It's a legit question because everybody saw the play and that's the first thought that comes to mind, "why didn't you shoot being 6'10" right underneath the goal?" Many reporters will use a chance like that to insert a personal slight. But if it's a 6 foot guard that passes up a shot like that, you can give them the benefit of the doubt of thinking it might get blocked. This is different. He's gotten so worried about shooting even that close that he won't because he's so worried about getting fouled. If he could learn to make free throws that would do more to help the team than getting the outside shot first. He needs both desperately, but the quickest way to help is to get his free throws working.

I'm not a Simmons apologist but he doesn't need a jump shot. I mean don't get me wrong he cannot be a SUPERSTAR without one but Ben Simmons has the talent to average 22/10/10. Even without a jumpshot 18/8/8 is very much doable. However he NEEDS to improve his free throws. He NEEDS to become aggressive with the ball and stop being scared. He is a liability on offense right now and no amount of defense can fix that. As long as he can't shoot free throws, he can't get to the rim without being scared of fouls and he can't even handle the ball in clutch situations, making him completely useless

Never understood while players think you have to stand directly in front of the goal and toe on the line when shooting a free-throw. You can stand anywhere in that arc, in the corner of the line, 2ft behind the line...etc. Standing in front can throw off your depth perception. If you took a slight step to the left or right, you can see the angle and see the rim more in a 3D view. In High School I noticed my shots from the line were drifting to the left a little because of my release point. I took a slight step to the right and starting making more of them....finished the season shooting 87% from the line. 😁

The first time I saw him was as a sophomore in high school and he took perimeter jumpers. I can’t recall if he was making them, but he took them. He played off the ball, D’Angelo Russell was the point guard and that’s where needs to be, back at forward. He can still facilitate some, but he can’t be a guard playing out on the perimeter until he starts shooting.
