When were the books of the Bible written? Did they have more than one author? Were they written over a long period of time? If so is that a problem for biblical authority?

Use of scribes makes sense to me. As a volunteer in a college ministry, my mentor couldn't write a coherent paper to save his life. For a couple years every letter, article, report and announcement that bore his name was actually me. His ideas. His final approval. But it was my writing.

I thank God for you and all your work. One of the most neglected aspects of our Biblical interpretations these days is the cultural context of the books of the Bible, especially when it comes to the Old Testament. 99% of the attacks on our faith and the supposed discrepancies between science and the Bible can be resolved when we examine the Scriptures in their historical, literary, and cultural contexts, rather than viewing them through a modern scientific literary reading of the English translations. Michael Heiser and John Walton are heroes of the faith and don't fall victim to protecting lay people from their Bibles or special pleading like so many other apologists do.

Indeed the religion with Allah (God) is Islam. I love Jesus and all prophets. Now please answer my question I will now provide questions. Is there any verse where Jesus claims himself he’s god? If Jesus is god, then how did god die when he could’ve just forgave us? Why did Jesus say along the words of I’m not god? (I didn’t exactly say what Jesus said but he said it along the words similarly)

@@thequran5542 what's up bro?! May the Lord bless you & I! Thanks for your questions. These are good starting questions. My prayer is that you will question & examine & cry out to the Creator of all for truth. I will do the same.I love how Muslims hold to the greatness & glory of God. 'Bishmallah rahman rahim' & surat 6:1(read Psalm 19 you'll enjoy it). Before I begin i just wanna say that even though the Qu-ran calls us the worst of creatures (98:6) I care deeply about you guys!!! 1) You ask where does JC claim to be God. First I love what the Qu-ran says about Jesus (19:19, 3:45 & surah 5) moreover, the qu-ran calls mu-slims to judge by the 'people of the book' (5:47, 5:68). So, read the Gospels & NT, start with John. And, where does JC state he is not God. And, where does he state he is only a prophet? The verses of JC's are all throughout John & Paul's letters. "How did God die when he could just forgive us?" The 2nd part of this question is your MOST important question. "How could god die?" To start, the Qu-ran is eternal right? How can something eternal wear away &,or be destroyed? Yet, printed Qu-rans have ceased to exist. God didn't cease to exist. "Why couldn't God just forgive us?" God is the greatest (allah h'bar)!!! God is therefore, the greatest in justice!!! If he just forgives arbitrarily (for whatever) it means he is unjust & not great!!! How can your good deeds out weigh your bad deeds?. God is perfect & holy. He must make a way to be forgiven. When a muslim does good deeds it is to get to heaven & can be selfish. When you are forgiven, you do good deeds just because they are good & right to do. I do good because it is good.

I'm always hearing the argument by sceptics that 1st and 2nd Peter is too sophisticated and well written to be authored by Peter, a fisherman. Same with John and the Johannine corpus. This video gives alot of insight on how someone with little to no literary expertise could produce such works with the use of Scribes. Great video
@holtscustomcreations
@holtscustomcreations Жыл бұрын
When it comes to first and second Peter and the claim that Peter was uneducated and illiterate, I find it hogwash. Peter spent 3 years as a disciple of a famous rabbi, Jesus of Nazareth. He was a fisherman by trade prior to this because he did not continue in rabbitical school. Most likely completing the first one or two stages of schooling, what we would consider elementary and middle school. However, when Jesus of Nazareth comes to him and his brother, he goes straight into discipleship under a rabbi. This is intense education. He lives with Jesus and goes everywhere Jesus goes. He's educated by Jesus for 3 years. This would be the equivalent of an intense graduate study today. After 3 years under the tutelage of Jesus, Peter continues his education and leadership by becoming one of the foremost experts in the budding sect of Judaism known as Christianity. I would hardly consider Peter uneducated. The letters accredited to Peter are from him late in life. Claiming he was not educated at time is just absurd.

