This video popped up as something the algorithm thought I would enjoy watching. I was in Al Hilla from June to September 2003. I toured the Ruins of Babylon, walked thru the labyrinth, ate the local food and engaged with the locals. We would spend hours at a time, on our days off, near the palace or eating along the river. I was even stitched up there by one of our medics. Of the several places I had stayed in Iraq, Hilla was my favorite. I always felt safest there. It sure looks like a lot has changed, and changed for the better. It's nice to see what it has become rather than how I remember it when we left the area.

Doug, what you tried after lunch towards the end of your video was a mix of frankincense and myrrh tree resins. In Arabic: علك اللبان أو علكة المر. Would’ve tasted very bitter - numerous health benefits. What Hussein would’ve had was acacia tree gum (commonly known as water gum). In Arabic: علك الماء. Again, many health benefits. And pretty much is tasteless like Hussein mentioned. It sort of serves as a dry mouth treatment - saliva substitute. Does almost disable your jaw after a while of chewing it though haha - gets too hard but you still wouldn’t want to chuck it. Quite addictive in a good way, as anyone who has tried it would know. You two were just talking about two different gums. P.S. Thoroughly enjoyed this series. Kudos to you.

@Doug what you had at min 15 which your guide called water gum was actually frankincense (Gum Arabica) its a natural plant product used widely in Iraq and the Mid east…nothing artificial at all. And we call it bitter gum علك مر the water gum one is more chewy and not as bitter. Also i know it tastes bad but honestly if you have an upset stomach or IBS after chewing it you will feel so much better. Thats why people chew it in iraq after food to help with any stomach issues they might get
