Kate is so insanely talented and such a unique artist. This is my favorite song of all time, it's just hauntingly beautiful. You have to watch the video, both versions, but the white dress version is my favorite. She's so captivating. You will definitely fall in love with her. In the beginning she sang very high-pitched and was very theatrical, but then she got more experimental and created the most mind-blowing music you will ever hear. She's an extremely versatile artist, I love all her eras. I'm so excited for you!

I absolutely *adore* Kate Bush, and I loved this reaction. It's interesting that you remark on what a bold and unexpected choice this was as a first single, as she had to battle the record company over this decision! They wanted to release James And The Cold Gun as the first single, as it's a (somewhat) more conventional rock song. Her strength of will at such a young age was extraordinary - and obviously she was completely vindicated! The second single is the absolutely *gorgeous* ballad The Man With The Child In His Eyes, which would make a great second reaction.

1977 -78 in the UK saw the rise of punk rock with bands like the Sex Pistols climbing the charts. Punk was the 'big thing' at the time...then this landed from nowhere. She wrote this in 1977 and it topped the UK singles charts the following year, a huge international hit & introduced the force of talent that is Kate Bush.

Kate was singing as the ghost of Cathy Earnshaw, the character in Wuthering Heights by Bronte, hence the desire to sound a little ethereal. Kate's songs all sound very different, so don't assume that they all sound like this. The Kate Bush journey is a fascinating and at times bewildering one, but very worthwhile. There are plenty of gems to be discovered.

Kates high pitched voice was to reflect the fact she was singing as Cathys spectre lost on the wild moors of Northern England. Very atmospheric . Kates a genius but not always easy to access and certainly isn't going to be everyone's taste ,like the wuthering heights novel itself. You either 'get it ' or not.

You DID it. You've discovered Kate Bush! I first heard her in 1993 while working with a friend who played a few of her albums and I was hooked for a long time. The song you played was written by her before her 20th birthday. She has a wide range of topics she covers, like a woman who tests her husband's loyalty in "Babooshka" to young men gone to war in "Army Dreamers". You must have heard "Running Up That Hill". Listen to her vocal range in "In The Warm Room" or "Them Heavy People", a song about the brilliant writers she read growing up. While I have you heard, please give another female artist, songwriter, pianist named Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. "Girl Anachronism " and "Coin Operated Boy " are good starts. There is nothing to compare them to.

Several years later, when she released her Best Of album "The Whole Story", Kate re-recorded her vocal for this. One prepares themselves for this kind of thing--how can you top the original? But she did it, and the 2nd vocal version is just as strong if not stronger.

I will add that Kate wrote "The Man With the Child in His Eyes" when she was only 13 years old. The song received the Ivor Novello award for "Outstanding British Lyric" in 1979.

I read a quote from the engineer of the record who regretted not raising the volume of the guitar solo during the outro. You'll notice it is rather low in the mix when it ought to really be taking a lead (in a similar way to the guitar solo of Goodbye To Love by The Carpenters does). He kept it lower in the mix because he wasn't convinced about the song's merits and didn't think it deserved the extra effort. An attitude that he admitted and now regrets.

Haunting, beautiful, bursting with talent, didn't put up with extended record label bullsh*t, perfect package. & her bottom lip certainly brightened this boy's life when he was a young pup. So far as to say I would have cheerfully crawled naked across two miles of burning desert sand strewn with broken glass & used syringes just to touch a plastic bag that might have once contained her knickers. like a lot of people she mistakes the love affair between Heathcliffe and Kathy as real love. It isn't. It's a failed love, it's a disgrace. Wuthering Heights the novel isn't about love it's about revenge and darkness. Heathcliffe isn't a dark moody romantic hero, he's a totally evil bastard, he does everything he can to ruin the lives of everyone around him. This is not a love story, it's a hate story.

Kate recorded this song at least 2 more times, each one better than the last. This is the first and worst. Her voice is very screechy here, like an owl. The latest version is on her greatest hits album The Whole Story (1986). Her voice was more mature, controlled and mellow. The screech is gone.

No, that guitar solo is performed by Ian Bairnson, who also played on most "The Alan Parson Project" albums next to Kate's first three (IIRC) albums. He just died on Good Friday last month at the age of 69. R.I.P. Sorry for that late answer! ;-)
