This "ultimate comparison" has one very critical piece missing. You mention the cameras are waterproof, but you never compare the shots underwater. This has been very important to me and I have yet to find anyone who does a decent job at sorting it out. From what I have been able to track down the Gopro max is bad underwater because you can't swap out the fish eye lens, even if it works as "hero mode" the hardware itself causes some problems. I can find videos of the Insta360 R being used underwater but I can't tell if what I am looking at (both in Standard & 360 modes) is really better or worse. Is the fish eye lens distortion / stitching is really as bad as people claim it is? Which 360 mode in which camera is better underwater? What about Hero / Standard modes of the cameras? Do the underwater casings make a difference?

yea that's what I thought I was almost 100% sure he would have said the opposite as white balance was clearly off and the colors were clearly blown out on the Gopro

The coloring on in GoPro was absolutely terrible. Interestingly, this shot seems to be one of the most obvious examples of this issue, and strangely this reviewer seems to like the colors being rather blown out. Not sure that GoPro would be showcasing that shot. It's pretty distorted color-wise. There are certain cases in which that default saturation might be useful if you are looking to avoid postprocessing, but this is certainly not one of those cases.

Yeah but footage can be edited after the fact to correct that but I agree out of the box the insta had a more realistic colour gradient

GoPro Max looks quite unnatural at daylight in this comparison. I think less saturation and contrast leads to a better result for content creators who prefer color-grading their videos manually. A more natural and flatter profile is easier to handle in post... but it depends on your workflow 🙂

Hmmm! Thanks for your work on this. At around 3:11 you compared the snowy images of both. Could it be that the bluish color of the Max is not the true color and the 360 is the true to life of what is being viewed. If so, what makes the Max better? Just asking. Just because a camera software places everything you see in a pleasing color to the eye does not make it a better camera.

The GoPro footage was over saturated, and the white balance was terrible, way too blue in that first lanscape. But it doesn't really matter as long as you can correct it in post, I tend to shoot in flat on the GoPro and then grade it.

Why should anyone choose the oversaturated footage? I owned the Sony as-300 and nearly never shot at colorful/vivid color mode, because it oversaturates everything. The one R actually shows great smooth colors and to my opinion has better dynamic range.

Definitely agree, better dynamic range for insta360 One R! Check out the frame with the monument @3:41 (not to mention that they were shot at different moments in time ;) ) - one can see lots of details in the shadow (building to the left) in the insta360 compared to Max frame while the highlights details (sun image) are comparable.

On the normal GoPro you can just choose a different option for better post editing. I am pretty sure you can do that too on the Max but for some reason in this review he chose not to shoot the videos in comparable settings. When it came to pure quality of a shot at 8:23 the GoPro sure made the better quality shot while the R was blurry with every step.

With the Insta360, you can't simply upload to a computer. Instead, you have to import to an app on your iphone, then export them. I haven't used the GoPro, but if it's even less easy to use than the Insta360, that's pretty sad. I'm still waiting for a 360 camera that allows you to simply export your photos from the camera directly to a photo file.

Here’s my view. You would only want to buy these cameras if you wanted a 360 camera, therefore the other straight shot features aren’t that important (my iPhone 11 can do a better job there). Focusing on the 360 element, I think having better image and sound quality is more important than having an easier to use app - especially given that both apps are very good to begin with - so GoPro wins here. But, then it would come down to price. At the time of writing, the R was retailing for £440 and the MAX for £480. However, GoPro were offering £100 for trading in any old GoPro camera + a 64Gb card thrown in, postage and packaging paid for sending your old camera as well. So if I trade in my Hero session, I get the MAX for £380, extra card and have £60 spare to spend on accessories....done! EDIT: As it happens, I’ve since found out that the £100 off applied to trading in ANY old camera, as long as it originally retailed for at least £100. So I’ve kept my Hero and sent them an old Sony camera I bought back in 2003 for £199. 17 years later It’s obsolete and worthless to me.

Good honest review of two very good cameras. Personally, I prefer GoPro MAX. The simplicity and ease of use really makes it fun and actually inspires me to want to go out and record. The speed and versatility of switching between 360 and traditional "HERO" mode vs carrying a separate camera modual cannot be overstated. I know for a fact that I've gotten great shots I never would have if it would of required the time and hassle of switching out the camera lens. GoPro has been releasing updates to their app on an almost biweekly schedule (sign up to the beta program), so I expect the app to just be getting better and better and time goes on. Finally, have you tried the new v1.40 firmware with the selective exposure balance? It works very well and is easy to use. Very helpful in certain situations. Again, thanks for the quality content and honest review.

Thanks for the useful comparison. I got the Max a few weeks ago and have been really happy with it, is there any reason you would recommend me returning and switching ( have a gopro 6 and 7)? I do like the idea of being able to follow and object in post production, but otherwise the only thing the max leaves me wanting is additional resolution and higher FPS (when exporting from 360 footage to 1080)

Have you updated your One R’s firmware to the latest? I just want to warn you that if you do get the new firmware, it has eliminated the Quick Capture feature. After contacting tech support from Insta360 they confirmed that this feature is no longer available and they have no explanation why they got rid of it. Also they do not plan to add it back.

