I think you've got "Reformation" mixed up with "Renaissance". The Popes were huge consumers of Renaissance art and kept the major artists of the time fully employed, often competing with one another. The Northern European struggle against the Church has nothing to do with the Renaissance artistically. The Church did suppress scientific exploration for sure.
