I also have a soft spot for Aunt Ruby’s German Green. I grew up hating tomatoes because I had only ever tried the sour, mushy grocery store varieties. One week at my farmers market one stand had their adorable little boy handing out tomato samples. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I didn’t like tomatoes so I took a slice. It happened to be Aunt Ruby‘s German Green. Thus began my obsessive love of heirloom tomatoes. I now grow 25 varieties (40 plants) for just me...and some friends and family on occasion 😂

I always start my nasturtiums in the greenhouse now and they transplant well, no problem. Never had any luck with direct snow either. Also, nicking the hard shell and soaking them overnight first is a huge help. Everything looks amazing in your greenhouse! Alot of work went into all those starts.

Charity Smith Do you recommend nicking of Kentucky Wonder Green Bean then soaking before planting??? I’m trying seeding really for the first time this year I’ve never had luck with transplanting the green bean from pot to the garden!! So I’m gonna direct sown them this year... Thx for any advice I’m concerned as I want them to come up this year !! I’m learning so Much in this community.. My first year seeding so much except the beans I tried last year didn’t work Stores Don’t sell green beans already potted at all!! The Internet is so confusing!! This companion stuff got me all Messed up to LOL 😂 God Bless Thx for all your help, your for your time Shey
@charitysmith52455 жыл бұрын
@@Sheywh12 you could soak them overnight but I dont think I'd nick them. Green beans will come up easily and fast when directly sown. I'm thinking they dont sell starts because they're so easy and people usually plant several rows of them and are less likely to buy starts of something they are growing alot of. It would be expensive.

Thank you for taking the time to give us a tour of your greenhouse. As far as the cats, what if you added screen doors to the greenhouse? 1x1's and rolled screening might keep the kitties out. Or maybe add a couple cat beds, so they don't lay on your plants. I hope this helps. ❤

We started nasturtiums in our garden for the first time this year. I live in North Central Florida. Mid winter we started Baker Creek nasturtiums seeds in our greenhouse. The have since been transplanted to our garden. They are now full of blooms and very healthily. I did plant them in an area where the soil is not as rich as other parts of the garden.

We got about 4” of snow last night here in eastern CT. To cheer myself up I decided to drive out to Comstock & Ferre in Old Wethersfield. They were bought by Baker Creek a few years back. I came home with some golden lemon balm, calendula, zinnias, banana peppers, and yes, three more tomato varieties! Black Beauty, Brad’s Atomic Grape, and Galaxy. I already have yellow pear, ox hearts, brandywine and Dancing with Smurfs . Did I mention I only have six 4x4 raised beds for a garden?? Lots of containers will be necessary!

Have you considered making/buying a pair of screen doors for your greenhouse? If you wanted, you could use a larger mesh so the insects could go through it. My previous home had a whole house fan in our garage so we canned out there. We simply stuck a plain screen door into the walk through door way frame. It worked great!

I have a kitty in my plants problem as well. The solution I've found is placing sticks upright in the soil at the time of planting. Keeps kitties out and once the plants are bigger I can pull them out. You have to experiment with how many sticks/ how close together, depends on the determination of your cat. :)

Hi, love the greenhouse tour, you spoke about Nasturtium, the trick is sweep the paths, clean the potting table and all the sad dusty stuff pot up and wait till you have a full pot then plant your Nasturtium in the pot , sounds daft but I get the best ones that way. And yes great companion plants they get attacked by the pests and the other plants are left alone, mostly.

The first year I planted tomatoes on my KY farm(zone 7b) I was at the mercy of madding hordes of horn worms. The next year i alternated the tomatoes with marigolds, and curly parsley (great food for Monarch larvae). I was astounded by the result, nearly 80% reduction of these voracious beasties. This worked so well for me (and my nerves, lol) Blessings to all of you, all year long!

Hey Jess! I bought nasturtiums for the first time one year from a greenhouse nursery and transplanted them with great success. I tried direct seeding and not much luck. I started mine indoors last year and found that they do best transplanting them when they are about 6" tall. A few of them were much bigger and didn't do as well. Also, try planting some nasturtiums with your squash plants. They are a great companion plant and I've had most my luck of growing them only near squash. They don't do very well anywhere else in my garden!

I ordered those bootstrap farmer trays and seedling containers because of your recommendations and I love them. The trays are awesome and plan on ordering more. I also already started using those white seedling bags. I find that they provide air flow to the roots, but on the bottom get little airflow and have had fungus. The tops tend to dry out more quikly. I really like them, I just need to experiment to figure it out. Thanks for sharing your tour!

I finally received my bootstrap farmer trays and they are so much sturdier than what I purchased last year. Also, my see through bin "green house" with a bag of compost under it is giving me three different kinds of spinach. :) Something I learned from Farmer Brown's Paradise and use for every repotting is water soluble mycchorize (sp?). I attribute my success last year of late seed starting to that and Neptunes fertilizer.
