Van Cortlandt has a nice amount of wildlife (I'm a wildlife photographer and do lots of work there) and the bike trail in the park is actually part of the Empire Trail, which goes from Battery Park all the way up and beyond the Bronx(can't recall where the trail ends. I love Riverdale. However, it is isolated, which makes it lovely, but if you commute to Manhattan every day, you're better off in a proper commuting suburb like Scarsdale or Great Neck. From those spots you're in midtown in 45 minutes or less. From Riverdale you're on an express bus - not all that much cheaper or faster, and subject to various road delays and foul weather. The apartments are great, though, and some of the postwar bldgs have lovely, large, outdoor pools. If you're old, frail, rich and Jewish, the Hebrew Home is the best long term care facility in the city. If you can visit someone in there, you get the same views as from Wave Hill.
