The following is an interview with Temple Grandin, a well known author and person with autism who was featured on an HBO special several years ago, and agreed to be interviewed by Dr. Harrington for our Insights Into Autism meeting. The interview centers on COVID 19 and children and families dealing with autism. She provides great advice and reflections on her struggles with autism and how she overcame many of the features of autism to become the successful person she is today.

Dr Grandin, Thank you! I'm watching all your videos and feel like I've discovered a gold mine! I'd beg you to have people consider a little further the diagnosis of a child before deciding that five (5) medications are "too many." It sounds like a lot and I get it! But, sometimes students are not sleepy in class, I found out eventually, because the child could not sleep EVEN with a strong medication. I had not previously known until I raised a blessed angel with autism and tourettes syndrome who could not be knocked out! Later in the morning the he would finally become drowsy, but that was when everyone else was waking up! I realized the medication had not ever kicked in effectively and he was falling asleep because he finally pooped out. And of course, yes, the team has to be careful not to over dose! But finding the combination of meds that would help induce sleep when appropriate for us was not easy. So we were managing sensory processing disorder, ticks, mood swings, anxiety and near paralyzing fear, and other symptoms that included dyslexia and some learning challenges. Only a year and a half prior he lost one of his grandfather after a couple years of illness. That caused symptoms to show up. But then his mother moved with him out of town to a bad situation. He was harmed. So when he came back home (to maternal g'ma) I had to let him stay as all of his symptoms hit him at once and he became suicidal. Medications, as im certain you appreciate, saved his life. I'll take the side effects any day. It has been one long journey! I wouldn't trade helping him carry his burden for anything unless it helped him more. So yeah, I'm irrationally crazy about him. Thanks for reading this. Just wanted to share with you our situation and how mistaken I had been regarding meds in students in the classroom coming is super sleepily. Love your videos---and you!
