Shopping giant Amazon has opened its first physical store outside the US, in Ealing, west London.
The till-less supermarket uses cameras to track customers as they shop. The items they pick up and leave the store with are then automatically charged to their Amazon account.
Tom Richell went to try it out.

The idea isn't bad at all, it's just that I don't want to support Amazon furthermore. I mean it's a multi-millionaire company. They don't need our money for GROCERIES more than the small local businesses.

I was in the Canary Wharf store yesterday. It felt weird to be able to just take something of a shelf and put it into my backpack. I thought that the shelves themselves had weight sensors. And perhaps they still do. But I didn’t realize I was being tracked by cameras. I wonder if that’s all automated or if there is an actual person who keeps track of what I’m buying. The argument that “a few more cameras don’t matter” is not a very good one though. I mean, yes, it’s true, but at the same time, the current state should not be an argument. Instead we should think about what this kind of tracking actually means.

this is unlikely. amazon has no incentive to restrict trade and deny themselves profits. the government also are not allowed to impose restrictions on who can and cannot enter private stores. you can visit china if you want that level of authority. please don't freak out and react negatively to this product. if you don't like it, for whatever reason, then take your business elsewhere, but don't spew nonsense political bullshit about totalitarianism and social credit. you're pathetic.

So this is the future? COVID 19 has reduced human interaction, these shops will do the same. Human interaction is important, without it we become less than human. Imagine if all shops went this way, less jobs, less small businesses. Humans will be reduced to zombies staring at screens (well we are half way there already), and lastly, why is everyone in such a rush, we all need to slow down, life is short.

Well... you'll still be able to interact with people, be friendlier to people talk to them properly for once you CAN interact with people, but most likely Cashiers will be replaced with people who will bag your Groceries for you and from what i've read they'll need people to keep the Robots working that they'll use to sort groceries that sounds like a Click & Collect Service, also to Pick more fragile items cos the robots will drop the items into crates, so they can't and never will be able to entirely replace humans we'll always be needed to do something. Thinking about it... since they want to keep the social distancing going a little bit (which is definitely valid especially in future pandemics and helping to keep things a whole lot cleaner), but i don't think they'll want everyone standing around bagging their items from trollies so they'd have to bag items and they'd still need people to help the elderly bag their stuff or load them into their cars, so no... it won't be like you think there will still need to be people there. You have the right idea about smaller businesses though but that happening also means they can give that land back to nature to plant grass, trees and plants there and they intend to do this cos of The Environmental Damage, farms are also going to be replaced with Aeroponics at least... half of them at first and i think this is why they're trying to shove Indian Farmers off their farms into Factories, they did it too quickly though just like they already switched to Digital Money, but to build those farms they destroyed nature even burned them down to do it and they did it more and more... to keep up with the demand for meat until it was too much land, cows also produce methane which is worse than Carbon Dioxide. There's just so so much more going on here than who gets to talk to who and how people pay for things.

You said less jobs thats wrong, HCI (Human computer interaction) used in self service will create new jobs/less work. The thing is that yes it will be a problem if all stores do thst but 1. They won't yet 2. Slowing implementing it will be good just doing it fast might be bad.

The technology is a blueprint for the biometric surveillance we will all be subject to before long. Until this tech moves out of the stores and onto the streets, Amazon will no longer have just the shopping habits of their customers but also 3D biometric recognition model. This will be normalised as a business practice, and for what? So we dont have to speak to a cashier? I hope future generations will forgive us.

It's already happened... from reviews i've read, they'll just charge like a couple ££ for no reason... especially online orders which i don't recommend you do... cos there's actually no such thing as online orders not at the speed they always promise of daily deliveries, but considering how many people they've gotta deliver to, other supermarkets couldn't do it either, but Amazon know this and they don't intend to deliver what you ordered, so far 71% of people have come forward telling us this about their "online delivery service". When people DO get stuff though there's either stuff missing or several items are rotten or they dropped items on the floor, packed it all wrong or because they use the boot of their car there's slugs on their food :\ avoid avoid their "online delivery service" because realistically they can only handle people going in themselves and keeping the stock going there but... it will change regularly. Allowing it to automatically check you out though is begging for every Supermarket that wants to do this to rob people blind, people have got to voice their concerned about this because there's no reason for it when we can Check Out ourselves on the App, even then though... What's stopping them charging us more? but they generally don't tend to try and do it if you do it manually yourself cos they know you'll see it straight away, paying Digitally by Card people have already been doing more and more for a long while now and they haven't dared charging more, they know we also have the proof in the receipt.

I don’t get the privacy argument. EVERY supermarket has cameras on you all the time, except they’re usually manned by busy-bodies who want to see if you are up to no good. In a way, this is less obtrusive because the cameras are only on you to help you make a purchase. The fact that they’re able to charge you as you pick things up and walk out the store, as well as the fact you need an Amazon account to get in, almost eradicates the need for nosey shop assistants following you around and peering over your shoulder. As I’ve no intention of stealing, I know which I prefer.

They do to a large extent but as not as many and if they monitored that closely they would not be millions of pounds lost to shop lifting every month , also CCTV cameras stop working, computers do to, an incident at one supermarket not far away saw the system wipe about a month's worth of footage this meant footage of shop lifters and an assault were lost! If the internet goes down the tills will, here at contactless supermarkets like the one in the video any power or internet outage will means the shop will have to close.

