TLDR: 5.7K: sensors downscale the image, less work for the processor which enables 60fps 5.7k+: processor downscales the image. Uses more computation and battery, limited to 30fps. Can apply higher quality noise reduction and scaling. In order to support 60fps, the 5.7k mode configures the sensors themselves to downscale the image. That way, it takes less ressources for the processor to process the color, apply noise reduction and encode the result to h265, and it can do so at 60fps. The sensors themselves doing downscaling to a lower resolution is called "pixel binning" In 5.7k+ mode, the sensors are configured like in 8k mode. Image processing is the same as the 8k mode, but the result is scaled down before being encoded into a h265 video. That's why the same framerate limit as 8k apply. Its essentially the same until the last processing step.

I'm also investigating on the 5.7K+ mode. Facts: 1. The camera says "use 5.7K for better quality in low light condition". 2. In picture mode, 72MP has a max ISO of 1600 and 18MP has the max ISO of 6400. In both 5.7K and 5.7K+, the max ISO is 6400. 3. When filming in pure dark environment, 4K and 5.7K shows extremely low noise, while 5.7K+ and 8K shows normal noise. Speculation *Due to its tiny body, 8K may not be oversampled from 11.4K, it may be line skipping. 1. If it's pixel binning, then it's using the image processing pipeline same as 8K, doing less denoise on device, leaving it to the computer/phone to give better result. 2. If it's not pixel binning, the downscale method may be line skipping, oversampling or both, then it extends ISO(digital manipulation instead of sensor, SNR will not change, lower quality than native ISO) from 1600 to 6400. I'll try to figure it out and come back with a result if I can.

@@supercurioTube in picture mode, dng is not de-bayered, pixel binned 5888 × 2944, full res 11904 × 5952. I already confirmed that 5.7K+ is downscaled from full res, but the downscale method is still not clear, I'll try to figure out. Will send link to the post when I finish.

@@supercurioTube Do you have any idea what sensor this is? From what I looked up, only IMG586 and OV48B are 1/2" and supports 4-cell pixel binning, having a resolution close to X4. X4 has 2 1/2" sensors, so 2994 is the short edge of the sensor.

The 5.7k regular uses a 4-1 pixel binning - effectively only using 1 out of every 4 pixels of the sensor. (Not to be confused with debayering, the debayering pattern would still be used but the 3 RGB color samples would be provided from a 16 pixel grid, while the luminance samples would come from a 4 pixel grid )This usually leads to moire patterns in video as interference patterns and other artifacts will be made worse by sub sampling. The 5.7k+ and 8k uses the entire 11k sensor image then downsamples before recording. Pixel binning is far easier on a processor as you are removing 75% of the information before processing, and likely the high ISO noise removal algorithm is too processor intensive to handle 8k and 5.7k+ as it has to do a further downsampling step compared to the 5.7k. The physical low light ISO capabilities would not change at 5.7k, rather the available processing power of in camera noise removal. I would suspect you can get better noise removal in post using the 8k or 5.7k+ mode than what can be done in camera with neat video or others but it may not look very pretty coming out of the camera.

What the Ista360 staff say in one forum: 5.7K+ and 5.7K use the same encoding parameters, but they differ in how the original sensor samples the image pixels. 5.7K+ utilizes full pixel sampling for encoding, while 5.7K employs a 4-in-1 pixel sampling technique. As a result, 5.7K+ delivers better image quality than standard 5.7K.

Got insta360 tech suport answer: In order to provide more resolution options, in addition to 8k, we have also added 5.7K+; the image quality of 5.7k+ will be slightly lower than 8k, but higher than 5.7k. 1. Comparison between 5.7k+ and 8k: 8k has a higher resolution and clearer image quality than 5.7k+. However, the 5.7K+ material file is smaller and has better compatibility with devices. 2. Comparison between 5.7k+ and 5.7k: Although the encoding resolution parameters are the same, the number of pixels sampled by the original image sensor at the two levels is different. 5.7K+ uses full-pixel sampling encoding, and 5.7K uses 4-in-1 pixel sampling. Encoding, so the final image quality of 5.7k+ will be better than 5.7k.

Thats nice. What I want is a native file support plugin for Davinci so I don’t have to use insta360 studio to laboriously reframe or export at turtle speeds and at the expense of additional used up hard drive space.

Are you sure? You would have had to activate and update the firmware if not already on the latest. Maybe you missed the update part when activating.

I think it’s when you use the lens cover to place on the 360 lens , then you could use that option so that it can literally eliminate the line from between the 360 camera lens.

Will be interested to test the overheating run times compared to 8k vs 5.7k+ v 5.7k. Considering X4 to record full football matches but 8k falls short of a full match but the longer X4 battery life at least better in 5.7k whereas the X3 was less than a full match.

@@EatSleep360 That would be great as no one has. The headline is 8K but overheating is understandbly an achilles for long periods of use. 5.7k+ meant to ease processing power but getting compromised 8K video quality for longer periods differentiates X4 vs X3 at 5.7k.

