I was born in this place Manenberg, my mom's family is from there. I dated a girl there some years ago and even though I have family there it's a bad idea to he there after dark. There are 2 police stations within 4 miles of where they interviewed those guys but police focus on containing the problems to Mananberg because they're powerless inside of it. When it gets bad the police will sometimes conduct largescale raids and come in with a fleet of armoured vehicles but every single time I can remember of it ended with the police asking community leaders to facilitate a ceasefire with whichever gang is involved.

On the outside, anyone can start a gang, most likely someone will be part of a gang that has the most influence in their neighborhood, or one they started with their friends. But the pillars of South African gangsterism ar the numbers gangs "26, 27 & 28" these never change, you can only claim 1 of these gangs only once you've been to prison.

Each number(26,27,28) has it's own set of rules and rankings just like in military. Each number is a gang in prison. But 26 gang are related to discipline and money. 27's to blood discipline and murder. And 28 are a whole different breed

So for people that don't know Outside of prison in every part of South Africa not just Cape town there are different gangs BUT when gang members go to prison they then join a prison gang those prison gangs are only 26,27 and 28. So you could be a 27 gang member but outside of prison you in a different gang. To put the danger in perspective, any gang in America are gangs in a 1st world country where you can't compare the poverty to a country like South Africa. the interviewer is giving others insight into the lives of colored people that were and is still being pushed aside to this day and gangsterism is one of the sad dividers between our people but they are so deep into it and blind that they don't see our land is being stolen under our feet by other nations like the europeans, arabics, nigerians, indians, Chinese, and so many others so on the interviewers side I would say he definitely trying to tell the story yet obviously trying to make a living from it too but that's okay because he himself comes from a life of drugs so to give back in this way is good because that young boy you see that's so passionate today have been pulled out of gangsterism because of this video and has gone viral for it so they trying to help where they can too

There are a couple numbers ,26 ,27, 28 and the big 5, now in the cape flats the diff gangs affiliate with the diff numbers ,just like there are numbers that affiliate with each other at some levels in the flats you might find 3 diff gangs calling one number but go by diff names ,the numbers are more of a law ,code and way of life , in and out of prison ,knowing what i know now prison is not safe per say ,its more of a more control over his life thun out side ,and its right a "brotherhood" to a point where the numbers rarely clash with each other and work together to make the prison go round with the drug activity left one number and other number do other things ,so it ends up the numbers need each other ,before a clash of the numbers the bosses or leadership will have agreed on it in some way ,

In South Africa, there are basically 2 types of gangs, Street Gangs and what most people term prison gangs or "The Number". The number typically consisted of 3 primary groups: The 26's, 27's and the 28's, but as the years went on, there have been a few offshoots and factions coming OuT, influenced by politics of People coming from different parts of the country, most notably the R.A.F3 and R.A.F4, Big5, etc... these are all prison structure, roles and secret codes nobody outside of those whore are part of that particular group knows. Each "number" stands upon its own foundations, secrets, language & laws. For example, I may be in prison with My own blood brother, raised together by same parents, having grown up speaking the same language, but if We're not in the same number, He can never hear or understand when I talk to a member of My own number, or know how to read the meanings behind My tattoos, etc... On the streets though, We may, in some cases, become members of the same street gang, but some people prefer street gangs made up of members of the same number or from a number whose codes and principles align with theirs, because there's more trust, discipline, and the laws are more strictly obeyed. In a street gang, someone can sometimes lose their mind and go all crazy, but numbers are the law, even when they're applied outside of prison system. Those laws are tattooed on you for you to take it with you to your grave - you live by them, and die with them. The secrets and the laws of what happens inside those different numbers will only ever be known to the different members of those numbers, according to their ranks. You have to graduate up the ranks to know a little bit more, and graduation is different in every number..

So, the "numbers gang" is a SA prison gang, or at least it started as a prison gang, not sure if they have an outside presence now.. But you're either a 26, 27 or 28. They are seen as 3 seperate gangs, but still have a central identity - "you're a number". There's a lot of code talk as well, strict policies of silence.. and there's been cases young boys, fronting as a number only to get caught out as soon as they fail the secret handshakes / code talk, and void their lifes in the process. There's a lot of structure and the roles of the gang members are determined, by your number. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbers_Gang
