Honestly, I only have two real critiques. 1. There is NO reason for an E-1 to have *any* rank insignia. "You are wearing no rank insignia, because you have earned no promotions yet. Don't sweat it - you're getting promoted in a couple of months anyway; at least you don't have to pay to add a useless insignia until then." The only reason to give an E-1 anything in terms of a rank widget is to avoid the "E-1 Fuzzy" on the MultiCam uniform. If that's the worry, fine, just issue them a blank MultiCam square to cover up (and protect) the loop square. The purpose of rank insignia is to differenciate between troops.of different levels of authority and responsibility - there is zero reason to have any rank insignia for the troop at the bottok.of the ladder. 2. The separated delta in the senior NCO grades is just distracting (literally slowed down counting). Just use the same globe & delta above the downward pointing chevrons the junior NCOs use - the fact they have arcs at all immediately shows they are senior NCOs. As Coco Chanel said about accessories, "Put on everything you want to wear, and then take one thing off." I do like the hexagon taking the place of the wreath for the service level senior NCO. Clean and ties into the rest of the USSF "theme" stylistically, but still clearly links back to the wreaths used for other services. (Just like the the USAF "farts and darts" is clearly analogous to "scrambled eggs" on the other service's hats, while still being uniquely "Air Force".) The new "Class A" service uniforms are just silly. Keep the various insiginia elements (like the shape of the name tags, and the USSF button designs and collar badges) of you like- they actually look cool and distinctive. Keep the color differentiation between the jacket and trousers if you want - that's distinctive. Hell, even keep the popped collar if you want (perspnally, I'd stick with something closer to what the other services use in terms of styling, but there are worse uniform sins than a ST:TNG style Mandarin collar... and if you're going to go with a Mandarin collar on the blouse, couldn't you have gotten rid of the necktie, too, and gone with a banded shirt collar?!?). But for God's sake, lose the 1990s Science Fiction diagonal buttons!

Tangentially... someone brilliantly described RAF ranks as sounding as though they're out of HG Wells - Flight Lieutenant, Wing Commander, Air Commodore etc. Space Force could have gone down this road, but disappointingly didn't - not fully, anyway. @BenjaminPitkin3 жыл бұрын
Actually, there's a very good reason for it I think. Space-force is breaking away from the Airforce because the requirements of the service are totally different - it therefore needs a completely different culture. Maneuvering in space is all about mathematics, it takes time. It requires intelligence, patience, and diligence - and a much better appreciation for the skills of it's enlisted ranks. Space combat is largely non-kinetic and involves a much greater component of cyber-security and intelligence gathering - and indeed whenever a kinetic solution is called for - it's most likely going to be done calmly by a Specialist controlling a satellite. Someone with a PhD in astrophysics, calmly sitting at a control station on earth, in front of a computer terminal, re-checking their Delta-V calculations, and monitoring telemetry data while sipping a 'Chai-Latte'. The Airforce, on the other hand, is highly inculcated with a culture of 'pilot worship'. Which is to say, pilots get treated like rock-stars but if you're an enlisted grease-monkey on the tools you're a nobody and nothing. The Airforce is all about supporting hot-headed pilots fly by the "seat of their pants" and Space-force is making a deliberate attempt to break from this culture.
@simonmoorcroft14173 жыл бұрын
Lieutenant, Commander and Commodore are navy ranks. So the RAF owes its ranks to the Royal Navy, which of course is the "senior service" and around hundreds of years before H.G Wells was born. However your right about the Space Force ranks. I assume eventually Space Force personnel will actually deploy into space. I can see a "naval" influence asserting itself on the U.S Space Force at that point, since crewing a space vehicle or station is far more like crewing a naval vessel, especially a submarine than being based at a nice comfortable air force base.
@Brecconable3 жыл бұрын
As a fellow Brit I agree. However the junior rank structure doesn't make sense to me. How does a Leading Aircraftman be inferior to a Senior Aircraftman and Junior Technician? While people may laugh at the idea of "Space Force," keep in mind that generals prior to World War I laughed at the idea of aircraft being used for military purposes. Wars were fought on the ground with infantry and tanks, or at sea with battleships. However, once aerial photography started taking place and those same generals got a bird's eye view of the enemy's positions, they quickly realized the value of what they previously laughed at. War has never been the same, and an air force arguably becomes the most important component of a modern military. Moving into the 21st century where various organizations are planning manned missions to Mars, or have invested interests in satellites, it only makes sense for the Space Force to be the next evolution of the US military as we reach for the stars and beyond. We will soon outgrow this planet, and spread our cosmic wings and fly onto other worlds. A military branch of service needs to lay its foundation now in preparation for the future, just as the pilots did in World War I.

