NBC News’ Tom Costello gets an exclusive look inside the main Space Force Satellite Operations Center. The center keeps watch over America’s military satellites and the world’s GPS network operating in an increasingly hostile environment. Concern at the still relatively new military branch is focused on the growing presence of Russian and Chinese assets in space. » Subscribe to NBC News: nbcnews.to/Subs...

It’s funny cause we always talk about how the Space Force is “obsolete”, even though it’s probably one of the most highly active branches today next to the Coast Guard.

Due to the advancements of technology but if U.S has been wrong about anything is that U.S won’t be the top of anything anymore. Take it with a grain of salt.

There’s 6 branches… you’re telling me the Space Force with barely 7000 personnel total is more active than the other 5 that have been around for centuries longer? Stop the 🧢. Coast guard is very busy like you said, pretty underrated imo but the Space Force is still trying to figure out who’s who in the zoo. They are probably undermanned and overworked like the rest of the branches but that’s likely due to them still establishing SOPs and protocols while trying to do the job at the same time with their very large force of ~6,500.

We've had a Space Force for a very long time. It is a part of the USAF, it's called SAC, Strategic Air Command. Not knocking or comparing. I know it's something that has needed funding and development for some time. It's also not just about fighting in outer space. It is also about protecting ourselves from weapons deployed from space. God speed US Space Force!

Actually WRONG. It's was called Space Command and I was in it in the early 80's. It was morphed into what is now called Space Force. Trump did nothing except sign authorization to remove the funding for it separate from the Air Force. SAC is Strategic Air Command a division of the Air Force.

As a former USAF Security Policeman, I often hear other service member's talk negatively or derogatorily about the Space Force. They have no idea as to what they're talking about. The AF started out with SAC and NORAD. It had the AF Space Command. All that has really happened is this has evolved into it's own entity. The future wars will be fought primarily from the air and from space. Those ground troop's (soldier's) will need our Air/space based weapons system's and surveillance. We are the eye in the sky. We have military resources in orbit you have no idea of. So please stop the rhetoric and do your job.... Let us do ours!!

Ridiculed by the media and Hollywood because Trump formed it. But we all know now with what's happening in Ukraine that the US is on hair-trigger alert for a potential war with Russia or China anytime, and the first minutes of that war would be fought not in the sea or land, but in outer space. Whoever loses space supremacy loses the war. It's that important. No one's laughing now.

The amount of energy human beings spend fighting each other instead of the using it toward the betterment of the entire human race is staggering and possibly the biggest tragedy since life began on this planet.
@KarlenBell
@KarlenBell 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of technology that better the human race is from a result of war. If there was no war, V-2 rocket won't be used to attack enemies, and thus, rocket development won't...lift off. No rocket development, no Cold War Space Race, then we might not even have GPS networks or other probes that can explore other planets.
@A.C.71

@@KarlenBell Honestly that is just ignorant thinking to think if no war we would be worse off. You ever think if we had no wars we could focus more on whatever we find a need to develop..we don't need a war in order to focus on what the world needs. That it just dumb.
@KarlenBell
@KarlenBell 2 жыл бұрын

@@KarlenBell There are many inventions developed from all parts of the world that came about without war being the catalyst for their creation and the fact the inventions created during war were even able to be created at all proves we could have created them without war but the real question is what things could we have created if war was never a factor? If we were to focus on things unrelated to war and destruction there may very easily been inventions and tech that were far greater for all for humanity than what came about during war, the fact we were able to eventually use the inventions created for war and destruction for good proves this. If we were able to focus our energy on non violent things more, because war was moot... humanity will be the better for it, someone who thinks otherwise and is pro war, pro killing innocent people and accepts that as an absolutely necessary catalyst for tech development is actually ignorant, mean spirited and part of the problem..not the solution.
@KarlenBell
@KarlenBell 2 жыл бұрын
@@A.C.71 "the fact we were able to eventually use the inventions created for war and destruction for good proves this" no it does not, it actually proves that our lives were improved through war. Still, you have not given an example of a developed country that does good for the world that was not created as a result of war. And you, using words like "could have" just proves how imaginary your ideology is, and not realistic. The non-ignorant fact of the matter is that, if there was no war, there would be no technological breakthroughs. We will all be living like pigs, just eat, sleep, and do whatever pigs do; ie anything but making progress, let alone betterment of any sort. To say someone "is actually ignorant, mean spirited and part of the problem" just because they know that war has helped human development is, ironically, the most dumb and ignorant statement ever.

I fully support what they're doing and appreciate how science and technology can progress in a competitive environment. The CCP and Russia are definitely hostile adversaries and geopolitical competitors on earth, but the US Space Force needs to work on the "boogieman story" for this Cold War 2.0 between the US/UK/EU/JPN and CCP and Russia. I don't doubt that there might be an intel report out there claiming that China and Russia are looking to have a space war and shoot down our satellites between the earth-moon orbit, but they know that's BS. Who came up with, Elon Musk? That sounds like something I'd invent to get a billion-dollar defense contract. Wouldn't the space debris damage their satellites, too, or would the Chinese satellites shoot ours down and then hide on the dark side of the moon? We need to work on this story because that sounds too crazy for even North Korea.

I am part of and a joint-founder of Space Force. Seeing as there is so much space satellite activity commercial, scientific, and military and to speak a dangerous truth there really isn't any exact metric difference, I do not object to the discussion of foreign space clutter here, although I actually mean no disrespect by the diction. My point is the main threat is not a foreign adversary but gravitationally multi and pan polar orbiting space rocks and lifeless exoplanets which mean us no harm but neither can be dissuaded from striking the Earth and doing great damage. There are no embassies in the dead cosmos; and these celestial objects literally have hearts of iron. I propose a U.S. Space Force armed, scientifically sophisticated space station outside the orbits of all the commerce and spy clutter, out with the international in terms of space distance, but classified. To secure non-interference and even cooperation with this space station, which is really meant to fire out into the cosmos to protect all Earth not downward at our Earth, this must be a matter of honor, we actually need relatively more international cooperation and good will in the space realm; though obviously this wil not be an absolute nor pervading all matters during this time of what the press could accurately describe as semi-world war if they assessed the statistics a little differently. But no matter; please build the Space Station.
