As a retired truck driver the best advice I can give is invest in a mini fridge, an electric stovetop, a nice TV/computer, a small grill for summer, adblocker for listening to things on youtube, A dehydrator for fruits and meats. Use truck stops for showers, laundry, and socializing. But don't give in and buy their over priced stuff. Plan your comfort accordingly. It's key for the long haul. Drive safe. Love from Wisconsin!

@@lingesh2773 Is that a fact or an assumption? Euro trucks have a smooth, curved front. US trucks might have slightly less overall frontal surface from what I can see, but it is split up in various ways, so there might be a lot more turbulence. Fuel costs are significantly higher in Europe, which further warrants the assumption that Euro-trucks are quite aerodynamic. Especially since there is probably more acceleration going on due to the smaller-scale, denser road/traffic network. A factor that might mitigate that point, though, is that fuel costs is something that any shipping business would put great emphasis on minimizing. (Unless it's just a cultural difference due to said lower fuel costs in the USA.)

I did 30 years long haul. Admittedly, trucking is paying more now, but for the last ten years I drove I noticed the comraderie has been diminishing. With all the cell phones now and the Qualcomm for instant communication with the company, nobody talks on the c.b anymore. The restaurants are being taken out of the truck stops in favor of fast food. Hell, most drivers don't even own an atlas. It seemed to me that the the job got to be a chore. It used to be a lifestyle along with it being a job. There are no "characters" out there. I retired three years ago and quite frankly I was glad to. I still enjoyed the driving part. But, trucking used to be a fraternity. It's no longer that. There is no brotherhood. And really, that's too bad. Another one of those parts of life that are gone.

I went to a tech school. Paid out of my pocket for my training and got my CDL with no job. My first job at Roehl transport. They had cameras in the truck and nit picked me. I quit. Then got a Bill in the mail for something like $8000 for “training”. I already had my license. The only “training” was job orientation. I refuse to pay it. They sent to collections. It ruined my perfect credit. There is a special place in hell for these crooked employers.

There were still independent owner operators who bought their own freight when I started in 1996. These guys were rich, very high income. They bought a truckload of oranges in CA & lined up a buyer on the East Coast as they drove. All cash paid buying & selling. For them, trucking was lucrative & they were treated well by shippers & receivers. I knew a guy who bought plastics in Dallas,, produce in CA, & whatever he could find in the northeast, making a giant loop of the continent.. Every cent of profit went to him because he was the buyer & seller. But for company drivers, it is a no respect job anywhere they go. The highly respected trucker who earns more than doctors is long gone.

I wouldn't say that the days of high income truckers are long gone. There are still drivers out here that build up a small independent trucking empire and have multiple trucks and drivers working for them. This is still attainable. Much harder now due to the rising costs of fuel and maintenance plus the strict driving hours they have to abide by. My dad just had to sell his truck because of Biden cracking down on the Oil and Gas industry. Work dried up

I couldn’t do what these men and women do. I did 10 years school bus driving and I saw these same issues in a smaller setting. My last 2 years, about 95% of the coworkers I started with were gone. The district would much hire new people than try and keep their veteran workforce. Right now, about 98% of the district drivers are new hires.

I'm truck driver and I believe the drivers that did the freedom convoy did it for the wrong reason. It should not have been for lifting the covid mandate, which is the message they seemed to be getting across I think is just stupid. Should of been for, no home time, low wages, dumb laws that make it hard for us to work. Companies taking advantage of us, the additude in the industry that we are expendable. Just my opinion. I have been trucking for 10 years now, and think everyday what can I do to get out. I'm over worked and under paid .

I drove school buses for a few years. NOT the same thing, but it did open my eyes. Trucks and buses seem to emanate some kind of force field that lowers the IQ of everyone around them. People cut you off and hit the brakes for the exit they forgot about, not realizing that you can't stop that fast. I learned that if you were trying to get onto a busy stroad without a traffic signal, sometimes you just had to go, "well, they have brakes." People sure as hell won't let YOU out. People only care about THEIR convenience, so if it's not their child they're cutting off, or their food, they don't care. All they see is a big ugly box that is in their way. It changed how I drive around truckers. If they're signaling, I will hang back and flash them to come over. And you know what, it feels a lot better than being an a-hole. And you'd be surprised how little it impacts your GPS arrival time to just be decent.

