Hearing about how you should be like water reminded me of some of Bruce Lee's words. I think it was "be like water, my friend, formless, shapeless. Water being poured into a cup becomes the shape of the cup." I wonder if he got it from Musashi.

Inflicting pain to another will always cause one to have anxiety and fear--so has nothing to do with the Tao and going with the Flow. Chinese Taoists and Confucians clearly implemented "Empathy" (Ren) as a universal virtue--so harming or killing another would be like harming or killing yourself. This is why Taoist fled to the mountains to live like hermits (while Buddhists fled to monasteries). It was only the Confucians who attempted to live in society and attempt to change government policies to avoid war and conflict (mostly without success). This correlates with the virtues held by the Stoics and most mystics (Eastern and Western).

This comment is very ignorant. Your lack of understanding of the martial way is the main impediment to seeing the connection. You are simplifying the way of the warrior to "inflicting pain to another". That's a surface and uneducated outlook. You are also either ignoring or are ignorant of the many Chinese martial arts that have direct Taoist origins. Taoism is not synonymous with pacifism. Nor is stoic philosophy which is clear when you take into account one of the most famous of the stoics Marcus Aurelius who not only initiated/sanctioned wars as emperor of Rome but also was a trained wrestler. Educate yourself and try again.

Founder of Stoicism Zeno was a student of Crates and Diogenes--Cynics who lived homeless and poor in the streets of Athens. Tracing their linage back to Pythagoras--a vegan who couldn't stand to hurt animals, let alone other people. Your ignorance is you are confusing the beliefs of the "common" people with the views of the Philosophers themselves. The highest calling for a Taoist, Confucianist, and Stoic was to become a Sage--and possess virtue and serene joy (ataraxia). Love and Compassion being part of this virtue. Over all I think this is a great video but we must understand, Musashi was a Buddhist, not a Taoist. To be sure, he knew of and possibly even held some Taoist principles but these are two very different practices and should not be confused. Many of the principles of Taoism & Buddhism seem to be similar and generally point us to the same destination. But these philosophies are quite different. Taoism is much, much older, dating back far more than 7000yrs. And if you look closely at the two traditions you will see that Taoist practice will take you much closer to the Divine Source.

The Tao ☯️ of St Paul and Jesus.. and Love Almighty's suggestions for the Christians having a Right ( and Responsibility) to going back to being Sacred again ( after Constantine's desperate deal with God Almighty) . It seems SOME forms of Zen and Chan type Buddhisms CAN be used as Man's common ground religions in these generation's leader's responsibilities to find some cultural common ground for Man and Humanity to work in.
