Inside Zimbabwe's Codeine Cough Syrup Epidemic

Zimbabwe is at risk of losing its youth to codeine cough syrup, as the addiction epidemic has already engulfed what the experts estimate could be over half the country’s young people. Despite the growing problem, Zimbabwe’s government has not yet opened rehabilitation clinics, meaning addicts are often sent to prison or psychiatric wards.
The cough syrup, often of the brand BronCleer, is imported illegally from South Africa, and is sold on every street corner, in bars, school yards and on busses for as little as $3 a bottle.
We meet current and former users, as well as the NGOs pushing the government to open up rehabs, to find out why cough syrup has become the drug of choice for so many young Zimbabweans.
This documentary was produced with help from DanChurchAid, and originally aired on VICE in 2019.

I've done a lot of drugs in my time and the thing that really helped me was finding a hobby. I'm really happy that at least one of the young men in this video found something to pull him out of the cycle. I can only imagine the hell it must be to be an addict in a country so impoverished

yeah boredom is a big part of it. I was almost clean after a long taper, but then lockdown hit and I was stuck at home. Within a week I had ordered a box of OC80's and was back to doing 300mg+ of oxycodone a day and I'm still doing it now. I'm back to work but I need to taper all the way down again and tbh my heart really isn't into tapering again. But having a low stress job can really help. Having a high stress job on the other hand is an utter nightmare and will just make you use more.

thats what people need to realize. drugs are not a problem. they are just a really really bad solution to that problem, to cope, im an alcoholic and i also use weed from time to time(not a pothead, i wish i was, better than being the alcoholic that i am) but i dont wanna go to AA because they just focus on why do you go to alcohol. the drug doesnt matter, and them pushing you to be a better person doesnt matter. if morals mattered i wouldnt do drugs that were illegal. honestly ive just been anxious to get my mom to help me get counseling. to me therapy with an individual is better than a fucking lets get better circlejerk of AA. luckily i have atleast a decent head on my shoulders, I normaly do weed and alcohol, and actually really wanna try shrooms and lsd again, or try dmt for once. but luckily ive done spice, coke, crack, and fentanyl, and my reaction too all of them was"i dont feel high, i just feel really fucking happy. amazing. this is why this shits so addicting, with weed and alcohol i at least felt different, with these, i just feel normal and happy. and thats why its addicting as fuck not to mention its bad for you. im not going to do this again or i will just be addicted." the reason people do drugs is because life sucks and drugs make you feel better, even with the downsides. in order to beat an addiction, you cant just try to stop doing it, or it will be hard as fuck NOT to restart. to beat addiction you go to the reason they are using, WHAT ARE THEY RUNNING FROM. im running from depression and a sense of this being my life and never getting better. BUT i need to face it, you cant resolve a problem if you act like it doesn't exist.

I'm from zimbabwe and i absolutely love how you challenged the government on this. As much as the former president is gone, everyday there are stories of missing politicians who speak out like you do. People are still tortured for speaking out(this comment alone is something i'm afraid o type), hopefully this raises awareness and motivates more documentaries like this. I'm not one to play the blame game towards the government, but i also think the responsibility is on us the citizens to do a lot more for meaningful change.

It wasn't long after that the gov't banned it's use in all over-the-counter medicines and it then became a prescription-only drug.

@Dick EnAss how was it better for Black citizens when the white supremacists ran Zimbabwe or any part of Africa for that matter? Cecil Rhodes, a white supremacist of English descent, and at least 13 other white supremacists ran European nations used military force to divide Africa into political territories in the late 19th century well into the 20th with the purpose to exploit ALL of Africa for it’s raw materials. Instead of keeping a white as the face of the carnage, the white supremacists installed puppet leaders in the 1930-60s and declared these countries as “independent.” The European white supremacists hand picked these puppet leaders which is how each of these countries still accepts billions in raw material resources as tax tribute to this day. Mugabe and Gaddafi, are just some that resisted white supremacist direct rule and are/were labeled as ruthless warlords or dictators for it. Mugabe’s ONLY mistake was thinking that Chinese would help create jobs for Zimbabweans which has now led to complete Chinese rule in Zimbabwe since his unfortunate death.
