I’ve felt this way about KZbin for a while. I have so many ideas that I’d like to try but when I upload anything different from my regular content, the videos just get buried by the algorithm which is discouraging. I think KZbin even says something like “your subscribers are choosing this video less often resulting in it appearing less in people’s recommendations.” It makes me nervous to give other types of content a chance. By playing it safe and sticking with the same content week after week, I feel like it’s holding me back from reaching an even bigger audience. Im just working to keep the algorithm satisfied.

I've been subscribed for about 3 years now for you and even with your inclusion of skateboarding, I think that showing yourself as a human with multiple interests and talents makes you even more valued by your true fans. I think that if you made other non "regular" videos, sure maybe not everyone would watch them as much as BMW videos, but it allows your audience to see more of YOU. That is something I think that a lot of your true, long term fans would appreciate. If you had the time to post the "regular vids" at the same cycle as you have been, but then add some more unique ones in between, I think it would be worth it. I hope this helps encourage you! In the end though.. I am a subscriber that actually enjoyed your garage building videos and recommendation for space heaters so I my opinion may not be generalizable haha

This happened to a big youtuber I follow. Pickuplimes. I love her channel. She usually post recipes, and recently posted a video of how to improve food photography- and it got buried. She did a community post to ask everyone to watch it, and a lot of people watched just to support but the feedback was a lot of people weren’t interested in the “how to” behind food photography and just wanted recipes. I felt bad for her, and watched her video just to support another creator. It’s so hard to express yourself creatively and not get penalized for it as a creator.

Corporations/sponsors are now the true creators of KZbin content and not the actual person uploading the content. Some of our favorite creators are now more focused on trying to sell us gear, than trying to teach us the art. I believe a ton of artists have actually lost their passion but they have to keep pumping out the same robotic content to keep the money coming in to pay the bills. Nevertheless, if the viewers keep clicking, then don't try to fix what's not broken, I guess.

The algorithm favors what people like. Most people like trendy trash (Turn on the radio and see what they feed you). If you put incredible tasting home made tortilla chips in a gas station, the Doritos will outsell them every day of the week. When it comes to taste in art, we cannot expect the greater public to care.

Build your account to a place, where people will like what ever you will post. Instagram is a tool, it's not a place to judge your creativity through likes. Your audience is the key. In stead of taking specifically vertical shot for instagram, try to find which shot does the justice to a vertical shot. I am a serious hobby photographer and every single photos that I took takes planning. If there is no vertical shot to post, I simply don't post. Quality is more important to me than quantity 👍

Oh and yeah I totally agree with your point. A few years ago I was shooting an incredible mountain scene and the photographer I was there with was really into growing on back then. I was really happy with the shots I got from there but they were all in horizontal mode and he wasn't happy because he couldn't find a composition that worked vertical and I told him to shoot horizontal and he said he do that because he can't post that on , how weird is that

People and and current photographers spend more time in post edition than actually clicking, composing, thinking about the lights, the colors... and then there is the trends... because it's new, the algorithm tends to put those above all others! Too many creators are hinging their “success” on “just a few more followers.” You’re the one keeping yourself back by that mindset and missing the point of the game. Honestly, I was so focused on growing my account just for the sake of during first year experimenting with photography. Now that I’m three years in, and over the course of late 2019-now I just post whatever I want. Hashtags haven’t made the biggest difference so sometimes I forget to add those. I only comment when someone posts something actually inspiring to me rather than commenting to boost my own engagement. And what I’ve now realized is, Instagram and social media in general is going to evolve, possibly die away, and grow into other things. So, here’s a fun idea: everyone collectively should be more focused on bettering their craft rather than spending hours trying to fight algorithms and get numbers. Numbers mean nothing in hindsight, whereas creativity and passion will outlive it all. Thanks for making this video, Chris. Really enjoying the honest mindsets you’ve been pushing in your message and brand lately. I feel like that goes a long way instead of the same gear talk seen on 90% of other related channels.