Your description of the first sergeant is more aligned with the role in the army/marines. In the AF and USSF, The senior enlisted in a unit is referred to as the chief enlisted manager, or simply "chief" and is usually a CMSgt, but can be a SMSgt. They also focus more on the administration of the enlisted force and serve as a mentor for the SNCOs in the unit. The first sergeant is a special duty that Senior NCOs can fill, and is more focused on advising the commander on the discipline and care and feeding of the enlisted force. Typically, a First Sergeant will attend a special training called the "First Sergeant Academy" this is also where they earn their diamond. Then be placed in a unit outside of their career field. A "First Shirt" or simply "Shirt" will serve 1-2 assignments as a shirt before returning to their career field and back to a normal job. Most squadrons have a master sergeant as their shirt, with some larger units having a SMSgt. The only SMSgt shirt I've seen was at my last unit, while had ~450 members. I've also never seen or heard of the mythical CMSgt First Sergeant, but I can't imagine there are many across the AF.

At 2:06 when discussing the evolution of the ranks, the graphic showing the ranks is incorrect. I was in the Air Force from '84 - '92. There was no such thing as a Airman 3rd class or 2nd class. The ranks were as follows: no insignia, Airman Basic (AB), E1 1 stripe, subdued star, Airman (Amn), E2 2 stripes, subdued star, Airman First Class (A1C), E3 3 stripes, subdued star, Senior Airman (SrA), E4 - rank earned after 3 yrs of time in service 3 stripes, pronounced (white) star, Sergeant (Sgt), E4 - also called buck sergeant, rank earned after 4 yrs of time in service. After Sergeant, any subsequent ranks had to be earned by testing and other requirements. After '93, the ranks are the same with the following exception. All stars are white on the insignia. The sergeant rank no longer exists, it goes from SrA to Staff Sergeant (SSgt), E5. Upper ranks are the same, except the change in stripe structure of Master Sergeant (MSgt), E7 to Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt), E9.

@brycepatties3 жыл бұрын
You might be surprised at where Guardians might operate. If they have to integrate with Airmen and Soldiers in a joint environment downrange, it makes the most sense for them to wear the same uniform. As a rule, utility uniforms will largely be the same across all services going forward. The charlie foxtrot of uniform patterns that occurred in the early 2000s was largely a result of the USMC giving everyone else a middle finger and the Pentagon giving everyone lots of money in the wake of 9/11. Congress recently required that any new utility uniforms would be, well, uniform across services to reduce costs. The Navy and Marine Corps will probably just stick with what they have, and if new utilities are required, the Army, Air Force, and Space Force will work together to design it.

Specialist has been a long standing traditional rank for E4s. Even spawning a culture of its own called the E4 Mafia. But now we're going to have Guardians who rank the same as Privates, Airmen, and Seamen being called Specialist. I think its just a bit disrespectful to the Army. I wouldn't mind their E4s being called Specialists. But not an E1. An E1 is not a specialist, they are a trainee. Even if they've passed basic, they're still likely in training. Could even call them Airmen, signifying that they haven't reached their full potential if they want to go that route.

So, the first US military space mission was in 1958, by the US Army. The first crewed military space mission was in 1963, US Air Force pilot Joe Walker flying the X-15 prototype. The first crewed military mission to orbit was STS-51-C in 1985, which was done directly for the Department of Defense. Currently, there are 77 uncrewed spacecraft in orbit being controlled by the Space Force. There's also a reusable technology test bed in the X-37B, which is under USSF command. There are no current plans to launch military personnel into space, but there's been some preliminary work done to explore the feasibility of using a SpaceX Starship as a dedicated Space Force satellite carrier for launching, repairing, and recovering uncrewed Space Force Spacecraft. In parallel, the US Army has done some investigation into using Starship landers to resupply isolated bases in emergency situations. The USA interprets the Outer Space Treaty as meaning no nation is allowed to deploy military personnel off world, so would consider any crewed military spacecraft, space stations, or planetary bases as being a breach of international law.

I do hope that the Specialist ranks eventually change their names to something involving Guardian, though. I mean Specialist is fine, but it just feels really lazy. For the service dress, I don't think borrowing heavily from science fiction is a bad thing. These uniform styles are already associated with Space, so use it.
