worth living for... Just like pork and pineapple fried rice, but that's another story.

I think moving house for a child is quite traumatic, because you are losing the comfort and security of the environment you grew up in. Your parents will try to rationalise the reasons why you are all moving, but you are focusing on the losses. Before the internet,. staying in touch with friends far away was not easy . We weren't really the letter-writing type, and boys weren't really the type to stay on the phone and communicate like girls. Its a very clever, emotional, and witty movie that Pixar does so well.

on the Bing Bong thing... do either of you remember your Imaginary Friend?... I kind of do, it was a panda bear named Jimmy... (here's the weird part)... in HS my best friend was named Jim. Although I never called him Jimmy. Please look into reacting to "Wanted" - Macavoy & Jolie and "Paycheck" - Afleck & Thurman Oh and... BTW ... 🎶🎶"Triple Dent Gum"🎶🎶

Eichman is pronounced "Ike mun" Also the reversed seating is a great visual signifier of the cinema sherpa and first timer. I say keep it up for when it's applicable. When both of you are first timers standard seating is fine

“Take her to the moon for me” gets me every time. Pixar actually hired two psychologists to be the scientific experts for the movie.

The counsel turning black was the final stage of depression, the entire movie was the different steps leading to it, no longer enjoying things you used to, turning away from friends and family, losing your train of thought ect... I’ve heard psychologists use this movie to describe the stages to children and help them work through it.

I think the core memories where re-intergraded, but since her understanding grew they are no longer 1 emotion. (Like sadness, other emotions touched them and they become multicolored)

Personally I think it's very difficult if not impossible to develop compassion and empathy without sadness, it's a key emotion in developing that. Any emotion taken to too much of an extreme can be unhealthy and attempting to suppress any emotion to 0 is also unhealthy.
