I could very well be wrong, but I'd say the wood in the side bin is to "protect" the bare metal from bending and over the long terme eventually breaking or having holes, the wood will absorb the shocks from inside (like an item moving around inside when the tank is moving)
@aritakalo8011
@aritakalo8011 6 жыл бұрын
Also possibly non conductive lining. However that would mean storing electric gear.... Which is weird for outside storage bin. Maybe spare radio parts.... Since germans put as many radios as they could fit in the tank. Though more likely as you said is, that is is just light weight bulking up material. Main body of the box holding it together is wood and then just outer metal lining for environmental protection. Saves couple kg of the weight limits.

Turns out Krupp where the better tank builders. ;) They had this strange concept of a special hatch to remove the transmission without completely disassembling the tank. This unlike pretty much every other German tank of the era. In general I think the Pz IV was the better overall tank to the point of making the Pz III kinda redundant. Very similar hull size with the Pz IV, same engine, same basic layout but the Pz IV had hatches for every crewmember, transmission and final drives, could mount a bigger gun and the vehicle itself was completed and in production sooner.

I don't know. The panzer 3 with the extra front armor is a pretty good tank. It has way more penetration then the Panzer 4s with howitzers and it has a higher rate of fire then the panzer 4s with anti-tank guns. And several of them got quite good armor for their time with the spaced armor added to them. And the panzer 4s with matching armor are heavy as heck so... Yeah...

@dbenson31 Well there is a reason most nations had 75-76mm as their standard battle tank caliber because its better. Rate of fire would only do so much, keeping in mind tanks fight infantry most of the time having a bit more power for you HE shells is way more important.
@kirotheavenger60
@kirotheavenger60 6 жыл бұрын
It'd better to fire 1 round that kills the enemy (75mm) than 5 rounds that don't penetrate (50mm).
@Luredreier
@Luredreier 6 жыл бұрын
+@@Deathbyreality1 Well, in that case the Panzer 3 L got better front armor then the Panzer 4 F2, a higher rate of fire and it's a smaller target to hit to boot. Later variants of the Panzer 4 like the H model *does* have ok armor, but its horse power to weight ratio isn't as favorable as for the panzer 3 L... So yeah... I don't think that a Panzer 4 regardless of the model can be said to be outright superior to the Panzer 3 lineup. They had different intended purposes. And sure, there's tanks you'll rather face in a Panzer 4 with a long 75 then a Panzer 3. But there's also situations where I'd rather be in a Panzer 3 then a Panzer 4.

One of my favourite tanks! Another very enjoyable and interesting video. Thank you! Love the tank, but what an incredibly inconvenient and difficult set up to replace the transmission. Again makes you realise why Chieftain rates the practical design of the Sherman built to facilitate "easy" and efficient maintenance and repair.

Interesting explanation on fixing the transmission, lift the turret, split the hull by more lifting. So at least a day, no wonder they returned them to the factory to fix. 1939 to December 42 1414 Mark III returned to factories 909 fixed and 111 scrapped. That’s ok when your advancing and you can recover kit. When retreating, you have to leave and abandon. It’s operational madness, having thousands of vehicles in transit between fronts and factories because of complexity of maintenance you can’t fix them any other way. They continued this strategy with more complex equipment against the Allies who were focused on standardisation and cost reduction to improve quality and quantity. How many German tanks did the Allies get due to blown transmissions, loads.

Sasuke Uchiha hi have a look at this the.shadock.free.fr/Surviving_Panzer_III.pdf . The hoods are next to the lights, and have been Riveted to the front hull plate above the transmission. They have a bar attach between them which will support additional track, note photographs. Whether there is an additional purpose I don’t known. Suggest an email to the Tank Museum they will surely help. Also have a look at Panzer III: Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. A to N (Sdkfz 141) (Haynes Manuals) (Owners' Workshop Manual).

