How long after laying and securing Hardiebacker can you then lay tile? I’d imagine there’s a cure time for the thinset under the hardiebacker before we start walking/kneeling to lay tile…

Depends on the mortar that is used. Normal curing times are between 12 and 24 hours.

You’re welcome. You can generally use the same thinset that you will be using to set your tile with. We used VersaBond LFT from the Home Depot, which is what we used for our tile. LFT stands for Large Format Tile (ours was 24” x 24”). 1. Is it absolutely necessary to have a 3/4 inch subfloor? I believe mine is1/2 inch. If I go to thicker Hardie Backer, it will screw up the threshold to the bedroom and all of the door moldings would need to be cut. (I am using 13x13 inch tiles. 2. What thinset mortar are you using? There are so many different brands and types out there. THANKS! (AND THANKS for this video!)

Your welcome! 1/2” subfloor would be pretty rare. Most are at least 5/8”. Check out this article (link below) on installing Hardie Backer Board. 5/8” is the minimum for installation. Then it also matters how far your floor joists are spaced apart. I saw somewhere that anything over 12x12 tile requires a 3/4” subfloor. I would recommend that you check with your local building codes before getting started. Link below also for the Large Format Tile (LFT) thinset that we used. Which one side of the board goes up ? That is main question!!!!!

The manufacturer says that either side is acceptable for facing up, however they recommend that the smooth side with the fastener pattern every eight inches on center be facing up. That makes it easy to install the fasteners.

No more cement/HB board. Ditra all the way. So much faster and easier

Appears to be easier, especially for someone who is doing a lot of tiling. But the concern for me was the rigidity. HB board meets required deflection criteria and using cement board previously has given adequate support and have never had a problem with tile or grout movement. That along with costing less made it the right choice for us when doing a very occasional tiling job. Seems to me that one would have to be using a lot more thinset to basically be replacing the thickness of the cement board which would be adding to the cost of the more expensive membrane to begin with.