@@Mingzaimlee I'm not sure that 5.7K does ease processing - I get the impression that it reduces file size by using extra CPU on the original 8K. I guess a careful battery life / overheating test would settle the matter.

For TikTok, what quality do you recommend? Maybe 5.7K+? I think 8K is way too much and will also drain the battery faster. I can carry 2-3 extra batteries with me, yeah... but I'm not sure if my 256GB memory stick would be enough for 8K quality recordings or if I would need additional memory sticks.

5.7k+ is a good compromise - you don’t need 8k for tik tok unless you want to zoom in a lot

I'm sure during internal testing they can tweak algorithms for different resolutions. Internally they probably have many different variations of 5.7 k resolution and they probably use an optimized algorithm for what ends up in the camera's final firmware. It's possible 5.7 k plus was just too big of a file size and didn't perform well enough in low light to be the exclusive 5.7 k resolution but the same time they wanted to offer people another option that didn't require them to have to bump all the way to 8k. I would love for insta360 to release various different firmwares with different algorithms for us to experiment with. Having a bunch of different experimental firmware builds to try out that have different video quality depending on resolution and low light and other wacky features would be exciting.

If your camera can shoot 8k but is recording in 4K, there are essentially two ways to scale the image down: oversampling and line skipping. Oversampling (aka pixel binning) takes in account multiple pixels and averages them out, giving the impression of a sharper image, but at the expense of more processing power. Line skipping does what the name suggests, it just ignores some of the pixels (thus not using the full capability of the sensor), at the expense of quality but with lower processing power. If your camera line skips you could see some artifacts when framing diagonal straight lines, which can appear blocky

they have 25 fps option to shoot., and instastudio now doesnt let u make a 25fps sequence or export 25 fps. this is ridiculus..i cant avoid drop framing and mix with other cameras footage now? jeeez

I am coming to the conclusion as far as the X4 is concerned that it's best to think of picture quality as a whole and don't get too worried about the numbers. Comparisons with the X3 have, in my view, shown that its 5.7k vs the X4 8k can sometimes compete and sometimes not, depending on the picture quality and content as a whole. I suspect therefore that 5.7K+ should be treated the same way. Do you need to use it? Does its theoretical inferiority to the 8K option actually trouble you when shooting the stuff you normally use, and when viewing the stuff the way you normally view it? Then act accordingly.

I prefer 5.7 60fps as it will be smoother and you can slow it down if you want to. The disadvantage is it will use more memory. If memory space is a priority then shoot 5.7 30fps

5.7k is fine for instagram but if you want to zoom in a lot then 8k will be sharper. IG compresses everything so there is an argument to use the highest res possible to overcome the compression.

I'm using a Samsung s23 ultra phone and every setting doesn't seem to allow me to download my files to my phone they just say download failed 13000. I never had this issue on my x3. Any indication what it could be.

@@EatSleep360 I was always puzzled as to why standard 5.7K would be better in low light, due to the pixel pitch of the sensor being the same no matter what mode is being used. I would expect, given that 5.7K+ is using more of the power of the AI chip, that low light should work out. In the update Insta360 did mention that the new firmware was making more use of the AI chip for noise reduction purposes. Annoyingly the firmware update has come out just when I'm finalising my initial review of the device!

@EatSleep360 with my old One RS I could recorde 512gb for 13 hours. I recorded 1,3Tb in 5 weeks cycling, that why my highest priority between quality is filesize. I don't want to double my sd cards.

I see people say who needs 8k. like as if the 360 is just a normal action camera. but am I wrong in saying that it is 8k in 360 view. but as soon as you edit and pick your 180 direction of view. it is no longer 8k. it is more like 4k because you are using half of the 360 file. so if you are shooting 4k 360. it turns into something like 2k 180 when edited. am I right ? I just bought the X4 a couple of days ago. I wasn't sure if I made the right choice or not because I was also considering the Ace Pro and Pocket 3. but after playing a little with the X4 I am very happy I bought it. I love picking the view when editing. but I need to get way better at editing. and I still haven't tried it while riding my motorcycle. I need to figure out how I'm going to mount it first. my bike has clip on bars. and I still might want to get an Ace pro for a second option. or two camera option. the last action camera I bought many years ago was the Go Pro Hero 3. So this X4 is a big step up in new tech. one thing I was really surprised about was when I picked up the Ace Pro. its like twice as big and heavy as my Hero 3. but so is my X4.

Yes that’s correct - the 8k is shared around the whole 360 image so when you reframe it’s more like 2.7k but you can export to 4k it just gets upconverted using the software. For a motorbike I’d go for a handlebar mount if possible. I don’t like the helmet mounts as I never feel safe relying on a sticky mount. Download my free x4 ebook in the pinned comment above.

Indeed. It depends what you are using for viewing and also the content of the picture. One reviewer (Roo) showed test card images which made the X4 look waaaay better than the X3. But real life footage tends to be less different in respect of resolution, although overall X4 images have better image quality as a whole.
