I think what #16 implies that is relevant in our time is, we collect so much technique(weapons), that even if we don't need it we practice it even though it isn't really that useful. This actually cleared my mind about what I'm about to learn in software engineering, because in coding, there are many ways you can solve a problem using algorithms and data structures, but not all are useful or even relevant depending on what you specialize or the situation you are in. The same can be implied on different disciplines, industry, skills, etc. It actually makes sense. "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." -Bruce Lee

Rule #16 speaks about not learning flashy and pretty techniques, but techniques that are useful and effective. In that regard Musashi was very much like Bruce Lee. He was very critical of many schools of martial arts that practiced and taught pretty techniques, that weren't that useful in combat. He would discard everything that's not practical and stick to what worked the best. That is not to say, we shouldn't appreciate the beauty, he was an artist himself, but when it comes to practical aspects of life, like martial arts and swordsmanship (or coding), he was practicing and learning only most effective things. It's the same as Seneca's advise on reading - he advocated reading few, time tested and best authors and their books many times over, rather than reading many books from many writers just to be able to say that you read so many different positions.

Rule #1 is the most commonly mistranslated rule though. If you check the translation by real experts ie. William Scott Wilson and Kenji Tokitsu, this rule speaks about, to put it into simple words, accepting the old customs of the world. That is, not to confirm to societal norms and social pressures, but at the same time not to discard, and go against traditions and customs. Speaking of inconsistencies in the video, Musashi was NOT a samurai, but ronin. Two seemingly similar, but completely different ways of life. I appreciate that the author exposes people to the Dokkodo and Musashi, but doing a little more research on the topic would be great. This seems very surface level, and hence incorrect in many places.

lewLewis that is an interesting view point. Miyamoto was a ronin and lived by a code one which was based off virtue not the strongest survive. With solitude comes peace, remove all attachments and distractions and all you're left is the freedom to choose. I'm not saying become antisocial but too abide by a code that aligns with you and from there you'll have found peace within yourself. Peace comes from the internal(YOU) not the external ( social construct). To let someone to tell you what PEACE is you have lost power. This is just my perspective not the truth.

04:50 'In all things, have no preference' - this one is so true and underrated. People are so ideological nowadays, and as soon as they're exposed to something that doesn't subscribe to their already established narratives, it's their gut instinct to reject it.

So a person isn't allowed to have an opinion or be correct? No preference allowed? Something drove you to prefer to type a statement out, you didn't just decide to stay silent willy nilly.

I was shocked to see just how many of these rules paralleled my own thoughts and beliefs ... my favorite confirmation was "19 respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help". Thank you for this... your image selection, and soothing tone of voice made this video a pleasant discovery.

I liked most of these. The Disciplined Pursuit of Less "Essentialism" by Greg McKeown, is how I lived for 8 years. Off grid and living free of wants or needs. The Freedom of choice for time and place helped develop my inner bliss. These were my warrior years.

Do not be guided by the feeling lust or love. Love is a distraction, you will get distracted by the person who u love. And you can't concentrate on what you are doing. There is a chapter in vagabond where miyamoto can't concentrate on his training, and he constantly thinking about the girl he left on his village.

I like the vid very much, Thank you! Anyway- there's a thing I can't accept fully, though I may not be living by this rules nowadays- if you want to follow the path of Miymoto Musashi- you can't ignore even one of the principles- especially number 10- it might be a positive feeling, but don't let yourself be guided by love is actually a practical rule(which you've pointed as well), we're all some kind of warriors or soldiers, love is usually misunderstood and many confuse love with lust, not once I have tried to explain it's a different thing to some friends- but they confuse it nevertheless, even if they understand me at the moment of speaking, they fall in love and love the lust itself, along with their loved one and usually such people can't feel any love beyond that pattern, or at least not fully- they stick to the primary emotions and cannot rise above them, so they're much more attracted to the lusty nature of what they call love, instead of for example enlightenment and lust for knowledge, or understanding, even in a person as the example goes. Defying this rule, no matter how unpleasant it will sound to the most nowadays would be a mistake from my perspective and watching this vid made me realize I have actually followed a very similar perspective to yours, but now I'd meditate on some of these words once again and observe what I am at the present moment, giving new perspectives and opening new corridors of reality- realizing a mistake is the best way to improve afterall!

I started fasting, not only food wise but dopamine too. And the first thing I noticed is I'm extremely bored! I wake up, don't know what to do with myself until 5pm when my first meal is scheduled, then by 7pm I can't wait to go to sleep because I don't have anything more to do... Now I see clearly my life was only about food and entertainment. I can't wait for my brain to reset and to get motivated to be productive because I can already see how much time I have everyday to be producive!