The driver exited and there happened to be two highway cops on the offramp. I’ve been driving trucks for 11 years, in the bunk right now. Truckers are neglected like slaves, expected to shut our mouths and keep hauling freight to facilitate the lives of ungrateful egotistical consumers and be hosts for parasites who haven’t driven a truck 1/10 of a mile. Bad infrastructure, demanding deadline, unhealthy lifestyle, unpaid time away from our families…. Bro it sounds like ur OTR but have you thought of local. I did OTR for 10 years then went local with food delivery service the last 10 years. I did just buy my own truck 4 months ago because of the injuries and surgeries I've had but I'll say I average 160k year gross with alot of overtime. I was making about 500 bucks a night. U were required to work ur 4 schedule days thats it. The other days if u came in u got a extra 230 dollars for working ur day off or u could work 7 days a week they didn't care. I just remember how much more money I made local vs OTR. I didn't have to deal with weight stations anymore because there where none on my routes. The trucks were already fueled up ready to go when u came in. Hell it doesn't have to be food delivery there's beverages like Coca-Cola or Pepsi even beer companies. Even grocery delivery trucks like Albertsons. Theres so many different things to haul and be home weekly. Or LTL companies Saia out here in California is paying $48 hour. Even old dominion drivers gross around $2,900 week out here. However the road drivers do run out of town so they gone 1 night then home a night. But they got P&D and ur home every night.

I started driving cross country in 1985 and made an excellent living doing it. I use to bring home around two grand a week after taxes back in the 1990's and loved what I did but then they changed the hours of service and my pay dropped drastically. That's when I said it's time to retire and it was the best decision I could have made. Absolutely no regrets!

I’m about to start CDL school and I’m nervous but excited. I hear a lot of truckers complaining about how hard the job is, and how bad the industry sucks right now, but I sold cars for over 20 years and I can tell you there is no harder job than customer service and sales. There’s nothing more stressful than dealing with people all day and having to cater to different personalities all the time. Add to that 10+ hour days, working on straight commission, no benefits and sometimes not having ANY days off….and working 70 hour weeks out on the road by myself with just my pets, seems like an absolute dream come true!

I was a long haul driver for 45 years doing over size and heavy haul .the best advice i can give is Safety first do that pre and post trip like religion .and every time you get out of the truck .You can never know when something might go bad .you will also notice you tire more quickly ,that's because you are making more decisions every second .this will pass .and get in the habit of looking left right out front and down stay aware of your surroundings at all times .good luck .They call me the Barbarian.

I had the choice to go back to school for a year or get my license and do long haul. Went back to school, got a union job, stable, paid OT after 35 hours, 7 hour workday, home every night, low stress, pension plan. I respect what truckers do but there is no way in hell I would work the hours they do and have that responsibility for such low pay. When you factor in your waiting and on duty time, you are probably working 70 to 80 hours a week. They need a strong union and instead of pay per mile, pay by hour. The old argument of if I pay a guy by the hour he will just go slow is BS. There is GPS, or GPS ability, on any truck and they can be monitored 24/7. If a guy is considerably slower than everyone else, or milking the system you will know it.

I'm one of the few lucky ones. I'm a truck driver, but I am also a unionized truck driver, stable, paid OT after 40 hours, home every night, pension, low stress, great benefits, but I am also the exception and it took me years to find this job. I am paid by the hour, and paid well and I will never go back to pay per mile. I also agree with you about milking the hours, nobody I work with milks a work day when they are paid fairly! You also nailed it about wait time and all the other bullshit that comes with it. If I wasn't as lucky as I am, regardless of how much I love driving, I would be looking at another career, but like I said luckily trucking hasn't been ruined for me and I can still enjoy my job and live a comfortable life.