They couldn't of brought this out at a better time. Instead of queueing to leave the shop people are queueing to enter the shop. Of course everyone is used to having to queue outside the shop because of the lockdown. But this was not what we used to do prior. Amazon just normalised the queues outside the shops by making shopping faster and removing the tills. What is the difference really? They will not be able to have 100's of people in the store at the same time as they will not be able to monitor them all, so instead of queueing at the tills, we will be queueing at the front door if we decide to ship at the 'cashier less' Amazon Fresh!

They just executed it in a bad way, ordering online is a no go... don't do it... most people have said it's really bad, plus the sensors will never work 100% perfect so why nobody should pick stuff up cos they don't always pick up that you put stuff back, cool idea in theory but it's better to go with how other supermarkets want to do it of letting us scan the barcodes on stuff then self-check on the App we only need to press a couple buttons, but no QR Codes, Why do we need one? it's bad enough we'd have to keep buying a new phone cos of the Apps always keeping up with the latest Tech and poor ppl couldn't afford it. I think they don't even need us using our phones all the time they can just stick to Debit Card, What is wrong with that? and wastes far less materials than having to chuck out a good working phone whenever they start the next generation of phones, we'd still eventually have to update it but a phone from 8 years ago can still load web pages just fine. I thought it was a cool idea but... there's too many flaws and i don't want to be roped into constantly buying a new phone.

I like it when people say that they save time doing the shopping like this...I am sure they waste it elsewhere. I shop local, and my shopping never takes more than 10 minutes, with people in it...moreover, I've never been quite fond of all that pre-packed food, what a waste, and the UK is one of those worse countries in the world, concerning the amount of plastic 'debris' they leave behind every single day...

It is a new way to shop it does not mean there won't be say a orange with no packaging, because it uses tracking technology it will know what you pick up or there will be some container with a microchip, barcode etc that you put the fruit into then it knows that it is a fruit etc.

We used to have market stalls, then it changed to greengrocers and butchers, then it changed to supermarkets, then hypermarkets and now we have online and technology controlled stores. Every step of the way people complained about change, every step of the way these places improve the convenience and reduced the time we have to spend shopping for everyday essentials. It's progresson. I do a lot of shopping on Amazon because it's competitively priced and far quicker to find what you want instead of walking/driving to 5 stores to get everything you need.

Just don't think these Auto Checkouts are a good thing no no there's no freaking way i'm down with that and same with so many other people, from reviews of Amazon Fresh they've already overcharged people, it should be kept as us checking out on the Apps ourselves. Also realize that you'll have to register an account and put your Bank Details on every single website for every single store you shop at... i know we already put our bank details on 1 or 2 websites but now it's going to be for everywhere we shop and that's going to cause a whole lot of anxiety having to check and recheck their Digital Receipt so they aren't overcharged and as i said Amazon have already done so... other Supermarkets are gagging to do this. I'll only use it if i get to Check Out myself. The other issue is you'll have no choice but to keep an up-to-date phone so... every 5 years or so... you're gonna have to buy a new phone, What if you can't afford to buy a new phone? fun times... :D I like the idea and i don't mind going Digital it's just we can't let them use it to rob us blind. As Tech progresses and Automation is officially here it doesn't mean less worries it means more responsibilities and personally i'm thinking of staying off Social Media except KZbin cos of how much more intensive it would be absolutely everybody now being Online, i have great worries about what that will mean in future and there's already problems with it.

Noop not quite yet still... and humans cannot be entirely replaced we still need to maintain and clean the tech but services will always be needed especially for the elderly and disabled they'll still need people to bag stuff and take it to people's car or help them in their scooters cos some people can't hold their heavy bags or pick them up, and it looks like we'll be both scanning and bagging our stuff cos we'll just scan it then place it in our reusable bags. Current elderly will also need to be shown how to properly use their phone and Apps but they'll always need to assist those with Learning Disabilities, those who're blind or with more severe Disabilities, we'll probably need to help too especially elderly who don't remember what to do. Further into the future... showing people how to use Tech won't be an issue anymore but they'll still need to assist people. Factories are more than ever relevant too and it looks like people will go back into doing more Picking and Factory Work too even if in them Automation will replace the more tedious tasks nobody really wants to do. Farmers are going to get a shock when Fruit, Veg and Herbs will be grown using Aeroponics and killing animals for meat is going to gradually get phased out cos they'll be growing meat from animal cells, i think Chicken Farms will be more relevant because people will still need eggs but for Livestock and growing a lot of types of fruit, veg and herbs a lot of it is going to be grown in Aeroponics Warehouses, but they'll still need people for that and that's where farmers will have to go instead. So it's just going to be replaced for doing something else.

People are lazy and pick up an item and then don't put it back where they found it, work in one and you know how annoying that is at the end of the day. Fine amazon, you open these food shops that require next to no staff but you should be taxed to the max so that money can go towards the benefits that'll need to be paid out to shop workers. Ok if all this technology is putting people out of work, then the government needs to have some sort of universal basic income. No workers in shops, no drivers of trains, trucks or cars, no more offices so no cleaners or security required etc. Everyone who will be losing their jobs over the next decade will be all considered as work shy scum by the tories... just you wait.
