Inspecting a Leaking Johnson / Evinrude V4 Lower Unit

I had to go through the lower unit on my 1962 75 hp years ago. I had to replace the needle bearings just below the water pump. I had to replace a bushing that is pressed or locktited over the drive shaft for said needle bearings to ride on. I worked at a machine shop & they helped me with this. Mine is the first year of Selectic Shift & I converted it to direct drive. I have been using it for about 28 years. I run only in fresh water. I have not replaced the water impeller in years, but make sure it pumps water good each year before taking out. I put in a cut down 50.gallon drum for testing each spring. I purchased an over heat light &.buzzer combination from Home Depot online, before I just had an overheat light. Yes - Home Depot sells boat stuff & price is less than boat store - there is no shipping charge if you pick up at store. I have no affiliation with Home Depot! Anyway, each year I change the lower unit gear oil & it looks like new. I always use new nylon washers on the drain plug as was recommended by the factory.

I have a 2008 evinrude 150 etec, when tilted in the up position I get a small amount of oil from the weep hole. I assume the main shaft seal under the water pump needs replacing. I watched your video, is pulling the lower unit off and repairing as easy as your motor. Thanks for the video, me the "novice" want to do my own work... but scared too.

Having to work on my lower unit that has some gears gone bad. Like you the last step is froze up....the prop shaft/forward gear and gear changing unit is stuck. I've tried jiggle, banging etc. I believe some shaving (again bad gears) have maybe wedged themselves between the gear and the housing.... any thoughts on getting this out. This is basically an education tear apart.....any parts that are good I may put on ebay, but other than that I don't plan to reassemble... Great video!

Thanks a lot. But what about the drive shaft bearing inside the housing and the bearing behind the forward gear? I wish you could show us how they are. In some cases after removing drive shaft, a lot of needle bearing drop down. And when trying to remove the forward gear, also all needle bearings fall apart. Let us know how a new bearing looks like. Is there a seal on water pump shaft, I’m leaking water

We have a 96' Evinrude 60hp. We just got all new gears put in, with all new seal kit, and a water pump kit. We're getting water into the lower unit, and gear oil is leaking out somehow. We also have metal shavings still coming out whenever we change the fluid, which we've done about 4 or 5 times so far. Our last gears were pretty grinded up. We had a local mechanic do the job for us. I have the lower unit all apart and the gear oil drained. I'm not sure what to do from here to check seals or how I can find out where the water is going in and out. Two times we had the boat sit in the lake, I went back and saw gear oil all in the water, and the motor was out of the water. So it's leaking out somewheres, and it don't seem to be the oil screws, I don't think. What do I do, and what could be causing oil to leak out when the motor is tilted out of the water? and water getting in... And how do we go about getting all the metal shavings out? the screw magnet does pull some how, but not until the motor runs a minute and after we drain it again.

Need a pressure tester to fine the leek. As far as some minor shavings, its not unusual.How much we taking here? Also, new gears need to be shimmed. Did the shop do this?

There was no o ring between the wear plate and the impeller in the water pump... would this cause this? I just got one that seemed to fit the shaft good and put it back together.

no, not all water pumps use that O-ring

Thanks Brandin. On an 87 Johnson 120 Pulled prop shaft seal carrier as fishing line took our seals There is lots of movement side to side and front to back. Is that normal. Thanks.
