I couldn’t agree more! I love how movies nowadays do such a great job at touching on mental health in animated films for children. In regards to depression, this movie pretty much hits the nail on the head in terms of accuracy. “Puss in Boots: The Wishing Star,” does an excellent job at illustrating what anxiety and panic attacks are like. In turn, movies like these help children to better understand their own feelings and teach them that their emotions are both valid and a normal part of life. ❤

Loved the reaction. I watched Cinema therapy react to this movie on KZbin, and they explained this movie so eloquently. Joy was really reinforcing toxic positivity and wasn't allowing Riley to feel sad. Moving away from the home you've grown up in, away from friends, and family is supposed to be sad. When they reacted to it, they mentioned the passing of one of their mothers and how all the good memories they had of their mom were painted blue. I cry every time I watch this movie. Sadness clearly controls my emotions lol!

bryce 🥺 i feel the same every time i rewatch watch inside out.. i like how at the end you guys caught onto how sadness didn’t know why but she just felt the need to touch the memories, sometimes we need to accept sadness and let it be- sorta like standing in the rain and feeling the drops on our skin, appreciating the rain as it is here right now. we don’t know exactly when the rain will pass but what we do know is that it will pass at some point and that the weather changes, the sun and rainbow will slowly peek through the clouds & the birds will sing again

There's one moment in Inside Out that never fails to make me sob. It's instantaneous like flicking on a light switch. It's when Riley is being held by her parents at the end, and there's a zoom in on her face. When she sighs out in relief from being in her parents' arms--I just can't help but cry. It's such a satisfying release of so much pain and the realization of finding safety and love.

"Sadness caused this" well actually, the whole chaos was caused when Joy didn't accept Sadness as a "valid" emotion. Core memories being sad isn't a bad thing, you actually learn from these just as much as you learn from joyful moments. Idk, imagine if Riley has a pet who dies. It'd create a sad core memory. What if one of her parents dies? (yknow like in a lot of Disney movie) What if Riley gets a boyfriend and they break up? Probably other sad core memories. As long as you're human, you're bond to know sadness in your life. In big moments as well. Joy not accepting and not allowing Riley to be sad is actually what caused the whole problem. And since we gotta believe that the emotions inside Riley are actually Riley... well it's all that Riley didn't allow herself to properly and normally express her emotions, so she lost touch with them.

The emotions evolved as they grow. Like sadness is needed to feel empathy, which was the one in charge of the mum as she is the empathetic one in the family. Anger could evolve into something more protective, ambitious, or confidence like the dad.

It's funny that everybody hates and blames sadness at first but then everybody cheers for her and agree that she's needed :) Also: emotions can evolve in time and be more complex as we grow up, and so mom's sadness, being in charge, is rather empathy Also also: mixing emotions can create other emotions, like joy and fear may be excitement (like "a good stress")

There are novelizations from the POVs of each of the emotions, and it really drives home that Sadness is as much Riley's protector as the others are. Apparently, when she popped into existence right after Riley was born, her immediate thought was "Holy cow, this world is loud and bright and cold, and if I don't tell this girl's parents, they won't get her a blanket!"

This movie does a great job of representing how our emotions really work. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust really are the five emotions that current psychology has identified as the core emotions. Everything else is some combination, or permutation of those five, as far as we know. The movie does a great job of illustrating how Joy really isn't the centerpiece of everything, no matter how much it tries to be. The whole ordeal in the movie was not caused by Sadness touching core memories. It was caused by Joy trying to control everything, and acting like she was more important than the others. Joy is actually quite selfish, controlling, and ignorant. Sadness helps us connect to people and things around us, while Joy is more internally focused. I kinda wish we got to see more from Anger, Fear and Disgust, though.

I think each emotion character manages more than one emotion as the person ages. Like, they had to limit the number of characters for the movie, but there are other emotions the characters have to make Riley express. Empathy is part of sadness, anxiety comes from fear, and jealousy probably falls under anger or disgust.

Sadness was drawn to the core memories because Riley was sad to be leaving her old life behind and all the memories that made her *her* but because she believed her parents needed her to be happy, Joy kept overshadowing Sadness and wouldn't let Riley feel what she needed to feel. Riley was literally forcing herself to feel happy until she couldn't feel *anything*. It's a very good depiction of depression. It's also worth noting that the only emotion who has a mixed color scheme is Joy. Her hair is blue to depict sadness because you can't feel joy without feeling sadness.

You know, the reason Bing-Bong couldn't read is because he was created when Riley was 3 years old, during her pre-school years. That is also why he got so upset when the mind workers started demolishing parts of Imagination Land that represented that early childhood of hers. He is basically the embodiment of Riley's early childhood and, when he faded away in the Dump, along with all the memories of Riley's early years, that was basically the movie telling Riley was growing up and she no longer needed them.
@spaceshiplewis

Riley's Mom was controlled by sad because she also had to leave her friends and comfort of Minnesota. Riley's mom's sadness came out as persuasive denial where she tries to be happy and also the fleeting thoughts of why did she choose marry Riley's dad. Riley's dad was controlled by anger because his work had to uproot his happy family and on top of it the move wasn't going easy because he had to be called in early and the moving boxes were late (should have moved those things before the family got there or before the big work deadline). His anger came out as standoffish withdrawal from the family and comforting himself by thinking about hockey, where he would usually be more interactive with Riley.

