Wow, that was a toughie. 'Tatterdemalion' is new to me, but it's a word now fixed firmly in my lexicon, ready to use when I next get the opportunity. A fine solve as always.

Some words in this that I just didn't know, and couldn't have easily got to from the wordplay, and, perhaps most embarrassingly, not mentioned in your list of potentially awkward words! (Edited to add): the tributary is the River Soar, of course Once again some grand work in the solve.

Excellent. I know Thurso has the northernmost train station in Great Britain but looks like it's the northernmost town too.

I suppose in mainland UK, not including Orkney and Shetland?

It depends on how you define Britain as to whether it's just the large island or also includes some smaller islands.

Tatterdemalion...even knowing it was anagram, I could have looked for a week and never got that. Thats why I could never take on the Times crossword, too many words I simply do not know.
