Woman Says Store Accused Her of Stealing After Using Self-Checkout

The scanners at self-checkout lines are meant to make shopping a quick and easy experience. However, they are causing a major headache to some shoppers. After paying for her items at an Ohio Walmart, Marquona Tippens says a security guard accused her of stealing. He let her go but Tippens says she was so offended she returned everything. Two weeks later, she had a warrant out for her arrest and went to jail for six hours. All charges were dismissed once security footage proved her innocence. Now, she’s suing Walmart and the security guard for false imprisonment. They both deny any wrongdoing.

So if you’re an aggressive criminal that steals a whole cart of stuff, they don’t bat an eye. But if you’re a law abiding citizen who accidentally forgets to scan a bag of candy, you’re going to jail? Wow this makes perfect sense. Thanks Walmart.

This almost happened to me last night. I bought 4 of the smaller size 2x4 hanger and 4 of the bigger size 2x6 hangers. Some busybody (who should have been operating a check out line) told me I didn't scan 5 hangers. I had already scanned 8 hangers and asked her if she saw a 9th hanger. Stupid person walked away.

It’s because the law abiding person follows them, cooperates & gives them all their information making it easy to arrest them. Meanwhile the shoplifters who walk out of the store don’t listen & don’t give any information so tracking them down becomes hard.

This happened to my daughter and I at our local Wal-Mart. It was evening time during the week. I had to get some groceries as I work days. There was no actual people to check us out so I had to use the self check out. The scanner was constantly beeping and alerting the staff. Every time the lady had to come over I apologized to her saying how sorry I was for having to bother her. She had a real attitude problem. Eventually we got checked out, $300 later. As we were walking through the 1st set of doors, a man grabbed my cart. I seriously thought I was getting robbed. No it was security. He starts screaming at me to come with him. I said I'm not going anywhere with you. Then appears the woman worker that was reluctantly helping me at the register. Turned out she was an assistant manager. The man accused me of skipping items. I looked at her and said you helped me several times. How could I have skipped anything? She just looked at me. No response. I said you know what, you can have all this back. I want a refund. Security then said I passed the point of sale so I couldn't return the stuff. I said I'm still in the store so I haven't left the buildings. The woman then said ok I could return the stuff and to follow her to customer service. We did. The security guy called the police while she was taking her time refunding me. All the sudden there was police around me like I was a threat. The whole time I told my daughter to stay cool so there would be no problems. After talking to the police they told me they get called there All the time and I apologized to them for wasting their time. The entire time I was talking to the police, the security guy was screaming that he wanted to press charges. The police eventually told him that won't be happening. After the assistant manager went through my entire cart she discovered I didn't miss anything. I looked at her and said, really? Wow. Wal-Mart invoked a no trespass on us. I was at Walmart and rang up 2 $7 shirts. A Bob’s Burgers and a Stranger Things one. As soon as I scanned the 2nd shirt, the self checkout locked me out and said there was a missed scan. The clerk came over, reviewed the footage of me scanning the item, looked at my bags and my scan history and found that I did, in fact scan both shirts. Self checkout is a menace. Lol

I have a friend who worked at Walmart and went shopping one day after her shift. She had a full cart load and had grabbed a $3 lip gloss and put it in the child seat. However, it had fallen down to the bottom of the basket and she didn't notice as she was finishing checking out with a cashier. Asset protection pulled her in and accused her of stealing. She offered to go pay for it as she had intended to do, but they wouldn't let her. Even though there was video evidence showing that she had put it in the basket, she was fired on the spot, but no charges were pressed. So Walmart can go eff itself.

Humiliating an honest person over a bag of candy - - that she had not even taken out of the store yet!?! Then refusing to allow her to pay for it, hassling her, embarrassing her - - - I wouldn’t be surprised if someone ends up suing them because it caused a PTSD‼️ Decades ago after a very hectic shift at the hospital where I worked, I stopped on the way home for needed supplies. I wondered why the total grocery bill was higher than I had expected, but I figured I’d miscalculated because I was so tired. At home I checked the receipt and went back to the store because I had been charged $20.00 more on the price of the laundry detergent. The manager later found out, that the cashier was doing this so that she could pocket that extra $$$.

