I don’t recall a Chinatown during the 1960s. Mostly farmers then. I went to St Joseph’s and we owned the only Chinese restaurant called Canton Restaurant. We emigrated to Canada in 1970. Looking forward to your video!!

😅😅😅😅 1940 building in the city today! Most Indians built the buildings in 1950 onwards and those which stand today they're written in big numbers. eg 1958. You probably don't know why Indians built so much at this period. What you saw on this video is simply one or two streets. There are hundreds of such streets with modern buildings coming up and owned by young Tanzanians. In fact a friend of mine has a 14 storey building at city centre and he is much younger than me.

Take note Mr.. The British colonial administration created 3 classes of citizens. Europians Indians Africans. The Europians ran the civil administration and some were settler farmers The Indians railway builders were facilitated by loans to start business in urban centres The African were made to work for the Europians and Indians. So to say Indians are better in business is just wrong and a misnomer. Go to Moshi, Arusha, Mbeya, Iringa Mwanza and other towns. Indian bissinessmen are very few . Check for yourself even in Dar particularly Kariakoo . Gone are the Indian Dukawallas. Study more for yourself.

Indigenous Tanzanians have been disadvantaged because they did not & I believe, they still don't have a legacy of entrepreneurial culture, simply because their parents didn't own or manage their own businesses... Tanzanian- Indians, on the other hand, have had many centuries of natural entrepreneurial skills & culture & hence, business start up & risk- taking comes naturally to them....that's why , Indians in Tanzania ( & elsewhere globally ) are successful & their children learn entrepreneurial skills from their father & carry on & grow their business & commerce in Tanzania However, as an Indian, ( settled in UK ) , I believe, Tanzanian Indians who are successful in business, have a moral duty & responsibility to encourage,, guide, advice & support young Tanzanian- Africans to develop entrepreneurial culture to set up their own businesses... It is also in the long term interest of Tanzanian- Indians to encourage & support Tanzanian African s in entrepreneurial development.....this is the way to prosperity of millions of Indigenous Tanzanians which will also benefit local Indian businesses , because the latter in future, will become the supply sources for the growing native Tanzanian owned businesses . The Tanzanian govt also has a vital duty to develop suitable training courses ( with guidance from Indian & Western consultants with expertise in entrepreneurship ) to provide pre- startup practical knowledge & skills for developing business ideas, & research & implementation of such ideas including skills required for practical day- to operational aspects of running small businesses in manufacturing, trading, import- export, agri- farming & distribution etc. Tanzanian govt should also set up Small Business Advice centres across Tanzania . Such centres can dispense guidance, support & advices to African owned businesses to overcome obstacles in their venturs & grow their businesses & thus employ more Africans in their businesses. Such Business Advice Centres for small start up businesses have been in existence in all Western countries, India, South East Asia for many years. And their contribution in the creation of millions of small start ups & jobs & wealth creation has been very substantial over the years... During British colonial rule of East Africa, many thousands of Indians were brought from India to build railways in East Africa during the late 19th century...After these railways were completed, the British encouraged the Indians to stay in East Africa & set up their own businesses ( dukas ) in the interior of these territories. With their natural entrepreneurial skills & risk- taking ability, these Indians ( ex railway builders ) soon set up retail & wholesale shops to supply the basic needs of Indigenous East Africans in the rural heartlands ( eg cooking oil, maize, cassava, beans, kerosene, salt, sugar, textile fabric/khanga etc ) The Africans , in turn, were encouraged by the rural Indian traders & retail shops to grow & supply various agri- produce such as rice ( paddy ), sisal, sunflower, pulses, maize, coffee, cotton etc..in this way, East Africa's rural SUBSISTENCE ECONOMY was transformed into a CASH ECONOMY with the key Indian rural traders acting as middlemen in distributing agri produce across East Africa & for exports to the West. During the 1920s- 30s , some of these Indian shopkeepers set up their own factories to process agri- produce, cotton ginneries, sisal processing & export, sugar, wheat & maize flour milling etc. That was the beginning of the economic development of East Africa...These family- owned Indian businesses had a strong ethos of FAMILY UNITY, good education for their children & each family member contributing towards the growth & success of their enterprise. A strong network was also built by them with other Indian businesses across East Africa for the purchase & sale of their goods & other inputs. Unfortunately, the British colonial rulers of East Africa did not invest in providing education at secondary & higher levels to Indigenous Africans of these territories... Thus, the Africans remained mostly unskilled or, at best semi- skilled....thereby, depriving them of skilled jobs in the colonial civil service or in the private sector businesses & professions . Sadly, other colonial rulers such as the French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc were no better...they also neglected the education of their colonial subjects in Asia, Africa, Sth America etc... i guess,for the colonial rulers, it was & still is, a slow evolutionary process of learning ethical & moral values re: their duty to their colonial subjects God bless Tanzania.
