Inspector Morse is a British detective drama television series based on a series of novels by Colin Dexter. It starred John Thaw as Chief Inspector Morse and Kevin Whately as Sergeant Lewis.
The theme and incidental music for the series was written by Barrington Pheloung and uses a motif based on the Morse code for "M.O.R.S.E.", starting with the opening notes and recurring all the way through.

This piece always fills me with nostalgia almost to the brink of tears. Nostalgia for the series; for John Thaw and other excellent actors who are sadly gone; for the great Barrington Pheloung, who captured the essence of the character in these 3+ minutes and thus composed the best TV score ever written, and nostalgia for the XXth century, which, with all its defects, is where I still belong.

now I dislike being sappy so I'll most likely deny having typed this but, I have similar feelings about some things and what I can advise for whatever it is worth is, don't think of it as belonging to a different time, think of it as being a surviving peace of that time that exists in the now so that the youngsters can learn a bit about things that have come to pass....

AlbertoVO5 You need to get your hands on the original starring the late John Thaw as Morse, just as great, if not better. From the very first episode, Dead of Jericho which was broadcast on Jan 7 th 1987 ( filmed 1986), and Morse saying to Lewis “ I’m a different kettle of fish, Lewis “ - viewers knew they were on a winner with this series. A lot of great con stars also: Patrick Troughton, Gemma Jones, Sir Michael Hordern, Gwen Taylor, Patricia Hodge to name but a few. Although sometimes Endeavor connects some of its plot lines with the original series, it isn’t a patch on the original format. So I do highly recommend getting the original on DVD.

The best detective novels I've read. I usually pick up a book after work and sit in a pub and order a pint and some snacks for an hour or so. I picked up Colin Dexter's Morse and I'd been there four hours and kicked out. I read all the way home on the bus. Dexter has a unique style of making the mundane exciting. Plus making Morse a drunk, lecherous antihero. John Thaw was a genious choice for the live action. You got the sense he had gone through the wringer. Lewis was his sounding board.

@@Marklovesdrama Exactly. The only downside of Endeavour is that the actor who plays him looks nothing like John Thaw did at that age (you can see him in old episodes of the 60s crime series 'Redcap'). Of course that doesn't really matter as he's playing Morse, not John Thaw, but it would have been nice if there was more of a resemblance.

You have expressed my sentiments entirely. It would seem that John F has the answer; reality TV is cheap and the results speak for themselves. The unfortunate thing is that there are enough intellectually challenged individuals tuning in to this muck to convince the producers that they can get away with it. You will notice that all these programmes have one thing in common - Crying!. The evidence is there: Bake a cake; someone ends up crying. Refurbish a house; someone ends up crying. Lose weight: someone ends up crying. Talent show; someone ends up crying, Go on a date; someone ends up crying, etc. etc. ....................

How does he do that? Is it Morse code? Sorry if I'm being stupid 😂
@adamsbja
@adamsbja 3 жыл бұрын
@@classicmusician700 Yes. The dots and dashes at the start spell out M-O-R-S-E and if you listen carefully the sound of that message blends into and becomes the support rhythm of the theme proper once it starts rolling.

Interesting fact: occasionally the morse code was changed to spell out the name of the killer or a red herring.

The guy who wrote this also composed the music for the video game 'Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars.' Unsurprisingly, it's some of the best music ever written for a game.

I find the Inspector Morse Theme song wonderful but painfully sad because John Thaw is no longer with us. I love his character! I think, also, that Shaun Evans is the perfect young Morse - Endeavor......a great actor and so handsome!

WNED is showing Inspector Morse again during the pandemic and I am mesmerized by the music to no end, heavenly, hunting and penetrating! Not to mention the character of Morse. A classy man with the love for music and opera. God bless John Thaw's soul who was able to manifest so much artistry in his work. I love the fact that he is limping a bit! Made everything so much more real! like life.

I heard this on Classic FM the other day. Only then, after many years, did I realise that there is a morse code style theme running through it. the connection with Inspector Morse then became clear. I still remember the episode in which he's driving, and the passenger pulls a knife on him. Gripping drama indeed!

John Thaw a legend always. I always remember the Driven to distraction episode with awesome actors like David Ryall. Patrick Malahide. Mary Jo Randle. I often drive to Oxford and see places that bring back memories of the show. John Thaw RIP. Ted Childs legend also.

I didn’t realize the Morse Code inclusion until I saw this video. It’s such a beautiful rather melancholy piece that befits our dear Morse. I do enjoy the Endeavour version where there’s more emphasis on the first portion. I enjoy it when you hear bits of it in different episodes. Rip to both John Thaw and Barrington Pheloung