Thank you for your review. Nobody seems to be addressing the 360 stitching. The seam can be overly obvious in some cases making those sections of the video or stills unusable. I'm about to return a 360 Max just for that reason. How do you think the Insta360 R or the Insta One X2 360 do in the stitching department? Maybe my expectations are too high?

Insta 360 one R is really bad for watersports. Heating is an issue, especially when using a case as recommended for watersports. The case is made of plastic which causes a lot of reflections and gets foggy. I tried the one R without a case with a stand-up padel board and water got inside just falling in the water, less than a meter deep. I saw a video of Kai Lenny caught by a really huge wave in Nazare; he was using the GoPro max with a selfie stick and there was no damage to the camera.

Man i just really cannot decide between these two - i kinda feel like the gopro might be a bit better overall BUT the fact they are lacking in android/windows software right now is a real kick in the teeth for us android/windows users.. they shouldnt do that, its wrong! Seeing a lot of complaints on the insta360 group about the R freezing aswell and also the 360 mod lenses steaming up in the middle causing white dots on the footage. Is the gopro software really that much faster than the insta software? as i think that might be a deal breaker as i HATE waiting for footage to render, iv got a decent laptop to process it but i could always use my mobile phone if the desktop software is no use. Really cant decide here!

What is that blue coming from in the gopro??

I am slightly confused as to why the 360 One R footage is so blurry here, not only have I been lucky to see a friend's 360 One R and its output fist hand, but almost every other review has sharp footage from it, specially in low light. So really curious about it, I have not found another review comparing these two where the 'difference' is so marked...😏 (and why not give us a 4k version of this review?)

I've seen footage where it's blurry and some where it's not. Will depend on the envirnment and amount of artificial light. It does better when there is lots of this.

Not sure I agree with you regarding the dynamic range. Watching your footage is seems pretty clear to me that the 360 One R did a much better job than the GoPro, plus that GoPro footage was over-saturated beyond belief. I don't understand why it was so blue - it was like the colour temperature was set to 4000K. Yep - just watched the rest of your footage - I think you're confusing over-saturation with colour capabilities - the fact that GoPro turn the saturation up to 11 is in no way, shape or form a good thing. Video editors will find they have way more to work with on that nice clean 360 One R footage I think.

I dont own any of 360 cameras. By watching this comparison I think gopro has NOTICEABLY better video quality although every reviewer is saying opposite. I really want to buy insta360 but it looks like reviewers are paid or not honest thats why im gonna wait for gopro to improve the workflow, i would really want to edit videos on phone without need of downloading it. Question for the author of the video: when you said that cameras stabilisation works "almost" the same at 10:00 you were thinking that viewers listen you as podcast and dont watch the video to see differences by themselves? There is CLEAR difference in favor of the gopro. Like day and night and considering similar price tag how you can say that stabilisation is "almost" same? Its absolutely not.

Just recently back from snowboarding with my Max. Absolutely amazing 360 camera. I can't compare with the One R as i do not own it but i can give you one piece of advice that should sway anyone in the direction of the Gopro. "GOPRO PLUS". for £5 a month you can chuck this around worry free as you'll receive a new camera no questions asked if you smash it. if you've ever tried insta customer service and repair process you'll know the pain, repair costs and wait time to receive it back and in some cases not fully repaired.

I have a Pixel 3XL. The Insta360 One R app is practically unusable on it. It crashes constantly, is a slow as a wet week, and many of the functions of the iPhone version are missing from the Android version. When I called support about this , they told me to use my friend's iPhone to edit my videos. I wouldn't recommend any Android user consider the Insta360 One X or One R until Insta360 fix their Android apps (or unless you want to only use a PC/Desktop or laptop to edit)

Well, I've finally bought the insta 360 R, played with it, and can say that its mobile software is not as great as I thought (maybe gopro has the same disadvantages, I don't know). Firstly, you cannot adjust the FOV angle precisely - you only choose from several options (see no reason for that - they do smooth transitions). Secondly, you must first choose the panning angle, and only then the FOV angle, and cannot edit what you have chosen earlier (only reset the point), which is way way weird. There was an option of zooming while playback, but they removed even that several days ago.

Strange, Reframe and FOV can be adjusted via premier pro? i ve seen for Max it can do via mobile app, have you tried both the desktop app and mobile app, I was thinking into this or MAX so your comment makes me think and do more research :) how was the video quality of 360 mod also can we manually adjust the shutter speed for 360 mod?

@@webvamsi555 I don't own premiere, but insta 360 studio on PC allows reframing and adjusting FOV (which is great), - the only thing it lacks is auto tracking a subject :) which should be one of the main advantages, I think. I can neither find it in user manual, nor in studio for PC, however the mobile app has it.

My concern is editing the video. I hate editing on the cell phone, it is a joke that everything is an app. It also is a joke that you needed a top of the line program that cost $100s of dollars to edit it on your PC.

relaity was in between the two. I guess the One X as the sky is never really that blue.

Most of your One R shots are very soft comparing to the GoPro Max. I've ordered the One R, but if it will be performing as bad then I'll be selling it for sure...
