Unlike the other reviews I have seen, this one makes me want to buy the camera! The shots in the bandstand really showed the difference between this and the X2 - under test conditions. I still have some reservations about quality once the cameras are on the move - it's then much less of a difference it seems. When it comes to audio, it's a pity the Insta360 have not followed DJI's lead, whose Action 2 camera will accept USB audio straight into its USB port, so you don't need an adapter. But I guess that's a nitpick. At the end of the day (in low light!) reasonably affordable 360 cameras can't compete with the basic image quality of normal cameras, because those seemingly impressive 6K pixels are spread over the whole globe that the camera captures. So while it's a great 360 camera for those needing to use a 360 camera, it's not a great camera for those not needing 360 degrees of capture. Which is simply stating the rule that every camera is a tool for a particular job - there's no "best" without considering the task in hand. Excellent work.

Hi Peter, there is hope for audio without the adaptor. Interestingly you can use the Bluetooth to connect EarPods for external audio, which is not great but it shows the potential. There is a product on the market called the Instamic, which is a third party product that uses the Bluetooth for audio, I would love to test it but it is out of stock everywhere. I would like to use the audio without the adaptor as it also compromises the water-proof nature of the One X2 once you open the side doors.

This looks like a significant upgrade from our original One X. A problem with the One X we found was overheating on long shots (15-18 min)…the battery swelled to the point it took plyers to pry out of the camera. Second concern - battery life?

This camera in default settings is terribly bad at recording small objects in the shadows and vegetation around you if you move. This can be seen in your video. But there are settings that fix it, it's a pity that you didn't tell about it.

Fantastic review and totally agree, it's the right tool when it's the right tool but the other 360 cameras that insta make are more than enough for most people. Thank you for the video. I have to say that the lack of HDR video (as available on just about all recent Insta360's cheaper cameras) and the abhorrent way this camera absolutely destroys and obliterates all and any highlights, is absolutely unwatchable, period. I do not understand how this camera's IQ and dynamic range are so horrendous and seemingly no one and no reviewer seems to care.. I just can't comprehend.

the selfie stick that comes with the camera is defective. The glue that bonds the handle to the telescoping stick failed and the camera fell out. It scratched the lens. The Insta service won't replace the stick or cover damage/loss. After weeks of going over the issue they are not sending a replacement.

FYI the camera doesn't struggle per say. When you're close to it on the stitch line is doing a perfect job of switching two images together as it normally does. It's just the stitch line becomes more apparent the closer you get. The camera doesn't know the difference between a face and scenery on the stitch line.

I am producing 360 content for several years owning Insta360, One X, One R and GoPro Fusion and this is the biggest upgrade I have seen in this area. Kind of. You can choose what part of the view to export as a 'normal' video. So yes, you can use them as action or vlog cameras, but with the chance of switching the view from facing forward to facing you as desired.

Hi Don, I just checked and at the moment the firmware is not the same at the One X2 where you can change the field of view from 360 to 180 and essentially switch lenses. At the moment the software is only allowing us to record in 360 with both lenses. I provided a clip at the end of the review when I was summarising where I recomposed from a 360 image so that it looked like a typical vlog camera distance and I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of it. You can ‘zoom in’ in the 360 studio app so that the image does not appear so distorted and then you get a great looking image.

the 1 inch is absolutely over-sharpened out of the box. luckily you can lower the sharpening setting in camera. i have seen a few videos of the 1 inch with lowered sharpening settings and it looks great and better IMO than the over cooked OOC setting. already have this camera on order.

The still images exported are just over 6000 pixels wide (6K) which is great if you intend on outputting in 360. This camera has two one inch sensors, therefore the quality of each 180 degrees (approx) will be similar to an image from a one inch camera with a wide angle lens. So it depends upon what the quality requirements are for 3d rendering you are referring to are….

nice review, however as a 360 motovlogger myself, I been using one x2 for long time, been hopeing insta360 will annouce one x2's next generation product, but after watching lots of review videos , I have to say insta360 one rs 1 inch is NOT for motovloging, insta360 even officially mentioned it on their purchasing page, that this camera is not for action or high speed, and it can not be used with fully extended selfie stick ( due to its weight I guess). Anyway this 1 inch is really a new era for 360 video making, for me I guess I will keep on waiting for " One X3"

I think it may be fair to also be up front that a “1-inch” sensor isn’t really 1-inch at all-it’s actually 0.63” (!) diagonally. kzbin.info/www/bejne/joW3nn1uYpuUmrs It turns out that’s so-called “1-inch” sensors are so named that because that’s the type of sensor that would be used with a 1-inch CRT tube. (Gordon, I don’t at all blame you for being hornswoggled by Insta360’s marketing team, but might it be worth updating the video’s title to perhaps steer away from inadvertently misleading folks about that?)

You're absolutely right, and as you know, this applies to all the xx-type sensors, whether it's 1/2.3in-type, 1/2in-type or 1in-type - they are all referring to the diameter of a theoretical vacuum tube that would be needed to house them in the 1950s! Crazy stuff, right? I have talked about actual sensor sizes in reviews of previous cameras with 1in-type sensors like the Sony RX100 and Canon G7 series. But here I felt it over-complicated the video, so stuck with what I believe is the most important part which is the relative surface area versus other models. So a 1in-type has roughly four times the area of a 1/2.3in type.

Question for you: How hot does the 1 inch camera get? Can I go for 20-40 minutes without it overheating and shutting down? I asked Ben to do some tests for you. The camera recorded 30 minutes, paused for 5 seconds then started again before running out of battery at 1hr. The camera became very warm but didn't overheat.

@@cameralabs the idea was to possibly race/drift the car. As in UK it gets dark very early during winter, it would look really bad on the x2. That's why I was asking about the 1 inch version. Also, this weekend I'd like to attach some camera to my helmet, so I can record my indoor kart race in 360. Being indoor it wouldn't be the brightest place to start with... So any thoughts on this? @@mihaiserbanescu8676 that sounds really cool, but you'd obviously have to mount it very solidly. People do mount cameras to stunt cars so it can be done, but refer to how they do it. As for light, yes, the 1in model is going to best in low light for this sort of thing, but it's hard to say if it will be good enough for what you want until you try it. The next step up will be much pricier.

Hi, for clarity the One inch edition does not shoot HDR video, only HDR stills. The One RS does shoot HDR video however. I haven’t tested the HDR photos extensively on the one inch edition, however I have a few examples, one from the poppy field and it resulted in a very HDR looking image with lifted shadows and a flat looking sky. Not to my taste but may look better with a little editing. In terms of dynamic range, the videos on the bandstand were literally shot minutes apart and the exposure values set the same. It is very difficult to judge dynamic range on a 360 image, but the reference images of the bandstand are good test - so take a look at the highlight in the sky and although not significant - it looks like the one inch edition holds a little more information around the sun that the One X2. But in Brighton conditions the One X2 does a great job of handling the dynamic range, it is just lacking the detail of the one inch edition.

Dang. Great review, but I was hanging out for some HDR tests. I'm particularly interested in using this camera for quick n' dirty HDRI maps for lighting in 3D environments. I read the 1-inch can yield 4 EV stops... but does it?