@@tomasrocha6139 Acts chapter 4 takes place early in the ministry of the apostles after the death and resurrection of Jesus. 1st and 2nd Peter were written towards the end of Peter's life approximately fifteen to twenty years later. So are you climbing over a 15 to 20-year. Peter couldn't have gained some type of literary expertise?

Thank you for this video and all of your other work IP! The past few years I've been taught how "some of Paul's letters weren't actually written by Paul," "the Old Testament wasn't first written until the Babylonian Exile," and other things that you address in this and other videos. What I was taught confused me for a while and I was skeptical about those explanations. Your perspective, however, makes a lot more sense and has greatly helped me figure out how to deal with what I initially learned. You explanations seem to take a better look at the historical and cultural context of the Scriptures, thereby giving better explanations of how the Scriptures were written. Keep up the excellent work! Blessings!

Daniel, not sure where you're at now re. this, but I hope you've come to reject the JEDP (or Documentary) Hypothesis - if that's what you're referring to. This has been thoroughly refuted. There's heaps on the net regarding that, but here's one link. carm.org/answering-documentary-hypothesis As to how Moses wrote the Pentateuch, that's an interesting question and i believe there are several possibilities, from what I've read. Either he wrote the whole thing (or mostly) purely from divine inspiration, or he wrote down previous oral traditions, or he compiled previously written documents. My guess is that there was a mix of all three. Considering that Moses was educated in Pharaohs palace, I'd be inclined to think he could read and write. A lot of people have written many things about the Bible and it's contents over the years, I've learned to step back and determine what the author's starting philosophies are. Ie, do they dismiss the miraculous out of hand, do they deny that scripture is divinely inspired, are they trying to harmonise scripture with secular principles. Hope this helps!

Further contributing to the Muratorian fragment's notion is the anti-Marcionite prologue to John (late 2nd-4th century) stating: _"Indeed he_ [Papias] _wrote down the Gospel, while John was dictating carefully."_ While I have my doubts about it being Papias himself, I think it speaks for the fact that John had assistance, and didn't physically put the pen to paper.

One thing to take in account is that though there are many books and many who were used to write these down., there was one guiding force behind the writing, preservation and complication of these into one book. That accounts for a single theme flowing through all the books. God's kingdom for which Jesus taught his disciples to pray for. Without the bible humanity would be lost. Thus, it is conceivable that the Creator wouldn't just put us on earth and move on. He would give us instructions on how to live. Just like an operating manual is given by the manufacturer of something one buys. If we refuse to follow the instructions in the manual and our gadget breaks down, the manufacturer isn't to blame.

Good video. This is something that must be explained over and over again for some atheists (not all) and some believers (not all) who don't understand that the Bible is not the work of a single author. They often complain that there is no unified and consistent single plot and single story in the Bible that would continue from the beginning of the book to the end of the book as in current novels. Nor do they understand why one book is a mythology and another a history, or why one part is taken literally and seriously and the other part is allegory or a metaphor.

This is the problem I have with the premise of the naming of "forged"(by Bart Ehrman). It is supposed to imply that people simply made up the texts, when there is so much more nuance than this.

In his more scholarly version of that book, “Forgery and Counterforgery,” he makes the case that 1. Amanuenses (scribes) didn’t heavily affect what was written, 2. That writing an epistle using a false name was condemned in the New Testament world

Please make a video on why and how Catholics claim the Bible cannon was compiled by the Catholic church, as the Councils were composed by the emperor or pope and bishops, and if there is any truth to it? When was Catholicism started to be called so and differed from 1st century Christianity?
@SamAdamsGhost
@SamAdamsGhost Жыл бұрын
You can't really say when Catholicism became Catholicism as it was a very gradual process. I would say it began when the Empire was split and ramped up when the West fell.

