The B in Apt 23 was SOOOOOO good and Krysten was comedic gold in that. She's right that the timing wasn't great because it really was in that transition period of people watching less TV and being online more. And yes, the writing was definitely ahead of its time.

Just like what happened with Hannibal; absolutely brilliant show that was so well written, acted and produced (and shocking it was allowed on primetime NBC!) but it was on during that weird transition period between cable/satellite and streaming. Plus NBC did a poor job of marketing. To top it all off it was simply ahead of its time hence shows very similar IE Mindhunter getting very popular years later and the true crime genre blowing up online.

I owe so much to her for the work she put in on Jessica Jones. I'd just escaped an abusive marriage and felt like I had no agency. It is so refreshing to see a successful actress talk with such joy about her craft. Jessica Jones is the best female driven action series since Buffy. Im gutted she hasn't been back in the MCU yet. The show deserved the same praise Daredevil got. The line Jess mom gave slays me "A hero is just someone who gives a shit and does something about it." My love for Krysten has expanded even more. Thank you Michael for relating the story about your emotionally neglectful parents because I see so much of that in my own experiences. Ive often said my Dad was in as little of my life as he could get away with and still live in the same house. Just near total disinterest in me as a person. I didnt notice this emotional vacancy until I was older. When I was younger it just registered as tough love or something. I came to the realization they didnt care when I turned 18 and found out they had NOTHING for me. They didnt even bother to save anything for me for college or offer me any kind of support or help. We were barely middle class but I know they couldve done something over the years. My Grandfather is a rich accountant. It hit me like a ton of bricks how fucked I was but what hurt more was that just no one cared enough. But boy did the whole family mock me when I dropped out of college. Not one asked me why or if I needed help. Fuck them all.

I also like listening to your childhood stories concerning your dad, they really hit home considering my dad was pretty much the same, but much more absent. This was great! Rarely is an actor honest about craft. How she went into detail about the heavy scene study and script analysis. Most people don't understand the level of attention it takes. I wouldn't call it work as much as commitment and extreme attention to detail. (Calling it hard work paints a different picture in my opinion. It's relentless focus and radical curiosity and empathy. )But I wish more good working actors would explain their prep process. Everyone's is different and they're all worth hearing and trying to see what works best for you. Often, it's a combination of things. She has a gift for memory, which is extremely helpful. That's probably a natural talent. That leaves you so much time to create rich backstory for the character and discover intention. If it's not on the page. Great interview!

The interesting part of validation is by not giving validation can also provide a kid with drive to accomplish things. My Dad never said I was good at anything or that he was proud of me. Finally. Someone is talking about how hard it is to engage when one is a private introvert, faking being an extrovert and making it look easy…all while you can barely hear what anyone is saying at times cause your heart is beating so hard in your head. 😂 But then at the end everyone tells you how great you did and no one could tell you were freaking on the inside. And of course, it’s my girl Krysten- whom I’ve loved in everything she’s ever been in, going all the way back to when she played Jane all those years ago now, right up to Nightbooks in 2021, and of course her brilliant turn as Jessica Jones) sharing these very relatable truths about being someone who’s naturally very nervous on the inside in certain situations, but able to fake it on the outside at the same time. I work in state government, and I’ve had to lead many a meeting with many a state and federal agency director and staff. Being able to push through the nerves and triumph while making it look easy is part of why I’m so successful in my career. When I’m at work, I give everything I have. But as soon as I’m home, I turn off work and I’m all the way home with my beautiful family. But the only place I’m ever truly at ease is home with my family. I just relate to what she said so much. And she makes it look so EASY. It’s very validating to know that someone as gifted, confident, talented and beautiful as Krysten also has those same kinds of internal anxieties in certain situations, but has found a way to push through triumphantly. And I bet she’s an amazing Mom.

This was an amazing interview, love Krysten and the conversation between you both. The chechemistry was amazing I see a long friendship between the two of you. The Love Krysten has for her child, I think everyone never raises their child the way they grew up. I know where you are coming from Michael growing up. I came from a dysfunctional family and you learn from your parents and their parenting skills. Everything back in the day is different like Krysten said time changes. I made sure I raised my children different from how my parents raised me. I was always there for them and give them compliments and praised them and gave them love. It’s does make a difference in their lives and they do grew up with confidence and makes them into loving parents. What I learn from raising my children, I been doing it for my grandchildren and spending time with them as much as I can. My children have more confidence then I do and they don’t stuff from social anxiety like I do, I also get very intimidated by men from the abused I suffered from by my dad and ex husband. I was isolated more than 20 years, by my Ex husband didn’t have anyone but my children in my life. I spent the time telling them that I loved them and how beautiful they are and give them the confidence even now coming from and abusive situation. Always told them never lie and never miss treat anybody no matter what. I have come along way after my divorce in the past 20 years from support groups and therapy, I have more confidence and my social skills have improved a lot over the years. I still have problems in social environments sometimes causing panic attacks and still deal with PTSD and I get very overwhelmed. My physical health from past injuries and cancer has been a very hard battle and a fight the past decade I haven’t give up on the fight. Your podcast has been a blessing and listen to your guests you learn so much about life and the hopes and dreams and the struggles of life from each and every guests. Krysten Is so down to earth Love Her. I could listen to this episode a few times, Michael you Rock! and this podcast have been more of a life saver to so many like myself and I can see how it’s helped you as much as your listeners. Keep on being awesome Michael hopefully one day I can thank you in person, I have been a long time listener and will continue plus I will keep on spreading the word. Only can do the lower tier on you patreon been helping my daughter with raising my granddaughter and I help by donate to the Ronald McDonald houses like my mother did, and to women and children’s shelters for domestic violence when I can.

Krysten was a cool guest and I love how passionate she is about her job. Love her on Breaking Bad and Jessica Jones, hopefully she will reprise her role as Jessica Jones in the near future as she was awesome in that role.

I absolutely loved the B from Apt. 23, it would be a blast if they would bring it back. I’m worried what Disney will do to Jessica Jones, after seeing what they did to Daredevil in She Hulk.

This encapsulates the mental illness of actors narcissism…..”You whisper I love you to your kid? Wow! That’s amazing”. They congratulate each other for brushing their teeth workout a therapist..

I know that actors can flip a switch and put on a believable front. But, it feels like the way Krysten was on there is the way she is on any given day and in most scenarios. She's the type of person that I can see myself hanging with. Not because of who she is, but because of her positive energetic and bubbly personality. There's about 3-4 people like that where I work and we just play off of each other and feed each other. The work day, no matter what we go through, is so much better when "the gang" is there. I won't lie and say that Jessica Jones is my favorite show. But's right there with Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil, and Defenders (thank God I can watch it on Disney Plus now). These shows are about people who are bad asses, but they're very human and have to deal with shit that a lot of "normal" people go through and deal with. Having said that, there's only one person that can do Jessica Jones and that's Krysten.
