Earlier than that. Nick posted his "unofficial tour" of the Arsenalen museum, which he made as part of his filming visit, in early October last year, two months before the big public event. And we don't know how long that was delayed in posting. The footage for this video is six months or so old at least.

The commanders hatch comes down to battle need. The Americans were relying on British battle experience when designing the M4. The British tankers were opposed to cupolas after France, they were afraid that the cupola might be shot off killing the CO. In Africa the commander always fought exposed because you could always see the enemy at long range. When the Allies invaded Sicily ranges closed and it became dangerous to show any part of you body outside the tank and cupolas were demanded again.

Agreed. When you read the accounts from British tankers in Normandy, you can really see what a morale boost it was for British tank crews (even in regular 75mm Shermans), as it meant there was always something around that could deal with any German tank encountered. It was of course far from perfect, and had design challenges that reduced its effectiveness compared to later 17 pdr armed tanks, but given the failure of British tank design to made a proper tank for the 17 pdr in time for the end of WWII, it was the right choice to deploy it IMO.

The Firefly makes me think of the early deployment of the Corsair aboard carriers in Royal Navy service, something of a desperation move, i.e. "We need this NOW, even if it's not really suited to this situation." The Corsair went into RN carrier service before the US Navy was ready to accept them on carriers, because the landing characteristics were rather nasty and hazardous initially, but the Royal Navy had an otherwise poor selection of fighters at the time, that were even less suited to carrier aviation.

'Hornet' was a enemy Tank or SP gun (Stug/Jagpanzer) have heard British Armoured veterans from the Normandy battles, use the term. Most targets seem to have been engaged by the whole Troop, ie 4 tanks, if possible. Most British Sherman troops had one Firefly, Guards Armoured Sherman troops often had two Fireflys. If you want to get some idea about how effective the Firefly could be check out this Canadian documentary about the end of German Tiger 'ace' Michael Wittmann: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5mqZKCbgMmAmZY bear in mind that most of the German Panzer Divisions in the West were fighting the British and Canadian forces in Normandy from June - August 1944, not the American's.

Excellent read...Sherman Firefly (New Vanguard) by David Fletcher. Kindle edition. The need for this up gunned Sherman was identified by the British following the capture of a Tiger in Tunisia., and the recognition that the existing gun would be inadequate. The David Fletcher book explains how initial experiments on their own initiative by British Officers, were taken over by Vickers ( I think ) and the 17 pdr towed gun, adapted to fit the Sherman. Rushed into production to be ready for D-Day, this was the only Allied tank to dependably destroy Panthers and Tigers, and that includes the demise of Michael Wittman. Regarding the US 76mm vs 17pdr etc... don't know...but the relatively few Fireflies made a big difference in Normandy and beyond. All explained in David Fletchers book. Bit puzzled by lots of comments about the accuracy of the 17 pdr. Every gun would need to have its sights regularly checked, wether it was a 17 pdr or otherwise. Don't recall any mention of inaccuracy is in any of the books I've read by crews who survived the war.

Yeah, a fair while ago. Then they realized the tank is too different to the rest of the line to work well. Not enough glacis and side armour . They also thought its one hell of an iconic tank to slap onto the end of an existing line instead of getting its own, from what I remember. Then David Lister pointed out a few proposed improvements for the Conq that could work, and Wargaming apparently decided to run with it. This was already 3 years ago, mind you. There was recently (month or two) talk its line will split off from the Valentine, and include the Valiant and AT-1(AT-2, but turreted), though that sounds a bit off to me. We'll probably see if that one falls through by the end of the year.

Yeah, compared to to other medium tanks, the Sherman is really tall. The transmission going through the middle had a part for causing that, I believe.
@SquareCanine
@SquareCanine 7 жыл бұрын
Yep. During WWII, the US and Germans favoured putting the transmission and drive wheels at the front while the Russians and Brits put them in the back with the engine. A front drive tank will tend to be a bit taller (to get the turret over the drive shaft), and the turret will be mounted further back vs a rear drive (relative to the hull). Different arrangements also accommodate different armour profiles better (by trying to make best use of the internal volume), and different sizes of components (engines).

I completely agree with you're conclusion. The Firefly had the perfect opportunity to establish a fearsome reputation (partly propaganda, partly sensationalist) because they were available when they were 'needed'. My one question is how long did these stay in service/inventory postwar, I know the Churchill, Cromwell & Achilles had shelf lives into the start of the 1950's but you don't tend to hear anything about what happened to the Firefly??
@DoddyIshamel

The Shermans (whether fireflys or not) were being replaced in British service by Comet and then centurion by the end of the war. Liberated European countries (France, Italy, Belgium, Holland) got many of them while others were acquired on British pull-outs (middle east, India). Many of those Shermans (including fireflies) were sold on to countries in Latin America and Africa in the late 40s/early fifties. A couple of hundred fireflies in Argentina were used as the basis of a new 105mm variant in the 70s. Lebanon still used fireflies in the 80s. The firefly was a stop gap, it was never a practical tank to keep in service once the war was over.
@chazt8604
@chazt8604 7 жыл бұрын
PMGF Under lend lease rules the US equipment that was not destroyed had to be paid for or given back to the US, since the Brits had plenty of Brit built tanks for its post war army (no need to buy spares from the US either) and with the new Centurion entering service which outclassed anything in service - they disposed of the Shermans pretty quickly. Some went to the former occupied nations (Belgium and Holland used tanks from scrap/disposal compounds including Canadian Ram gun tanks) and South America (Argentina recieving numbers of Fireflys for instance).
@1993Crag
@1993Crag 6 жыл бұрын
The idea was that it was a stop gap until things like the Comet/Challenger would come into service. But practically post war the British would just replace all their cruiser tanks with Centurion anyway. The Fireflies were just sold off when newer ones replaced them.

