For the South African version of the favela, look up 'informal settlements'. There you'll see shacks on mountainsides with no running water, electricity or gas, no roads, and lots of places that are essentially impossible to police. What is interesting about this series of documentaries is the fact that the camera crews shooting the documentaies can gather all of the evidence needed to convict the gang members and their leaders - yet the gangs continue to thrive unopposed and undaunted; which leads me to conclude that the gangs, police and the politcians are all in bed with the cartels importing drugs into these poor communities. Also, if the police intentions were to actually apprehend a criminal, they wouldn't sponsor a Rose Bowl parade of police cars to do so - which gives any criminal that has a modicum of common sense a heads up to chill until the police leave. This is utter madness and is an insult to my intelligence.

I feel for the people living in these conditions, but I will never understand why they insist on having children. Like, no job, no money, living in a shack, being surrounded by gangs, violence, crime and drugs, or even being an addict themselves, why do they think it’s a good idea to bring a child into that situation? I get that they might not have access to birth control pills (or the shot, or implant, etc) but you’d think they at least would get some condoms and make sure they won’t have even more mouths to feed.
