One anecdote of M-10’s in action: on Operation Jupiter (10th July 44) an M-10 of 86th A/Tk Regt, Royal Artillery got a direct hit from a mortar bomb which landed in the open turret killing the entire crew except I think the driver who got away seriously wounded. Ammunition caught fire, burning the whole thing out. Another hazard was shrapnel from airbursts Some regts made improvised turret roofs from scavenged metal.
@derekbaker3279
@derekbaker3279 3 жыл бұрын
The Germans were very skilled with the use of air burst artillery, and the '88 was especially deadly in that role (almost like firing flak horizontally!), e.g. in the Hochwald Forest battles. I know that, eventually, manufactured armoured roofs were added to M10s and M36s during WWII & were used with M10s & M36s in Korea, but I do not know if the Brits, the Canadians & other Commonwealth nations, and/or the Poles ever did the same with their Achilles AFVs.

I knew eventually the Chieftain would have an answer to my question about whether there was a good HE round for the 17 pounder. He said yes but not til late in the war. So I guess the 75 mm was a superior HE round til a least 45 or so?
@DC9622
@DC9622 6 жыл бұрын
You have forgot Archer which replaced it, 44/45. I think you are under playing the 17Pounder, and the APDS round which was also available for the 6 pound AT gun, in Normandy it was the only Allies gun on para with the German long barrel 75 and the tigers 88. I think there was more to leaving the 76mm behind, than the message didn’t get to them. 1,678 M10 were delivered to the Commonwealth forces, who change out the 76mm for the 17 pounder. The 76mm you have to get within 500m to engage a tiger 1 or panther. They can be engaged by the 17 pounder 1200 meters, but accuracy drops beyond that. You don’t go to that trouble if there is nothing significantly wrong. The US did not rush in the M36 with the 90mm after Normandy if everything was rosy. I think it is the old not invented here syndrome from both sides. The numbers confirm, whilst the Panzer IV was the most numerous in Normandy about 900, followed by the Panther 650 and Stug 600. Total for all Tiger I and II in the Normandy Campaign: Tiger I - 123 received, 122 lost Tiger II - 47 received, 40 lost. We also know these faced the 21st army of the Canadians and British who faced 6 Panzer divisions whilst there were 2 in the US sector. So the 17 pounder was not half bad, given the number of Firefly’s went from 86 early June to over 200 by 31 July. The Northamptonshire Yeomanry engagement, 3 Tigers in 12 minutes by, a Firefly at range. The Firefly, is British mentality, make do and mend, the Cromwell version Challenger was not an overwhelming success, the Sherman solution not fantastic worked, the comet was better but too late, but the issue was not solved until Centurion which quickly went 20 pounder.

I read somewhere that the Israelis bought American M10s after the war and later converted them to 17pdr themselves. That would mean it isn't an Achilles after all and the markings are an accurate restoration while the gun is one of those Israeli post-war modifications.

Old video but just FYI, I asked a good friend of mine who has access to the SABOT accuracy issues original documents. IE he developed kenetic munitions for the US military and is a history buff. His own munitions collection fills a bedroom and IIRC he has a 17pdr SABOT round in that collection. According to his research on the SABOT accuracy testing boiled down to flawed ammo being tested.. IE not up to specs. However the report came out before the spec issue was discovered which is why we see a lot of talk about how the 17pdr SABOT ammo is inaccurate. In reality the SABOT ammo was very accurate when the proper specs where followed while being manufactured. The SABOT ammo issued for combat use should have stressed the specs because the discovery of the Spec issue happened before the round went into production for military issue.
@brainplay8060
@brainplay8060 5 жыл бұрын
It wasn't just the Brits who had issues with sabot rounds. Early in the war, the US played with them for a while as did the Canadians. Both cases had issues with manufacturing not producing spec ammo. Remember that sabots require exceedingly perfect fitting otherwise the sabots would release the round unevenly. This happens a LOT when playing with new technologies or manufacturing processes. It looks on paper but then you have to figure out how to get lathe like quality with a lower end casting. The US gave up on it while the Canadians perfected it.
@kckey4535
@kckey4535 5 жыл бұрын
@@brainplay8060 Very well put. Hense when the Brit 17pdr SABOT round was released for combat use, the manufacturing issues where ironed out.- I am going to walk back a bit because after thinking about it IIRC the some of the early APDS rounds where of earlier stock when issued which still had some manufacturing problems. These where the first batch issue which where rare. When the full production came on line the issues where sorted out. What baffles me is that the UK offered the SABOT rounds for the US 57mm guns, which is the Brit 6pdr round and the US refused them and went with the APCR instead which sacrificed penetration. The US relied on APCBC rounds and some APCR rounds. The 75mm Sherman had some HEAT rounds, but these did not offer much of anything the M61 round didnt.
@brainplay8060
@brainplay8060 5 жыл бұрын
@@kckey4535 HEAT rounds were fired out of a rifled chamber. Spin cancels out the penetrative effect as the explosion become dissapated. This is why all modern HEAT is fired from smoothbore and fin stabilized which doesn't spin. Fin stabilization really solved most ammo problems including sabot problems ironically. The spin just causes small irregularities to become increasingly noticeable.