Another great vid! Love the whole series. 2 questions though: 1 I always thought that the inaccuracy of the sabot round was due to problems with sabot separation, solved in part by the later pot sabot. Was the sighting the real problem or did it just compound the issue? 2 It would have been possible to move the elevation handle using some kind of linakge - was this not done as there was no room or was it just that ergonomics was an unknown word in the UK at the time?
@chazt8604
@chazt8604 7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Cox They introduced new sighting gradients on the towed guns (6pdr and 17pdr) later, no idea if they did for the Firefly tank guns. They also introduced more gradients for the later lower velocity HE rounds with the towed guns. The Firefly was originally a stop gap solution but ended up being more successful and much more produced than the official design, the A30 Challenger.

I think it depends on the situation but from what little I have gathered it sounds like bigger tank guns were in high demand. The S tank for example was made when there was a threat of Russian invasion in the cold war and because Russia had more tanks they made the s tank be like a shoot and scoot and ambush tank cuz if they made a traditional tank and fought in the traditional way they would surely lose cuz numbers. So they made a tank with extremely sloped front armour, that had a small front profile and even designed it to dig itself into position. They have a lot of wilderness and places they could ambush from and they made a great ambush style tank. but it's not a good tank for traditional tank fighting because can't traverse turret while on the move and probably slower to get a target but when ambushing and dug in , with it's high firing rate, would be very effective.... hard to take out

If I recall correctly, 76-armed Shermans were in production and even stockpiled in England in time for D-day, but commanders opted to not bring them and only had 75-armed Shermans during the initial phases of the Normandy campaign. I can't remember the reason at the moment, but I think it had something to do with supply line simplification and lack of urgency as they expected few Tigers or Panthers to be about. Wish I could remember my source on that, but alas, I just took a Physics test and my brain no-worky.

I actually believe the allies were quite worried that German high command would send swarms of panthers and tigers to Normandy after the landings. the US considered a heavy tank (the m6) but decided that it would take too long to set up factories to produce them. instead they chose to leave the job of dealing with enemy armour to the bombers/ground attack aircraft.

Jagdpanzer 38(t). "Hetzer" is a term for a related prototype, mistakenly applied to this vehicle.

The real 'Hetzer' was the designation planned for the E-10 light tank destroyer. The Jagdpanzer 38 (t) was never meant to be called that

Excellent summary, the Commonwealth Army knew they need a mobile 17 pounder to take on the heavy German tanks, hence firefly and challenger, they could not afford to wait for Centurion. Another issue was the 76mm in the M10 failed, hence Eisenhower’s memo to ordnance 2 July 44, when he pointed out in tests no American gun in Normandy could punch a hole in the panther whilst the British 6 pounder with APDS could. This got more heated when ordnance stated they had done it, with Eisenhower demanding to know what ammunition was being used followed by his personal letter to General Marshall. Firefly is true to the approach make do and mend, like PIAT, another view take the best chassis the Allies had and install the best gun available at the time, with some seriously good ammunition. Look at the photographs of the Tigers August 8, one has a through and through hole in the turret from the Firefly round.

And don't forget that in those key times in Normandy when the Firefly was available the vast majority of the German armour was facing the British and Canadian sector therefore all the Fireflies were basically in the right place.

no mention of how woefully inaccurate the 17 pounder was? I recall that in post war trials it was basically rated as "unable to hit the broad side of a barn from 10 paces".

I wonder if Germans knew how difficult aiming with Firefly is. One thing is having a powerful gun, another actually hitting anything with it.

I wonder, if the Seventeen Pounder was in the later Sherman turret. Would it limit the impact of the large breech problems?

Apparently it came a cropper of mount problems, the larger turret actually had difficulty with the 75mm due to the shape where the trunnions were.

Wittman’s Tiger at Villars Bocage was knocked out by a firefly in the town after his rampage. It looks like he was killed by a Canadian Sherbrook fusiliers 75mm Sherman while the rest of his squadron of Tigers were killed by Northamptonshire Yeomanry Fireflies.

The ammo restriction and smoke/dust issue along with the longer range better penetration of the 17 lb or seems to me to tank destroyer type role. Fire from ambush shoot and scoot. While you're in cover between positions replenish the five ready rounds. I'm sure in action the luxury of those kind of tactics was not generally available though. So fall back on the British plan for everything, muddle through somehow. 😅

I wonder how much better the 17 pounder would have fit into the T23 76 mm turret,if the T23 turret would have been available at the time when the Firefly was being developed.

Logan Blanton Purely down to how you look at it, some units issued one or two Fireflys/Challengers per troop of three or four medium/cruiser tanks. Other units kept all Firefly/Challengers in a single troop per squadron (a bit like the later Conqueror/Centurion Regts in Germany). So some units kept them as the reserve troop in an advance while others they formed part of the advancing troops along with 75mm armed tanks, this is much the same as the Churchill units in Italy which had a mix of 6pdr and 75mm gunned tanks, depending on what they expected to face - they chose the rounds to be loaded at the startand in which tanks, which tanks to lead with (6pdr with AP leads for instance if tanks expected, 75mm and 6pdr with HE if no armour in the area). They were manned by tankies and were part of tank regts and not by the RA which operated the British SP ATG's during WW2.
