Sadly, the TWISTEX team was in a scenario where they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, chasing in an unmodified Chevy Cobalt holding probes in the trunk weighs the vehicle down even more than usual, had they turned north on HWY 81 they would have avoided impact, Carl Young was handling directions for the Samaras vehicle, there's a brief pause where they are deciding whether or not to head East, final decision was to head East: the TWISTEX team was only several seconds behind Dan (more-so few hundred yards behind) when the outer circulation of the tornado hit both vehicles, reportedly Dan had the accelerator floored according to Skip Talbot however he was only going 40 MPH and traction control made his case worse. the Samaras vehicle was going about the same speed as Dan. At 6:21 PM a large barrel shaped sub-vortex is heading for the Samaras vehicle as the main tornadic circulation entirely consumes both vehicles shown on Dan's rear-view camera as the TWISTEX team starts falling further behind. At 6:22:15 PM TWISTEX is impacted by the large barrel shaped sub-vortex as it stayed on their vehicle for about 20 seconds as their vehicle is thrown and rolled several times before the sub-vortex deposits the vehicle only 20 seconds later, this is the last time their headlights were seen on Dan's rear-view camera. The sub-vortex that impacted TWISTEX was the strongest sub-vortex that was recorded in the tornado by RaXPol exceeding winds of 295 MPH and estimates placing it at over 300. Dan Robinson was only ~300 yards away from death. If TWISTEX had used their other vehicle which was a GMC Truck known as the Twistex Probe Vehicle that was optimized for hail protection and stability in high winds, could they have survived? It's really hard to say. There are many factors that go into that especially when you have a large barrel shaped sub-vortex heading straight for you while trying to escape 100+ MPH winds with rocks and pebbles constantly impacting your vehicle. Reportedly on that day, the Twistex Probe Vehicle was on maintenance for repairs, so they used their unmodified Chevy Cobalt it was also much more fuel efficient. May the lives impacted on that day Rest in Peace.

That pickup is going to have the torque to pull through those headwinds better. I've encountered Tx Panhandle 70 mph wind gusts that slowed my Plymouth Valiant slant six down to 25 mph where I had to go to 2nd gear to go at all. You'd better be staying off the counter-clockwise side of a tornado if you're driving anything without the proverbial "juice" to pull you out of it. RIP

I definitely am! That was Dominator 2 he was driving. He helped rescue the Bettes crew. “On May 31, 2013, Dominator 2 was damaged when it intercepted a record breaking multiple-vortex tornado near El Reno. According to KFOR-TV, posts by Reed on Facebook, and as shown in Season 2, episodes 11 and 12 of Tornado Chasers, the hood was ripped off of the vehicle when the Dominator 2 collided with a downed power line. The tornado would go on to be 2.6 miles (4.2 km) wide with winds measured by radar exceeding 290 mph (470 km/h) (at about 100 m (330 ft) above the surface), making this the largest and strongest tornado ever intercepted by any of the Dominator vehicles. During the chase, Reed and his team found the wrecked SUV of Mike Bettes and his team from The Weather Channel's Great Tornado Hunt after it had been rolled into a field by a sub-vortex from the main tornado. Joined by members from Oklahoma City's KFOR-TV Channel 4 storm chasing team and first responders like the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Bettes and his crew were rescued and evacuated to receive medical attention. Reed later learned that TWISTEX founder Tim Samaras, his son Paul, and storm chasing partner Carl Young, were fatalities of the El Reno tornado.” RIP TwistX team. 😢

As the tornado was expanding tfrom 1 mile wide to 2 miles wide, and it was traveling at a certain speed. How much faster was that growing radius ahead of the tornado that was unpredictable. It looked to ne growing fast, and it was a tornado that was much much larger than the average tornado most people are used to. I think chasers got too close because its rare for a tornado to get this large. But i hope and pray that chasers still remember this horrible day, and always remember, that unpredictable things are always on the table, always have another plan that is centered on safety

I believe the factors that lead to the Twistex tragedy was the tornado expanded and made a left turn and the vechile they were using was a white Chevy cobalt which I believe was underpowered which hampered their escape in the strong 110 mile per hour inflow winds. Very sad RIP Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras, and Carl Young.

I heard how the subvortex got them was it swung northeast at like 80 miles per hour with winds up to 300 miles per hour and got the Twistex Chevy cobalt. I believe then what I am speculating is it ejected Carl and Paul out of the vehicle and then lofted the vechile into a field south and the flung it east then north east the car hurdled plunged and rolled at 60 miles per hour before coming to a rest at a canoa path a 0.5 mile away. That’s where Tim was found in the car with his seatbelt still on. They stood no chance at survival. RIP Tim, Paul, and Carl.

@@Kyautumnlovr Chasing tornado's for actual science. Not for clicks like these dopes today. Tim was improving the understanding of tornados through invention and working directly in the field of study. Which ultimately risked and eventually cost him his and 2 other lives. He was out to improve understanding and forecasting of tornados and the storms that produce them. Invented turtles and different types of cameras. Was a great guy. Twistex was a good team. This tornado was different. As the video states, the El-Reno tornado didnt behave like typical or even atypical tornados behave. It had a mind of its own, was hard to see at some points, and was multi-vortex not to mention moving fast and rain wrapped. A satellite vortex is what eventually caught up to the Twistex vehicle. Rotating well and far outside of the main core or main vortex. It literally reached out and snatched their car off the dirt road hurtling it over a quarter mile. One of them I believe was sucked out of the car and deposited in a nearby stream near a bridge. The Twistex Memorial sits where the car eventually landed and stopped rolling. I think it definitely lifted them well into the air. The part that probably killed then came after when the car came back down and impacted the earth. A very freak accident of unimaginable terror. This is the stuff of nightmares and was not the intention. Tim Samaras was no Stockton Rush. He was well planned and researched. This tornado was a total freak. Legacy lives on..

