Rick, remove all rust from steel under trailer down to bare metal, prime , paint, then undercoat. Treat all wood with old motor oil. I have been in the welding and blacksmith business for over fifty years. This rust will get worse as time goes on, and repair will be very expensive, if not impossible. John

The broken wire was to the driver's side electric brake actuator. I don't think Rick's brakes were working on that side. The rust was very superficial, I told Rick I he should knock of the loose rust and coat it with POR-15. Otherwise, the trailer was in great shape. And Rick is an even nicer guy in person. He started whipping me into shape and nealy single handedly straightened out my garage. I'm lucky to call him my friend.

Those wires that you fixed, I would assume they go to the tail lights or inside the trailer. Personally I would zip tie them away from the wheels that probably caused them to break. Possibly the bulbs are out in the back unless you have verified the lights work.

I have the same trailer and was under it looking for the vin. Power washed it while I was there. My VIN sticker on the side of the trailer faded and can't get it registered. It wasn't a big deal in NM but just moved to PA so hopefully since I bought a new metal plate I can. There's supposed to be the last several digits of the VIN stamped on the frame somewhere. Never could find that.

I would rather you do not jack using that method, it introduces a few too many variables IMO, keep it simple. You guys did a good job, however it can be very easy to shake hands with danger at times. Possibly find some solid timber sleepers (like railway type sleepers) wider than they are high (even stack two high - places on solid ground or concrete) and tow or reverse the trailer wheels up on to them, use a creeper board or just slide on underneath. The angle iron crossmembers at about 18" spacing is good, they only have surface rust, animal urine etc corrodes steel. The air gap between the timber floor boards helps stop the timber trapping moisture etc and rotting. Lanolin provides a good protective coating. Are the loose wires off the electric drum brake unit?

As long as the boards are 2x and are on a 16" max between the supports, that should be fine to support the horses. It's what's recommended for load bearing beams on decks. Which is kind of what that is, but covered in metal box. No different from 2 groups of 6 200 lb guys standing huddled next to each other on a deck.

Rule #1 don’t ask an aircraft maintenance inspector to tell you if we see anything. Lol 😂 #2. If your gonna keep or need your trailer for 3 or more years, you might think about selling it now and rubberizing the new one. U- bolts on the leaf springs looked rough. Didn’t catch how old the trailer is. I’ll go back and listen again but I don’t think you mentioned it. I also noticed some urine damage on the wood boards and the metal framing. We have run into that on airplanes when we ship horses. I used to work the horse charter 727 from Lexington Kentucky to Miami every year pretty cool gig but it was a constant Pee inspection. And the corrosion on the aluminum is a nightmare! Anyway, your board should hold up pretty good as long as you have another floor piece across them on the top. I never really paid attention that on your other video’s but I will look through your other videos again and see if I can tell what kind of floor panel you have on top of your boards. The rust converter stuff sounds OK except you can’t get it on the part where the boards rest so you would just be making it look pretty instead of fixing it or completely stopping the rust . I already know your axle ends are good because I seen your video where you lubed and packed /check the bearings. Kudos to you for that by the way LOL everybody always forgets about them! I’ll re-watch this video again on a bigger screen 📺 And may edit my post if I find anything drastic. 📌Definitely think about changing out the U-boats on the axle at the leaf springs. Edit 📌Those wires you hooked up should be for your brakes LOL if not they could go up into the compartment for lighting which May or may not be used. Also I would consider changing the hardware bolts on your equalizer. That’s the piece that connects the two sets of springs together in the Middle between your front and rear tire on each side. Along with changing the hardware bolts on each end of the leaf springs. Hope that helps. 🐴🐴🦅

@danward64 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThinkLikeAHorse wow! Looks really good for 15 years old! Just shows you What keeping it under cover can do. I looked at a couple of your videos all I could see was just a rubber mat over top of your floor. So I don’t know if you have any metal or any kind of flooring over top of your boards. If it’s just a rubber mat, you may want to roll the rubber back whenever you wash it out to make sure it dries out thoroughly. Also obviously to check the boards. You may also consider putting down a sheet of aluminum or a sheet of plywood over the area where the horses stand to disperse the Weight evenly across the boards. You can check the angle iron braces underneath with a ball peen hammer. Take the Peening part of the hammerTo wrap on the angle iron. Be careful, rust particles will fly where goggles! If you find a weak spot or punch a hole through one the rest of the angle iron will be in the same shape it just hasn’t shown up yet. That will give you an indication of how far along the angle iron has deteriorated underneath of the boards. 📌I also forgot to mention in your video, there is some wires that go through a channel in the back of your trailer underneath. Anywhere the wires transverse through a channel opening or hole you should wrap electrical tape, or put some type of chafing wrap So that your wires don’t wear against the open hole edges, and cause a short. I’m surprised that one I seen didn’t already do that. I think those are the wires to your tail lights. Anyhow, I would check all of your wiring especially for a trailer at this age. If you do decide to change out the boards you will have quite a bit of work to do. They are probably held in place By A steel piece of flat bar in the front and one in the back. You will have to cut the weld on either end to remove the flat iron. Depending on how everything is mounted to the floor this could turn into a nightmare. So go through the motions visually of doing that task before you actually do it to see what you would have to disassemble. My guess is quite a bit. However if the boards are solid on the tops as well as the bottoms and your cross beams are solid you should be good for a while. 📌 I looked, but I couldn’t tell if your levelers had grease fittings or not some do some don’t. So you might check that. ❗️📌 and once again I would definitely consider changing the hardware out that I mentioned above. Axle U bolts and bolt hardware for your springs and hardware for your levelers/Equalizer. When you change the bolts out of your spring ends, Make sure the holes in the spring ends are not worn out or pitted too deep. 🐴🐴🦅

If you are looking to just adjust them, it’s exactly like adjusting drum brakes on a car. There is usually an oval rubber grommet on the backing plate. Take that out and you can either use a spoon tool (it’s basically a bent wide screwdriver) or a screwdriver. Then using one of those tools you turn the star wheel inside until you start to hear the brakes scrape the drum as you roll the wheel.