Every crash/collapse brings with it an equivalent market chance if you are early informed and equipped, I've seen folks amass wealth amid economy crisis, and even pull it off easily in favorable conditions. That should be the least of your concern. Also explore the option of working with a CFA to reduce greatly your chances of loss.

When I was kid, my favorite TV shows were "Moving on", "BJ & the Bear" and movies like Smokey and the Bandit, Whiteline Fever. I wanted to be a truck driver when I grew up. When i was in my early 20's i dream about getting my CDL and hit the open road with a semi... However everything changed when i found out the amount of money i would have to spend to get it. And even worse the MISERABLE pay that comes with it. PLUS every single D.O.T,State Trooper and Dispatcher will make sure to take as MUCH as they can from your paycheck... @Alejandro Fallas It’s not that bad lol. I’ve been driving for 7 months. Getting my CDL only cost me 1000$ because I’m a veteran. The other guys in my class paid 3750$ and that money is taken out in payments. I’m averaging a little over 75k a year based on my pay from Jan 1st to now and I’m a rookie. After one year experience I can go work anywhere and easily make up to 100k plus as a company driver. I love this job

I disagree with that title, truck driving is not the worst job you could have I'm very happy doing what I do and I make pretty damn good money. Truck driving is not for everyone though just like any other job it has its ups and downs. It's important to figure out what field of trucking works best for you, local routes, over the road routes, tanker, flatbed, reefer, dry van, logging trucks tow trucks, cement trucks, dump trucks, car haulers, take your pick and see what you like.

Just go look at the average turnover rate in our industry and it might shed some light. I only say don't take your desk job for granted because I worked a few myself. They were monotonous and soul sucking, but I was safe and always had a place to eat, shower, and use the restroom. I'm not the type of person to downplay anyone's struggle, but it's delusional to not acknowledge the vast difference/difficulty of said struggles.

My manager had been on vacation which I now believe was possibly an unpaid suspension. Anyway, I decided I would bring my issues up with my bosses boss. Bad idea, I was suspended then fired. Those mega carriers offering “training” in exchange for a year of low pay or pay up if you leave early is the reason I opted out of getting my class A without paying for school. Ended up getting my class B with a school district with next to nothing spent on my training and no contract. Going to work as a bus driver that pays just about what entry level truckers make that do OTR work all while doing it in a bus. Trucking is where I want to go, but not as a slave to a big company that cares less about you.

The trucking industry held me for 4 months. I figured out quick that it's not worth working in an industry in need of such massive reform. "Debt peonage" couldn't be more accurate. "Indentured servitude" would be a good term for it as well. You would not believe how many of these companies try to get brand new drivers to lease trucks just to be indebted to the company. It's a predatory system that robs the workers of their livelihoods. Many of these people have little to no education and don't see it coming until they're underwater and out of options.

What used to be a filter, similar to a catalytic converter, is now a complex system that add cost of manufacture, cost of DEF, cost of maintenance and cost of repairs. @@keithdomin5015 The diesel engines of 20 years ago were dead simple, and dead reliable. You had a fuel pump, which acted like your distributor on a gas car, but instead of sending out spark, it sent out fuel. The more fuel it sent out, the more power you could get. Tuning was relatively simple, and easy enough for a local handyman to do. Now you need specialized components to such an extent, that if you dont have the troubleshooting software, your truck aint gonna move. Macks have a huge problem with their coolant level sensors. If the sensor goes out, it puts the truck in derate. If your coolant goes too low, it goes into derate. It doesnt tell you on the dash to check your coolant, it just shuts the engine off.

In my company our fleet of 10 2015 Mack trucks have the engine lights always on, they get fixed, and then a month later, it's back on. It's always an emissions component issue. One driver filled up the DEF tank with diesel on his truck accidentally, which rendered it inoperable and melted the exhaust system. So they got it emissions deleted and put it back in service, I took that truck as soon as it was deleted and it's the only truck that never has problems, and uses less fuel and has more power.