He is right, Tim was taken out by the greatest storm ever chased. This wouldn't have ever happened with your average tornado. This one was truly a terrifying monster. And he just wanted to get data that could teach us more about them and keep us all safer. And in a way, this one has done that, and has been one of the most researched storms ever because it just doesn't make sense compared to what we knew. How could this happen, will be the question forever. And i believe it will make everyone safer, like Time always wanted. Its just not fair he and his son and friend was taken away like this to better humanity's safety.

It's too bad that we have so many reckless idiots in the chaser community today that have taken absolutely nothing from the lessons that the El Reno 2013 storm taught us. Twistex were not amateurs, they were experts, and yet they were caught by this monster. Despite that, too many chasers are getting insanely close to tornadoes today just for some social media footage, even tornadoes that somewhat resemble the El Reno in its multi-vortex form. It is only a matter of time before we have another storm chaser death because people keep behaving like they're on god mode in a video game.

Let's be honest, if you choose to chase tornadoes in a Chevy Cobalt, you're taking a massive chance with your life. Tim never should have gotten as close as he did with that vehicle. A very tragic mistake indeed. I refuse to chase in anything that underpowered.
@jamesclarke279
@jamesclarke279 3 ай бұрын
@lray801 A few things I'll always question is why didn't they turn north onto highway 81, instead of continuing east on Reuter Rd, or why didn't they turn around at the highway and go back west. Tim chased in a Cobalt because it was cheaper on gas. Three grown men, 3 45 pound turtle probes and a 4 cylinder car with no good horse power was the problem. He knew they were in a bad spot when there was no rain and at that point, it was too late. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

North radar showed really bad hail conditions. East looked clear. The biggest problem was this tornado is that chasers didn't realize how big it was and how fast it could shift. The Twistex didn't anticipate smaller vortices popping up either, which is what killed them

IF this is what these chasers CHOOSE to do - well then - let them ..without judgement. Big car, little car, fast car, slow car....it wouldn't have made a difference. They made a mistake and misjudged how much time they had and how big it was....many of them did. I hope they are somewhere free from pain - knowing that they contributed to science and helped advance our understanding of these horrific storms. Thank you NG for posting this. This season has been crazy. Here in Iowa we've had over 100 tornados this spring and those chasers and meteorologists gave us all the warning we needed to keep safe. RIP to all of my Iowa friends and neighbors who lost their lives.

38:38; based on the location of the pickup and the fact that it appears to be on the edge of a river or small body of water (refer to William Reid's storm bruiser page about this event), this is most certainly amateur storm chaser 35-year-old Richard Charles Henderson's (from Hinton) Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab pickup. This footage lines up with Reid's photos of the same pickup. I am so curious to know who's footage this is.

@jadefox5285 I don't recall the directional speed of the sub-vortexes having been noted, just the directional speed of the supercell being 40 mph and increasing to 60 mph as it veered northeast and expanded. Watching the video again I heard one commercial radar operator cite wind speeds of 250 mph up to 300 mph pertaining to the subvortexes in general. Then someone citing apparently figures taken from the specific vortex that hit both the News Team and the Twistex cars of 175 mph to over 200 mph. (I already forgot exactly what that top wind speed was. Sometimes when you get old the lights are on but nobody is home, lol) What I was wondering was if some of the sub vortexs were anticyclonic, iow clockwise rotating and if that were what made it veer off the normal direction. I'm assuming that some of the cyclonic vortexs merged to get it to expand so quickly but I noted that it simultaneously changed directionally pretty much to a normal course so that 's what made me curious about how subvortexes might affect direction particularly anticyclonic spin-offs. Wonder if the radar can discern that sort of thing.

I think this tornado shocked every storm chaser on earth. And made them really rethink safety and the very real risk of your life when you do this. Storm chasing is important and necessary to all of us, we need eyes on the ground to confirm locations and intensity. I think a lot of storm Chasers got too comfortable on the worst possible day with a powerful deadly unpredictable mixture . I still can't believe this happened. These are the best of the best out here, and somehow this tornado was different and unpredictable. It didn't do what they normally do. I think every storm chaser needs to really invest in a fast powerful vehicle, supercharged or turbo V8 or turbo diesel. You're life depends on your ability to leave fast.

I watched the video of those local guys that stopped to pick up the weather channel guys that got rolled and took them to the hospital. They had been chasing without radar software so they were following an ambulance who did have the software. When the thing turned north the ambulance turned around and bugged out and so did they as they were already north of it and behind it. They actually stopped while the rain was hiding the vortexs which I could discern before they noticed them. The video stopped there but I guess they eventually turned back and chased it to Highway 81 where they saw the weather Channel car and stopped to help. They didn't have the good shots of the vortexs so their video didn't show up in any of the playlists and I don't remember the title of their half hour or so video. But it's a good example of being too close to a rain wrapped tornado without realizing it. Luckily it was the back of it as it was moving away but noticing those vortex through the wall of rain only about a couple hundred yards away or so was chilling. Wish I could remember the title.