Well Done!!! We need more of this understanding of how the Bible was made. Not from you but many others so our misinformed generation can study the Scriptures in its original context. Most Christians today think it was dictated by God or just dropped down from Heaven in their favorite transition...

Do you think it would be okay to update the bible again for modern day culture to understand? Like removing "from" when God formed man and instead of saying dust of the ground, it would just say mortal man. Like then God assigned a mortal man a new reason to live for instance.

This was certainly an interesting video which shed a new light on the Bible for me! Although, I have a question. So the writings of Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and their contemporaries would have been translated and passed down throught the centuries and compiled in the post-exile period? Or was it oral tradition or something?
@InspiringPhilosophy
@InspiringPhilosophy 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know, probably a mix. If there were documents written by someone like Abraham, they would have been dust by the time of the exile. They were not made to last centuries.

It's important to note that all other political, philosophical, historical, & naturalistic texts from the time period and quite a ways forward in time, would also be written in this manner. If it invalidates the bible it also invalidates anything Ceaser, Socrates, or Plato, ever wrote, in addition to every historical text of the time, and every text to every grace the great library of Alexandria.

Many of these books were written in different contexts from the biblical one, or are of a different literary genre. However, nothing he pointed out invalidates the Bible, as far as I've seen. P.s.: Socrates never wrote anything.

One of the modern worries perhaps was if there was any religious or political elements added to it as commentary were added to the text. In the context of school textbooks, it were desanitizied over the years. Hence, at the end of the day relying on the self and text alone without the Holy Spirit will not turn the lock.

IP, you are a very smart guy. I found your channel recently, and I am very impressed with your ability to reason. I am quite surprised that you still find preference in one of humanities many religions, as I am sure your mind has found strong correlations between separate faiths and customs. In regards to your point on scribes: this makes sense for ancient standards, but also modern standards as well. Do you think prominent figures in today’s age actually type out emails/letters? Political/corporate leaders have professional writers in today’s age as well. It’s not my place to unlock the rationality rabbit hole in anyone’s mind, and I have respect for peaceful Christians that use their faith to make their lives better. But out of curiosity I must ask... what have you determined, through your impressive ability to reason, that separates the Bible as something “divinely inspired” compared to any other religious text. I had my own deconversion years ago, and this is point really tipped the scale for me. When I read the Bible, I see mythology to either 1. Best try to understand the natural world or 2. To garner Political influence in the respective authors time period. Have you read Karen Armstrong’s A History of God? To me, the Bible is no more impressive than any other religious text because of this. (although still fascinating for historical context). I hope you don’t take this as critical or an assault on your faith, just genuine interest from an ex-devout Christian:)

I agree. Not all Bibles are outdated. But I must admit that they do have both strengths and weaknesses. It is not a perfect book. But it is a book that points to a perfect God. This is why it has to be studied. Not just to be read or memorised.

Agreed on much said here, especially on co-laborers as scribes working with Paul. None is so revealing as the book of Hebrews which seems to be written by another author but with Paul's knowledge and depth all over it. There's a good "reductio lecture" available here covering the issue (search YT for *meet john mark author of Hebrews* it's likely the best guess on authorship yet.

for me the most surprisingly inspired books is Genesis, specifically the story of Abraham, Isaac, Eliezer and Rebekah.. having a significant shadow to The Father, Son, Holy Spirit and the redeemed Bride. So Christians today know, though Jesus is not dead, He is also not with us as the Holy Spirit is. And Just as the Holy Spirit is our helper bringing us to Christ, to the perfect day where we are awaken in His image, so did Eliezer, whom's name means "God is Help", bring Rebekah to Isaac, the Son of Abraham, name meaning "father of many", And Isaac who carried the wood meant for the sacrifice, just as Christ did the same being the cross. So not only did God test Abraham, but the entire big picture of the story is a prophetic shadow of the future, some of which is in our past and some of which is in our future. Reading this story brings the believer into it. It's truly remarkable.
