All of them.

None of them until *all* vestiges of the old Soviet system & KGB are gone. It's not safe until then. So the question is, is Putin that last vestige, or will someone follow him who also remembers and foolishly reveres that system?

Tsar Nicholas II & Tsarina Alexandra lived mostly at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo but their living quarters there weren't as opulent as the other Romanov palaces. It was because of Tsarina Alexandra's simple taste for decorating & furnishing their rooms the English way as she saw it. Some of the furniture came from Maple & Co the English company.

I am lucky enough to have visited them all. Each is special but Peterhof is probably my favourite.

I was in the Summer Palace and the Winter Palace in about 1983. The Winter Palace is my favourite. It is just so spectacular. My friends and I had visited Versailles not too long before that and even Versailles doesn't prepare you for the grandeur of the Romanov places. I'm not saying that I am supportive of wealthy royalty or anything like that. I'm a socialist by nature but the buildings are a part of mankind's heritage and we can all enjoy them now.

I liked The Winter Palace the best! Its size and Grandeur are just so unbelievably unique! The Winter Palace stands as the crowning achievement! Spanning 233,345 square meters with 1,500 rooms along the Neva River in St. Petersburg, featuring 1,886 doors, 1,945 windows, and an intricate baroque facade stretching 215 meters. Just so Stunning! 😱

This is the trip of my dreams! I’ve dreamt about going to St. Petersburg since I was a little girl….one of these days I’ll be able to go.

I loved our two trips to St Petersburg’s , it’s a fascinating city and easy to walk around , we were lucky and had glorious weather . The Winter Palace / The Hermitage Museum is amazing . Catherine Palace is also a favourite , gardens and Amber room but I think my favourite has to be Peterhof and that fountain and an amazing engineering feat in those days . We did the tour of the fountains engineering which was fascinating and with a surprise as you go outside in the fountain . No didn’t get wet . It has so much history and is wonderful to walk around . Hope one day the city will be open to worldwide visitors again . I agree with the comment below Versailles is not a patch on St Petersburg Palaces , the hall of mirrors was very disappointing .

Most of the palaces in Imperial Russia were designed by Italian or Swiss Italian architects. They used the baroque and rococo styles - the baroque style originated in 16th-17th century Rome and spread to most of Europe.It explains why the palaces are so vibrant and colorful.
@LUIS-ox1bv13 күн бұрын
Roccoco, originated in France, not Italy.
@kaloarepo28813 күн бұрын
@@LUIS-ox1bv Technically correct but the whole thing (baroque) was invented in Italy with the Jesuit churches in Rome like "Il Gesu" -spread to France particularly with the great baroque artist Bernini (he did the huge colonnade in front of St Peter's, Rome).Rococo was an extension of this. The key architect of baroque/rococo was Rastrelli who did so many of the great palaces in Russia and also churches and convents like the Smolny convent. Quarenghi was another great architect and I think he was Swiss-Italian (Ticino canton) Come to think of it even the Kremlin in Moscow was designed by an Italian architect but several centuries before the baroque era of course. At this time Italian composers also flocked to Russia and introduced opera etcetera to Russia -one great Venetian composer Galuppi even attempted to blend Italian baroque music with traditional Russian Orthodox church music. Paisiello was Catherine the Great's official composer -a Neapolitan who later wrote the music for Napoleon's coronation.

The Winter Palace and the Hermitage would be the top of my list for a visit. The others mentioned here would each be interesting to see. My question is: If all these grand palaces are each so close together, why did all these different Royals feel the need to build a home so equally grand?

I had an opportunity to visit St. Petersburg as well as Moscow and Novgorod in 2018. I had been aware of the palaces through an art Exhibition in Jackson, Mississippi. I had limited time but did visit the Winter Palace and the Catherine Palace which was my favorite. It has fewer visitors which made a huge difference. The Hermitage Museum was overrun by so many people it ruined the experience. I planned to go back to visit Peterhof but 2022 happened and I will never get to experience it. Had a wonderful trip and met lots of lovely people.

I'm very curious about the reconstruction of the amber room. Did they use the old black & white photos to guide them as to distribution of lightter vs darker pieces, and any patterns that had been in it? If so, that must have been difficult, although perhaps they had papers referencing the original installation in either country. Also, I think many believe it tobe destroyed, but could any of it have survived? Are there no records of who the last people in the German storage room were? One of the things that surprised me about Nicholas, was that he often actually had good instincts, but would let himself be talked out of his better judgement by relatives & courtiers who always insisted on a clear division between nobility and everyone else, and were afraid of a lessening of ytheir own positions. If Nicholas had insisted on his way, rather than second guessing himself at their bidding, they'd likely still be around as a family, if nothing else, instead of wiped out.

Not only black-and-white photographs of the Amber Room have been preserved, but also colored photographs. Based on these photos, restorers were able to restore the room.

We have to Appreciate each palace for their individuality and opulence. They were different times when opulence rained supreme.I still am floored by the Amber room my gosh it's beautiful and makes one wonder wjere in the world a whole room of amber could be hiding. That is something that I wish that they could find even if only a piece of the room. That can't be an easy thing to hide but I am afraid that's one thing that they will never find.