Maybe it’s combination of one’s journey and how many feminine/masculine traits you have. Riley’s dad seems to be more “masculine” and his leader is anger, while Riley’s mom has Anger at the forefront. Riley seems to be in a place where she shares both traits of her parents and also has Joy as her leader. Idk though, that might not hold. It could just be random as well. Or the emotions could be genderless and change as their ‘person’ grows..?

Riley needed to be sad... because she was sad. You're right, Sadness was changing the memories because they were happy memories that reminded Riley of her previous home, memories that she could no longer remember with the same joy she used to. It also served to show that toxic positivity is a thing. Despite doing it unknowingly, Joy was responsible for everything. She was acting like a control freek, always wanting to be in charge because she was the only one that could make Riley happy. However, she neglected to see the importance of Sadness and kept doing everything she could to keep her from being in control. But we got to see Sadness' real role in Riley's mind, as she is the one that can help Riley to tell others she needs help, besides allowing her to feel empathy for others. It also showed how different emotions work with each other in kids and adults. While with kids emotions run wild and are always competing with each other to get control, with adults they work together and the way they do it is a reflection of their personality: with Mom, Sadness is in control, reflecting her more compassive and empathic side; meanwhile, with Dad, Anger is in control, reflecting his authority as a parent.

"Despite doing it unknowingly, Joy was responsible for everything." Reminded me of the theory that this is why the move to San Francisco seemed to come out of nowhere. There's no way Riley could've missed that. Her parents must have told her. She must've seen them start packing. But Joy convinced Riley that it wasn't a big deal; that maybe it was just a short trip, they'd be back, etc. Joy was responsible for Riley not processing or coping with this reality.

I didn’t realize this until I rewatched it as an adult but I think Riley was depressed. That’s why Sadness felt the need to take over. Also I cry with Bryce in all of these lol

Just now watching your reaction and I got to the part where you all said you never had an imaginary friend. Ever think it could be possible that you did, but the memories faded because you had to grow up? And now you can’t remember?

Pretty good point, but for me I have memories of being a kid and thinking people with imaginary friends were weird and I didn't understand it, so I definitely know I never had one

I always wished the film ended with a flash forward where Riley is an adult and an astronaut on the moon. Then she faintly hears Bing Bong’s song off in the distant.

I love this movie so much. Think about it - we all feel sad watching this, many or most of us crying. But in that sadness, we find connection to each other, a feeling of being understood, and we come to better understand our own emotions by playing with the ideas in a creative way. You chose to be sad by watching this after being warned it would be this way and I chose to be sad by watching this video. And we're both better off for it. Also, I love that the mom's dominant emotion is sadness because I think that makes for a very empathetic person- her deeper understanding of what it means to be sad enables her to better help others navigate their own sadness which might not be as familiar. It's just such a beautiful movie.

i wanted to add onto your comments about how other emotions other than joy eventually take the lead. you're right saying that as a kid the emotions are black and white and all you really know is being happy or sad. emotions are much more complex than that and as we get older, we discover new ones. for riley's mom, even though her leading emotion is sadness, it may be because it represents being empathetic, caring, and understanding. riley's father's leading emotion was anger but that also represents confidence, determination, and maybe even a protector. of course its the most stereotypical description of two parents but since its disney its a good representation of how complex emotions are to children. the headquarters for each head also looks different according to their personalities. rileys mom was kind of like a theater stage, the dads was a control room, the boy that riley bumps into looked like a gaming room and rileys was kind of like a spaceship. also i was hoping you guys would mention the control panel graying out. you said it was because riley was beginning to feel numb but it was also a small peak into what depression was in rileys head. they couldnt make her feel anything. kids may not be able to process emotions yet but it helps give them an understanding of what they are. my little cousin walked in on me crying once and he asked me "are you blue?" great movie

I have a low opinion of Disney/Pixar these days but this movie is still a banger and I love every minute of it. The broccoli scene - I learned later that they filmed different foods for different country releases for what Riley was going to be disgusted by, which I thought was pretty funny. Funnier than the scene itself. Psychology courses have used this film to discuss emotional growth among other topics too, I think. A lot of kids can identify with her, being uprooted, losing friends, losing connections, trying to rebuild with parents who have their own lives that take up their limited time and thoughts.. Riley feeling like she's misunderstood and ignored...the bus scene always makes me tear up..

One of the best things about this movie is how it distinguishes sadness from depression (the board going grey, feeling nothing)… it’s super emotional, there’s no time I’ve watched it and not cried, even when I watch reactions… sending love and good energy to all of you 🤍 Edit: I think what makes Sadness important in this concept is empathy… Joy actually said “they all came to help because of sadness” which is feeling sad about someone else, so empathy… and I believe that’s also why mum has sadness as the leading emotion
