Inside Perm 36: The Last Gulag

🇷🇺 Under Stalin the G.U.LAG ( Main Administration of Camps ) system spread out across what was the former Soviet Union, swallowing up citizens and foreigners from all corners of the empire. Ukrainians, Estonians, Kyrgyz etc. were taken from their homes and sent north in box cars to the camps to work away their stretches. Millions passed through the camps and many never returned home. Those camps have long been dismantled or converted into regular factories and work places and you'd be hard pressed to know that you were visiting a former camp. However Perm 36 logging camp has been preserved and so I travelled to the very edge of Europe to a village called Kutchino to visit the last Gulag and to see how the prisoners lived.

I know there are countless posts saying great things, but this man has changed my view of the world and improved my life more than anyone on YT by far. He doesn't just go to the most famous tourists sites (he does some of that and I am glad for it too). But this video perfectly shows how he often ends up in the most random, generic towns meeting the most ordinary people. This is real travel. Going to the Kremlin honestly tells me little about life in russia. Going to a small town and staying in an average hotel and hanging out with local people and showing food available- those things honestly DO help me understand what life is like there. Thank you.

"GULag" is the main administration of the camp's network. Nowadays FSIN's main office is still situated in the same house, in the same building as it was before. The same things are in action yet no one cries about "modern «goolag»". Because there's no paid money for those cries. If you fear that, then you are a moron. I just state that. As someone who is from Russian descent and can speak/read the language, I really appreciate this documentary/vlog. It truly shows how the Russian people are friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. They always want to show the outside world what's really going on and want to help you along your journey. Besides all of the politics and hardships they face, they truly want the best for themselves and everyone around them. I only really visited Russia while I was 5, but my mother was from that background. Always hard working, diligent, intelligent, and fun! Russians really know how to take advantage of their surroundings, make fun of it and have a great time. You really enlightened me on my understanding of Russia as a descendant of these lands, and I truly appreciate it.

Russians commonly say this, such and such was built by the Germans but a lot of Russian architecture does look somewhat teutonic. Bit of a myth. I'm sure German POWs built some things in Russia but not to the extent people often say. Also, I think when people saw prisoners building things they may have assumed they were German POWs, but in reality the vast majority were GULAG prisoners.

@@steven-k. You may be right. Just to notice, Soviet architecture was a standard and quite different since Bolshevik s took power in the early 1900. from street traces to house plans. It is quite different in some areas the way rooms and distributions are built in an architectural manner. The ones I make reference are old town areas around Perm. A well known weapons and missile manufacturer city since imperial days. That even was not specified in maps nor allowed outsiders in and out.

Great video. Went there about 2 years ago. The thing that stuck with me most was the building dedicated to those who died in the uranium mines that were part of the GULAG system and the small open-air box the political prisoners were put into for their daily half-hour of exercise. The pile of electrical switches the political prisoners were made to manufacture and the cramped 4 person cells stick in my mind too. I assume they did not let you film those places, or perhaps you let them be out of respect. Haunting place.
