For many years, Becky felt overwhelmed by the severity of her narcolepsy symptoms. Due to years lacking sleep and resources to help her, the basic functions of life became too much and Rebecca attempted to end her life.
By chance, the doctor on call that night in the emergency room specialized in sleep medicine and began to see Becky. With a couple years of intense support and treatment, Becky began to accept narcolepsy as part of her life and has been inspired to help others living with it.
Becky is determined to raise awareness and understanding of narcolepsy, and to improve the lives of others living with this rare disorder. She created the first Canadian Narcolepsy Awareness Programs and Services (NAPS) group, as well as a weekly peer support group. She is also initiating the first Canadian Narcolepsy Awareness Day (March 7, 2018) and Ottawa’s “Suddenly Sleepy Saturday” (March 10, 2018).
She speaks publicly about her experiences to create awareness and inspire change.