The 17 pounder safety looks like the same system used on the Russian Mosin-Nagant rifle in which the striker knob was simply pulled back and twisted out of the way, except that the Mosin-Nagant relied solely on spring tension and didn’t have a detent to hold it in position.

Engines shown with valve covers off for some reason. It does let you see the 3 rocker arms. two for valves and one for the injector. If you have the covers off it's usually because you have a sticking injector that is not responding to the throttle movements.

Your mentioning both the LA and LC engine used in this vehicle leads me to a question.First, as you know, Detroit Diesel engines can be set up to run clock wise or counter clock wise,so do you know if the engines in this vehicle were set up that way? That may explain why the parts were labeled for LA or LC engine.There is a lot of parts commonality between the two engines but there are also parts that are only used on an LA or LC engine.

The counterweight was probably part of the accuracy issues. Unless its tuned to the harmonics of that gun its going to be inconsistant with at which point in the barrels whipping motion (caused by said harmonics) the projectile exits the muzzle. The muzzle brake could also be an accuracy reducer when harmonics are bad...i got a screenshot of the harmonics at work in the video just done with ian , in texas. Ill post it on fb when i can...youtube really needs to allow pictures to be posted.

+ApexPredator_ They froze. The metal of the vehicle would freeze and so would anyone inside. The engine would only stay warm for so long and they couldn't leave it running because that might give away their position and they had to conserve fuel. They would get out and try to stay warm just like regular infantry by using a fire if allowed and blankets if not. The canvas cover would be useful against the rain and keeping snow out of the fighting compartment.

Fun! The gunner is an integral part of the weapon system, so it's strange that the ergonomics are so unfavorable for his position. One might expect the designers to be especially careful when making sure that turret traverse is easy to accomplish and that the gunner's traverse controls do not interfere, one with the other. On the plus side, the manufacturers made an awful lot of money, so who cares about the crew? They're just people . . . it's not like they're more valuable than profit.

Oh, you had some trouble getting on top of this tank, easy to see why. Talking about the crew seats: the tank designers seem to have forgotten to install seat belts, lap, and shoulder. And, for God's sake, no airbags. The production company said that they could offer the tank with optional power seats, but the Army said it would pass on that option. So if you want to be the driver, then shorter is better. Five feet six, or less, is excellent. If you want an automatic transmission, then have a German design your tank. After this review, do the SNUG III.

For those of us with bad hearing (mine mostly due to military service), turn up the music at the beginning and the end. Turn off the music when the guy is talking! Background noise is distracting and pointless. Why do you need music if someone has something interesting to say? It's like a guy who takes a date to a loud restaurant because he knows he's boring and doesn't have anything a woman wants to hear (to remedy that, practice a few interesting life stories, learn a few jokes, and listen more in a quiet restaurant).

Dave Duffy most women don't have anything interesting to say either. Loud restaurants are awesome to remedy boring conversations that until it is time to get jiggy :). I'l go to quit restaurants with friends who actually have interesting things to say..... I'm guessing you haven't dated in a while lol. There is a reason there are lot of those loud restaurants around everywhere and why they are so popular.

I wouldn't want to be in a seat down inside that thing if we got shot lol, especially if the gun was to the front therefore sealing any way out for the driver especially if you couldn't turn the turret. Edit: I see there is an escape hatch now lol
