The cashierless concept of Amazon Go was introduced in 2018, now they are tripling it in size to create a one stop shop to get all of your groceries. I went to check it out, and see if it really works- I can't believe they actually charged me for something I didn't take! Sorry Amazon for breaking your store.

How it works:
Amazon Go has several hundred (maybe more? not sure?) sensors on the ceiling tracking your every move. If you pick up an item, it's in your virtual cart. If you put it back- you won't be charged (or shouldn't be). After getting all of your groceries, you simple walk out of the store!

Life in the Crow's Nest I mean that would just be the equivalent of people shoplifting at traditional grocery stores. Yeah, it’s easy enough to do, but a majority of people are going to be decent enough not to, and the business kind of plans for a certain degree of product loss through damage and theft. I would also assume they have a way to cross-reference before issuing a requested refund if needed.

However, probably Amazon most likely errs on the side of "customer service" and probably gives the customer the benefit of the doubt unless some pattern that emerges that suggests suspicious behavior.

I always have a love/ hate feeling with ideas like these where its obvious that lower income/ skilled workers and their families will be mostly effected with operations like this popping up.. 😕 We've yet to study how stuff like this will effect the economy in the next 5-10 years

Skilled? Lol being a cashier isn't that hard. I was one and the hardest thing was dealing with rude unnecessary racist customers. And I find that many cashiers fuck up a bunch so that I constantly have to check my receipt. Even had people mess up a second and third time when I brought the receipt back to the store. I wish more cashierless stores would pop up.

I like the concept of these Amazon Go stores. It takes away the anxiety of having to rush to stick your cash/card into your wallet/pocket so the next person can checkout at cash register. I also like that there's ONLY groceries and not merch/other stuff bc i always walk into a store to buy ONE thing and walk out with 10 😂

In reality this is a trend that has been going on for more than 10 years. Home Depot, Walmart and many other retailers have had self-check out for that long. In this version you are doing the physical scanning of items, in essence, eliminating the need for check out personel. One employee can oversee 10 to 12 self check out stations.

That’s exactly it. With small businesses that join their ‘fulfilled by amazon’ delivery service, they essentially have the rights to steal your idea, poach your manufacturer and start making copies to sell more cheaply - it appears on Amazon Basics. The algorithm hides the original private seller and pronto, they’re out of business. They are a disgusting amoral monopoly. Any deal w/ Amazon is a deal to screw yourself over, Whole Foods should never have signed.

Working in restaurant, I can tell you that fresh meets are what can brake or make the food cost. The risk of loss is way higher, which I believe explains why they vacuum seal it and price it above average to cover the risk of loss. Especially if it's a "convenience" type store. They don't expect you to rely on them for your fresh meets.

It was pretty cool. Went to one in SF before going to see a movie. I didn’t know how it actually worked. The very nice Amazon worker showed my how to get the code. The store was a small one with various snacks, drinks and some packaged to go sandwiches ect. You grab a nice Amazon bag, put stuff in and walk out. Somehow they know exactly what you bought. No self scanning ect. It gets charged to your Amazon account. You will get a detailed receipt thru email. It was kinda fun
