As a kid I saw a little bit of _Get Smart._ I remembered that he was a dumb secret agent, but I just watched every episode of the show last year, and there's a lot more going on than just one guy who's dumb. Every aspect of the spy world was played for laughs. The gadgets the agents were provided with were ridiculous, the agency, Control, was so super secret that no one was supposed to know about it, yet at the same time everyone knew about it. The evil plots were needlessly complicated, the murders were just weird. (Drowning a person in a phone-booth, and turning someone into mannequin for instance.) There was a death struggle between the good guys, Control, and the bad guys, Kaos, yet at times they put aside their differences to, say, atend a funeral for a double agent were they split the expenses 50-50, since he was technically working or both of them. There were so many spy phrases and secret passwords and double agents that agents on both sides can't keep it all straight. It wasn't just one dumb guy, the whole situation was ridiculous. Smart himself was- it's like he put all his points into spycraft, and because of that he was lacking common sense. He wasn't always an idiot, a lot of times he was, but very often he was put in absurd scenarios where his antics actually make sense.

Fun fact, Dr. Claw is voiced by Frank Welker. If you don't know what his works are, look him up. If you grew up watching cartoons in the 1960s to even 1990s, you will no doubt have encountered him in countless roles. Actually, I just watched the part 2 section where you had mentioned him. But yeah, his portfolio goes back to to The Jetsons and Scooby (he has voiced Freddy Jones in most of Scooby cartoons, including the parody on Family Guy).

I am surprised about the oversight that James made by not knowing that MAD is actually an acronym: it stands for "Mean And Deceitful". Anyway, I watched this series quite a lot when I was very little, both with an English and a Finnish dub. Even though I couldn't understand a word from the English version, I still enjoyed watching it. Although, it always annoyed me when Gadget's message mysteriously exploded and it was never explained why.