I thought this was a random pulling a prank on us, as he had no uniform. But we proceeded to go to the back to the security room. As we go to the security room, they tell my mother what she has allegedly done. You get the gist, the security guard and another Walmart associate took her ID and her personal details and said if she has ever done this again, she would be arrested. Yet she gets treated like a criminal?! What the heck?! I hope both women win their lawsuits. This is serious case of injustice. If this can happen to them. It can happen to anyone.

They arrested my sister before she was done scanning. If Walmart would actually have a cashier working, that would help. They just MAKE you use self checkout. Even if you have a lot of stuff you're buying. Takes forever and then you're sitting your bags on the floor. Ridiculous!!! They also hassled my Dad over a can of corn that was less than a dollar.

You didnt leave the store with unpaid product. The door person is not loss prevention. Loss preventions needs to see you steal and have constant observation with you exiting out the front door without paying. If you were detained inside the store by a walmart employee and did not exit the store, you can sue walmart for a large amount of money. Even police cannot detain you for an unpaid item in a shopping cart.

For this reason I refuse to use self check out. Left a whole cart full of stuff at a Walmart a few months back because there was no open check out and only self check was available. I told the woman at the front to open a check out would leave the cart sitting. There was milk and meat in the cart so if they did not put it back it would be trashed. She told me that self check out was all they had at the time. I left the cart sitting and walked out. As I did so did two outer people also telling the woman they refused to use self check out. So she ended up with 3 full carts of food to restock.

This makes me terrified to even go to the store because my local Walmart got rid of their cashiers entirely in favor of all self checkouts. That's the only option at my local store. I just pray I don't make any mistakes while scanning groceries.

Just read on the screen that your item has been checked out, that woman with the Reese's pieces thought she could get away with it, she probably has done it before. That's usually what happens, they don't always catch them the first time and then the person thinks they can get away with it because they did before.

Stores make mistakes ALL THE TIME when there were no machines. They always overcharge by ringing up a different price than the price posted on the shelves. Why aren't they criminally charged also and go to jail?

I worked at a Home Depot, and the store I worked at was a test store for self check out only with cashiers (mostly teenagers) being left up there to watch. Not only did it cause more frustration for customers when they didn’t work (which was often), they would also encourage more people to steal, because they thought no one was watching.

One day I let my 17 year old daughter scan my items because I left my glasses at home and the lady worker messed up on a 0.49 cent can of peas and the owner called the cops and they looked at the video and the cops got real mad at the owner and told the owner, “If you call us again, we will not come”. The cop asked us if we wanted to press charges on the owner because the peas weren’t scanned because the lady who worked there overrided the peas when it didn’t scan. The police officer asked me if I wanted to press charges for them falsely accusing me of stealing? I am a god fearing man so I said no. I just never shopped there again. Imagine, this whole thing took 45 minutes over a 0.49 cent can of peas that their worker scanned and overrided. My daughter kept telling the police that she wanted to press charges but the police said she was too young to press charges. If my daughter was just one year older, that Chinese store owner would have gone to jail. 100%.

Some people just get such bad luck. I remember taking some earphones through the self-checkout, a guy came and removed the security tag before I scanned them, and I forgot to scan them. Then when I realized and returned, a young lady tried to tell me that I was wrong and I had paid for them!

We were buying beer and liquor for a friend's wedding and we had two bottles of jack fire with those little security device things on top. We scanned the first one and it told us to wait for the ID check. The employee comes over, checks our IDs and takes the two bottles over to her counter to remove the security devices. She comes back and puts them both in the bag and walks away...my friend and I look at each other, proceed to ring up the remaining two 30 packs of beer, pay and walk out lol