@@SasukeUchiha-pv4xnon the front fender? I think is a blackout light, which only casts light directly on the ground in front of the vehicle so they arent as visible from the air in the dark. They were typical on WW2 vehicles, although the Allied ones looked a bit different. Basically a "hooded headlight" but that's not what they are called.
@justforever96
@justforever96 7 ай бұрын
Except they didn't have to return them to her factory to do that. You set up a crane or sheerlegs or just a timber frame and some heavy chain falls in a clearing and you unbolt the top and lift it off and then pull the transmission or engine out. Plenty of photos of them doing this. You needed a crane to remove an M4 Mediums engine or gun as well. Any tank. It's just harder to get to the things on a German tank. They also had divisional and corps and army maintenance depots that were relatively well equipped for repairing and maintaining tanks. The ones that were sent all the way back to the factory were ones that were battle damaged to the point of being impossible to fix in the field (you can't weld a new glacis plate into an otherwise intact hull without factory equipment), or just older (a year at most) tanks that were so worn out that they needed to be totally rebuilt, and usually made more sense to just ship them back and rebuild them to the latest standard anyway. Otherwise you need to send basically a whole tanks with of new parts all the way to the front, as well as all the equipment to install it. And the trains need to go back anyway. It's either that or just abandon them and focus on only building brand new vehicles. Which doesn't make any sense when you are going to send them back as scrap anyway since 20 tons of high grade steel isn't just something to throw away. Tanks wear out very quickly in combat, and they need to be rebuilt. They also need frequent and extensive maintenance, there is no way they could possibly sustain the war if they had to return them to the factory every time they needed an engine overhaul or a new gun tube. That said, the amazingly easy to repair M4 Medium? The M4A4 with the multi bank engine, it required you to pull the entire 6,000lb engine out every time you wanted to change spark plugs or adjust the carburetors. Yet the British used thousands of them. Didn't need to return them to the factory every time either. Which is good since that was on the other side of the Atlantic.

Agree on the Panzer 3. The Panzer 4, not so much. It only became the German mainstay tank because putting a long 75mm gun in it was the fastest way for the Wehrmacht to get a tank that could reliably kill the T-34 and the KV-1. It was slower, less armoured and less mass-produceable than comparable competing tanks like the T-34 and the Sherman.

@@sirboomsalot4902 The Panzer III also wasn't the mid to late war workhorse of the Wehrmacht like the long-barreled Panzer IV was. The radials used in U.S. armor did not need to be turned over by hand before every start, just if the engine had sat idle for over say, a couple of hours in colder weather. The handful of WW2 era armor I dealt with in the southwest, you only hand-cranked if it'd sat overnight/all day without running. It also depended a lot on the starter itself. The J&H on the 975's had a clutch pack in them to keep from (possibly) damaging the engine in the case of a hydrolock. The Kaufmann cartridge units used in some M3 lights could bend things.

uhhhh, are those side escape hatches for the resident mice living inside the tank? No one can get through one of those!! I can see why they were outmoded.

How is that a hull escape hatch? Looks insanely tiny, does not look like it would pass the: oh bugger the tank is on fire, test.

It is for crew morale.... There is an escape hatch. Sir, can we train using it? No, only for emergency (shieze, if they try training escaping through it the notice they wont fit)

The 10 degree slope has always seemed like a bad idea to me, that it might actually have less effective angling than a vertical plate because of the ballistic arc of the incoming projectile, or at least be reduced to such small angle as to be irrelevant and you might as well have just let the factory cut right angles.
@Panzermeister36

Better to have the stronger front hull plate angled back to meet the shell perpendicular, than to have the shell ricochet downwards off a vertical plate and into the weaker hull top armour....

I wanna see m4 105mm video. I always wonder how they fit 105mm into m4 Sherman.
@shocktrooper2622
@shocktrooper2622 6 жыл бұрын
They removed the gyro and electric traverse for the turret and put the 105mm into the tank. In 1945 they put the T23 turret on the M4A3(105) and got back the powered traverse, but by then the 105 was heading to the Pacific for OP Downfall

I have an only slightly related question: Could you, in some video, talk about WW2 tank ordnance? In particular, Why was the German long 75mm tank gun so good while the American 76mm was just okay? And why did that 76mm have what I've heard was a second rate HE shell? For that matter, it seems like neither the Soviet 85mm or the American 90mm was the equal of the German 88mm. People are always talking about U.S.A. tank doctrine and the problems with USN submarine torpedoes, but it seems like the US Army Bureau of Ordnance also has a lot to answer for.

Off subject follow up Q......Did you get an informed answer on the "chute" design on the turret of the A/C I Sentinel? Toss it in as a bonus in an upcoming Hatch video, plz.
@TheChieftainsHatch
@TheChieftainsHatch 6 жыл бұрын
I did not get anything confirmed. Cooling was the best option I've heard so far, but it requires that the chute be open on the 'wall' side, and I haven't been in the tank since to confirm it.

Unsure. Haven't found one yet I can do. The Bovington one is converted to a range target vehicle, the one in Borden is a wreck. I doubt the one in Vancouver's in good condition, that only leaves Ottawa, I think, which I have not yet looked inside.