@@brandonfriesen5389 which is the truly messed up thing, is something that's meant to make the air cleaner, causes more diesel to be burnt. we got a brand new 2021 mack in, and just for kicks, wanted to see what the exhaust backpressure was. at idle, it was 5psi. in your car, it should be 0.5-1.5 depending on the car. my truck is 0.75 pre-cat, 0 after cat. to have 5psi means the truck has to work that much harder just to run

Part 2........ When you come to a stop to eat take a shower use the bathroom... Or you're waiting for your next load or your next destination..... When the truck has to have maintenance..... Or you get a flat tire..... You are not being paid.... You're not paid a lot in trucking to begin with...... if you're out on the road and you sleep overnight in the truck you're not paid for sleeping overnight in the truck..... And you might spend month after month out on the road that's why nobody likes to do 48 state OTR which means over the road.. You might see America but it isn't going to be the part of America that you want to go see.... By the time you're through subtracting all the time that you're not getting paid the amount of money that you are paid starts to look pretty damn sad and like the lady said..... In most cases you're below minimum wage..... For a highly skilled technical job that you cannot lose concentration of for an instant... Or people die.....

I watched the video started fairly but seemed to sympathize with the anti mask rally and I read some comments and it sparked me. I'm sorry but I want to keep this brief and will be my final comment. A lot of companies will promise unbelievable amounts to drive their trucks but in the end it is a gamble. Like I mentioned from a news email from my factoring company Walmart was pushing to increase their driver pay to like 130k a year due to driver shortages. Sounds petty nice. I have been a company diver, lease driver, and I have been operating under my own authority for 8 years now. I have been through some bad deals. For example I worked for CR England for 2 months including training and started their lease purchase program and by the end of month 2 I ended up owing them more than I had made so I bailed. 8 years later I was in a class action lawsuit I thought would go nowhere I was rewarded like 1900 bux due to how bad they screwed their lease drivers. My sister worked for Prime here recently and she seemed pretty happy with them but they do have a 63 MPH governor on their trucks. She did a lease for them. She still left them so IDK why or the situation if she was making so much why leave you know. I wish you the best of luck but remember this industry is a gamble especially now with fuel prices doing what they are doing. I can't find any place less than 5 a gallon in the state of Oklahoma. My load rates have not increased so it is at a cost to me. Mind you the roads and how bad of a condition they are in as well. Bad roads destroy big heavy trucks. It is nothing like a smaller passenger vehicle hitting a pot hole. These trucks are expensive and all the vibrations from bad roads vibrate and expose wiring which inhave had problems with on a 2015 model. I have spent just over 11k in repairs due to electrical shorts since I bought this truck about 3 years ago. There is much more but that is where I will leave it.

Get a ticket, and you're gone! Get an equipment violation at a scale, you're gone! Another Walmart see's you not wearing your seatbelt, you're gone! The money is real!! Just not worth the BS. I'll stick with my small company of 22 trucks, and not have to be on a leash. I make $55k a year, and take the winter months off. Im 23 and have been trucking for only a couple years. Personally i love the job itsself. Traveling, better money than i ever made before, and with that the ability to take care of my wife and our son. Unfortunately i did miss out on the days of outlaw truckers and my only glimpse of it is through my uncle. Despite everything wrong with the industry right now, i hope to be able to keep driving till i cant drive a truck any more or there are no trucks left to drive. Thank you to all you truckers out there that despite it all still take pride in what you do. There are many out there that dont and play a part in ruining the industry.

I drove truck for just 2 years. I developed a medical condition that prevents me from driving commercial vehicles. I had it easy. Regional Less-Than-Truckload (LTL). I was home every other night, was in a unionized (Teamsters) organization, had a lot of great benefits, never had to sleep in a truck (paid-for hotels) and all we had to do was drive trailers terminal-to-terminal. But I'm grateful for the experience and glad I got out of it. Not worth the headaches and frustrations.

It depends on what you do in truck driving. I'm a local driver home every day. I get thirty two dollars an hour. Work 50 Hours a week, sometimes a little more and i'm usually grossing 1800 to 2000. Truck driving is still a great job. Very easy to get into. A lot of companies still pay for your training.

