Fun fact about pub names in Britain - they're named things like 'The Kings Head' & 'The Black Swan' because outside there would be a painted image above the entrance on the outside. This was done to help identify public houses (pubs) before most people were literate and could read / write. Most frequenters were agriculture / factory workers and would use the image above the entrance to identify the pub.
@JimWhitaker8 ай бұрын
Alternatively, alehouses would traditionally be identified by a bough from an evergreen tree fixed above the entrance. I last saw this in Austria a couple of decades ago.
@jack28aug7 ай бұрын
in the midlands we nickname them also, so my locals were the coach n horses (coke n snorters), the rose n crown (closing down), the travellers rest (old mans vest), the olympic (the armpit), and lastly the victoria which we call "the middle", coz its in the middle of the rest of em.

35:30 - As someone who worked in a pub in London, most of the strange requests we'd do, after clarifying about three times that is what they wanted. We'd then try whatever weird thing it was after our shifts, just to see if it actually worked or if it was just mental. The main one that stands out to me is having lager topped with pepsi, which honestly was nowhere near as bad as I expected - pretty much the same as a lemonade top haha, even if I looked at the guy who ordered it like he'd escaped from the local asylum!

22:45 fun fact about half pints, my dad worked in a lot of pubs and you can tell a landlord is an alcoholic as usually they will be drinking half pints to make it seem they aren't drinking as much
@lynnejamieson20638 ай бұрын
Until relatively recently in Scotland, there was a whole section of society (mainly working class men, though by the time I was working behind a bar in the mid 90’s they were mostly retired) who would buy a single half pint of beer to last their entire visit and would order however many whiskys to sip and once the got down to the last of their whisky, they’d pour the last few drips into their beer. This was my Granda’s way of drinking in a pub and I can only say that in the thirty odd years we shared this planet, I can only really remember him being properly drunk once…though my brothers will have seen it far more often due to Burns Suppers mainly.

Archaeologist/historian here. Fun fact: humans back then weren’t that much smaller on average than we are today - maybe a few inches at most. But the reason that many things from that era are smaller when compared to today is because of the cost of materials. It was much more expensive and difficult to find the materials for doors the size of doors today or larger beds, so people made things as comfortably small as they could. There is not a correlation between drinking cow milk and growing taller - it’s all genetics, puberty, and diet. The milk myth was spread by our government to support dairy farmer lobbyists. Humans are slightly taller on average today due to nothing more than better access to nutritious foods, and this is a cycle that is visible throughout our history as species. I really enjoyed this video (and the series) and will definitely have to check out some of these places next time I’m over there! 💙

I wonder if half-pints are less common in cities where no one is driving, like London where pedestrian and public transportation is the way to go. I'm Canadian, and the only time I see people order a half-pint in a bar is if they've driven there, and plan to drive back home afterwards. It's small enough that they can enjoy a beer with a meal but it won't (normally) impair someone to where their blood-alcohol level is going to land them a DUI.