I'm not a photographer, but a videographer. But more importantly I'm a rap artist. You're describing something universally applicable to other creative forms. I feel like I have to play the game to some extent in order for people to see and appreciate what I work so hard to make... Because if I don't play the social media game, there appears to be no other viable attention economy to replace it. I feel like a storyteller at the firepit with no one else at the fire, at times. But you said something flippantly, it just happened to be true. Therapy for creative people is important and often necessary. We grind for years, and a lot of us give up and can't make it to the end of our life with pride, gratitude, and joy in our craft. Though I'm hustling on social media now, I've learned to view it as part of my job, and its impact on me is not a reflection of my own artistic value... Thank you for the thoughtful video!
@RustyBrown_3 жыл бұрын
Facts, Chris. Facts. I've slowly pulled away from IG. Doing so only reinforces why I began in photography in the first place - the art and fun of it. I also feel that IG really isn't a platform for photography. When people ask me where they can see my work, I send them to my website or to my Flickr page (neither of which is driven by an algorithm). IG will be IG, and in that sense, good for those who use it in a way that IG rewards. For photographers though - it shouldn't be our go-to platform (my opinion). The minute we start shooting for the likes is the beginning of where we lose our creativity. Great video, man - thank you.
@DiegoTeliz3 жыл бұрын
100% agree with your thoughts. We limit ourselves way too much on what we create. On top of the points you mentioned, some photographers also do other things for the sake of Instagram, for example I used to take into consideration the 3 columns grid on Instagram and posted content according to that, and of top of it I used to have a color as "theme" during certain amounts of posts. Of course, the feed looks nice but this restricts the type of photos I take and I ended up not posting many shots that I love... just because it didn't fit with those "rules" or trends. So now I basically decided to don't care about those things anymore and just post photos that I really like, regardless of what the algorithm likes! Love your videos, keep it up!

I mean most people on instagram doesn't get more than a second on a post. They see something that pleases their eyes and never think about any thought process whatsoever. It's saddening.

Thsoe intro & outro are seriously one of the best if not the best I have ever seen on YT!

As a long time IG hater, I used get triggered when someone would say "Crop for Instagram". I've recently decided to cave in and join the masses and at first stubbornly stuck to my 3x2 horizontal photos, but lately have started to occasionally crop with IG in mind. Sickening! Thanks for the reminder, Chris. Great video!

I just started photography and Instagram literally this January when I bought my first cam. I'm really loving my daily afternoon walk and taking street photography of my city. But just a few days of posting daily in Instagram really started to have an impact on me now. I started to shoot for likes instead of developing my own creative style as a starting photographer. This vid really is a wake up slap for me 👋 Really glad I ran into this!

I didn't really realize how much this has affected my photography - you're right on the money about preinstagram photos. It was much more enjoyable to take pictures of everything... i'll try to think about that next time I'm on a trip

man. chris, i didn't really dig your content for a long time, and i dipped back in after a long hiatus. i gotta say -- i think you're doing such a great job and it's clear that you've progressed naturally toward making content for YOU and YOUR AUDIENCE. just my 0.02 BTC. keep it up man, i love to see it.

Chris, man. Your videos are just the beeeest. Thank you for saying it like it is. You and Lucas got it figured out. I abandoned Instagram for a couple months. When I feel like cracking it open again, I’ll be posting whatever the hell I want. I literally cannot look at a photo of a mountain again. Bring back insta-food pics!

It’s sad that we are mostly all guilty of doing these things, but it’s extremely eye opening how Instagram has limited our originality. Thank you for sharing this video! I couldn’t agree more with your insight.

The best thing I did with my photography was want to move into commercial photography, so that opens me up to photograph everything, headshots, landscapes, products. Landscapes and gear shots perform the best, headshots the worst but it doesn't stop me posting as its my portfolio and I get hired from companies. Their algorithm is clearly more interested in pointless influencers lately so whatever. Great video dude, the opening was class

Solid like this video.... IG has absolutely impacted my creativity, yes nowadays I only shoot vertically, yes I post less and shoot less of the stuff that doesn't perform well on my profile, and yes, I've been trying to fill my ego with likes and engagement Thank you Chris, I definitely needed to hear all of this