I tried it for about two weeks. Worst job I ever had. I actually did the math. I was basically working 12-18 hr days (or longer) five days a week for what basically amounts to $3/hr. Long hours punctuated by a few hours of hard labor. Plus, your company basically forces you to break dot rules to stay on the roads and keep working, even if you're over your hours.

You’ll always hear the negatives in the industry, but you *can* make a career in trucking, and there are many ways to do it. Just find the niche that works for you, and always be working towards a goal. When you meet one, begin working towards another. I work at Sysco and grossed $109k last year, and worked long and hard for it, still do. But it’s because I have the goal of operating my own truck in the future. At that point, I run my own show and truck seasonally. Pursuing other interests and opportunities the rest of the time… Even if trucking isn’t your end goal in life - and it isn’t for many, it’s still a great way to get where you want to be. I’ve been trucking for the last three years, best career decision I’ve made so far.

This is true. I began trucking in January. This upcoming month will be my last month of doing OTR. I would leave right away, but I need a good reference… Long hours, many unaccounted unpaid work hours, low pay, no holiday extra pay, horrendous work/life balance. This is where the "trick" is..... I drove long-haul for 22 years - 18 of those years I lived in my truck. This can only really work if you are single. I never had a rent or mortgage payment for 18 years and managed to bank a nice amount of cash ! Of course, you have to adjust to living in a space the size of a closet, but I was always warm in the winter and cool in the summer - all on the company's dime. I had a regular routine, had a shower every day or every other day and my home terminal had washer and dryers for laundry. This is a career where you need to work SMARTER and learn how to make the most of what you have. I've been retired since 2017 and don't miss it at all. Glad that I found the best options.

It's pretty sad how trucking employers have gradually made the solid middle class potential of trucking as a career a thing of the past and truckers instead think mask mandates are somehow to blame . . . I mean the most prominent problems in the industry have been around for decades

I work with western express so many people abandon their trucks after being hired it's a shame, and yes I know why now and the thought did cross my mind .been solO for a month average check is $400 PER WEEK everything is a live load 3 to 4 hours per

My dad did it for 15 years. You simply don’t make enough , especially if your an owner/operator. You pay for literally everything out of pocket. I did a two week job with him one time. I knew I’d never do this job. Edit: this was in the late 90’s to early 2010’s and he worked for Schneider

My dad is also an Owner operator he is making over $100k. Your dad most likely was using a broker who was screwing him over. It was like that for us too until I started finding the loads for him, and saw how much more we were making

@@-SP. yea im not in this industry yet but from what I can gather most people are "fake" owner ops. where they just own the truck but not the actual full business and operations. if you want to truly be a owner op you need to take all the normal business and paper work and do it your self. just curious. could you give more of a breakdown on those earnings? is that after paying the truck off or including truck payments. also is that including or not medical insurance. because if you are at a legit company you get their insurance and if u go at your own you would have to make a decent bit more for it to be the same. what are his hours. is he lilterally just no lifeing it like hes at a prison work camp or is it an very good work life balance and chill.

@@mayainverse9429 Those are his earnings after his expenses. His annual revenue is a little over $200k. Truck payment is around $1100/month, Trailer $800/month, Insurance $2200/ month. Fuel is hard to calculate right now since prices are increasing every day. As for medical insurance, since his company is set up as an S corp he needs to pay a certain amount, but we mainly get our health insurance through my mom's employer who offers family plans. He's usually home like 2-3 days a week before he leaves again. Load rates are pretty shitty right now though, around this time last year we were averaging close to $3.50 per mile but most of the loads now are paying closer $2.50. His income is most likely going to be a lot less this year, especially with the higher gas prices.

I started off as an over the road truck driver for MS Carriers back in 1998. When Swift took over the company I quit. At MS Carriers we got a $100 bonus each time we went into NYC. That ended when Swift bought the company in 2001. I left two days later. A $1200 a week job amounts to $7.95 per hour when you factor in how many hours you are in that truck. I can not recommend to anyone to remain in that industry. The way you are treated makes it not worth it.
