Thank you so much for your video. I have a horse but no trailer yet so this is very informative for me especially since I'm new to the trailering part of the horse world. Never owned a horse until recently so I found no reason to own a trailer and now that I have one, I find out I need one. Also a Rick Gore referral and I thank you and appreciate your videos.
@brsnorthernhorsejourney35793 жыл бұрын
Until late 2019 we didn't own a trailer either, this was a very worthwhile investment both for independence (previously we would "hitch a ride" with friends who had a larger trailer to go to the occasional show) and having it available in the event of an emergency vet visit or similar being necessary.

When matching hitch ball weight capacity to weight of trailer do you need to take into consideration the animal's weight? Great video. I have seen some scarey looking trailer hookups. This helps me understand and evaluate when traveling. Also a Rick Gore referral. Happy trails!
@brsnorthernhorsejourney35793 жыл бұрын
Yes, the animal's weight must be taken into consideration as well as any other items carried in trailer like tack, water, etc. Your trailer's information decal will have a number on it with a GVWR prefix. GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating which is the maximum weight of trailer itself, animals, and any of the additional items mentioned above. By using the trailer's GVWR as your baseline, and ensuring all other ratings (towing capacity of vehicle, hitch, drawbar, ball, and trailer coupler at least meet (and preferably exceed) the trailer's GVWR you will be on the "right side" of the numbers. Empty weight of a horse trailer can vary widely depending on size, configuration (horse only, horses + tack room, living quarters etc.), and construction material. The only way to know your trailer's actual empty weight is to weigh it on a commercial scale.

Hi! Rick from Think like a horse recommended your video. Excellent information. Thank you for posting. Oh...I have a question. Do you have a preference regarding a "manual" gauge or a digital gauge?
@brsnorthernhorsejourney35793 жыл бұрын
I prefer a good manual gauge. Usually they are calibrated in 2 psi increments which is accurate enough, and no battery required!

Huh, i never new trailer axles where solid, always assumed they where free spinning. Thanks for the info, dig the channel. Also, whats hour opinion of reese hitches with the little stabilizer bars?
@brsnorthernhorsejourney35793 жыл бұрын
Good point, "solid" is a bit of a misnomer. The hubs on either end of trailer axle are separate, so inner and outer wheels can turn at different speeds while cornering, but there is no steering which is where the sideways "tire scrub" comes from. Hitches with stabilizer bars (often called "weight distributing hitch" or "equalizer hitch" by the manufacturers) seem to be more common on RV's, I have not seen them on many horse trailers in my experience. This article, while obviously intended to encourage purchase of their weight distributing hitch, does point out that ratio of tow vehicle to trailer weight is a factor to consider. www.fastwaytrailer.com/blog/should-i-use-a-ball-mount-or-weight-distribution-hitch Our full size pickup + trailer combination rides level and tows steady with the ball mount hitch. If towing with a smaller pickup or SUV a weight distributing hitch may be necessary however it is important to remember that it isn't just about how much the tow vehicle can pull, it is also about how well you can stop!

Good info. Thanks. I have to buy new tires for my horse trailer. Do they need to be trailer tires or can I get away with car/truck tires?
@brsnorthernhorsejourney35793 жыл бұрын
I would say a definite "no" to car tires (their size designation begins with the letter P, for example P225/65R15) as these are not designed for the weight and side loading a trailer's tires are subjected to. LT (Light Truck) vs. ST (Special Trailer) tires is a topic that often generates debate. This article, while written with RV's in mind, has good information regarding the difference between LT and ST tires: rvingwithmarkpolk.com/2012/11/08/trailer-towing-st-tires-vs-lt-tires/ Technical article from TireRack.com on trailer tires: www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=309 My opinion is that your trailer's tires should be replaced with trailer (ST) tires because they are specifically designed for the application.
@leadfootmama3 жыл бұрын
@@brsnorthernhorsejourney3579 This is awesome info! I just bought the horse trailer and the tires are worn from sitting outside. They are p235/75R15 So, what I'm hearing from you is I have car tires on it now? Wow! Glad I need to replace them or I would have thought they were trailer tires and they're fine. Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
@brsnorthernhorsejourney35793 жыл бұрын
@@leadfootmama p235/75R15 is definitely a car tire as p stands for passenger. A trailer tire of similar size would have an ST prefix. Look for a decal labelled "Tire and Loading Information" or something similar on your trailer, this will provide the correct tire size, load range, and inflation pressure as specified by trailer manufacturer.
